Chapter 6: The Truth Buried In The Last Hour

The message stayed on my phone screen.

*Ask Olivia what she did the night Claire died.*

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

My mind refused to accept another possibility.

Not Olivia.

Not her.

She was Claire’s doctor.

Her friend.

The person Claire trusted enough to leave a letter with.

But that was the problem.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had told me they were protecting me.

And somehow, every person I trusted seemed to know more than I did.

“Daniel?””

Olivia’s voice pulled me back.

She was still standing beside the table, staring at the SUV outside.

“Who sent that?”” she asked.

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I turned the phone around.

Her eyes dropped to the screen.

And for the first time since I met her, Olivia looked afraid.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

“You know who sent it.””

Her lips parted.

“Daniel…”

“Who?””

She looked toward the window.

The person outside was getting closer.

“Not here.””

I stood up.

“No.””

My voice surprised both of us.

“No more secrets.””

Olivia looked at me.

“I understand why you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

I laughed bitterly.

“My wife died. My daughter was terrified in her own home. Someone installed cameras everywhere.

Someone has been watching us. And every person I trusted kept pieces of the truth from me.””

My voice lowered.

“I’m done being the last person to know what’s happening in my own life.””

Olivia looked down.

Then she whispered:

“I was with Claire the night she died.””

The room went silent.

Even the sound of traffic outside seemed to disappear.

“What?””

“I didn’t tell you because Claire asked me not to.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because she knew Vanessa was watching her.””

I shook my head.

“No. That’s not enough.””

I stepped closer.

“Start from the beginning.””

Olivia took a shaky breath.

“Claire called me that night.””

“What time?””

“8:17 p.m.””

I remembered that night.

Every detail.

I remembered Emma sleeping upstairs.

I remembered sitting beside Claire’s hospital papers.

I remembered receiving the call that she had collapsed.

“She sounded scared,” Olivia continued.

“What did she say?””

“She said, ‘I was right.’”

My stomach tightened.

“About Vanessa?””

Olivia nodded.

“She told me she had proof.””

“What proof?””

“She didn’t say.””

“Why?””

“Because she said someone was listening.””

I looked around the empty coffee shop.

“Someone?””

Olivia nodded.

“Daniel, Claire believed the cameras weren’t just recording. She believed someone was accessing them.””

My skin went cold.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not true.””

She looked at me.

“You know something.””

“I know Claire was terrified.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the phone.

“And someone knows you were there.””

Olivia looked away.

That was when I knew.

She wasn’t telling me everything.

“Tell me.””

She closed her eyes.

“I went to your house that night.””

My heart dropped.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Claire made me promise.””

I felt anger rising.

“My wife died and you kept this from me?””

“She was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Olivia didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small key.

“I took something from Claire’s house that night.””

I stared at it.

“What?””

“A key.””

“To what?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer made no sense.

“You took a key and didn’t know what it opened?””

“I was supposed to find out later.””

“Later?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Claire said if she didn’t make it, I needed to wait until you were ready.””

I shook my head.

“This is insane.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You all keep saying that. You all keep acting like I’m fragile.””

I pointed toward the door.

“My wife trusted me enough to marry me. My daughter trusts me enough to tell me she’s scared. But everyone else decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””

Olivia’s expression softened.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I looked at the key.

“Where does it go?””

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your house.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

The front door opened.

Both of us turned.

A man stepped inside.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

His face hidden for a moment.

Then he looked up.

My blood froze.

Because I knew him.

“Michael?””

My brother stopped.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then he sighed.

“Daniel.””

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“You followed me?””

Michael looked at Olivia.

Then back at me.

“I needed to talk to you.””

“You knew.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“You knew about Claire.””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

I stepped backward.

“God.””

Michael ran a hand over his face.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

“You were there.””

Michael froze.

“What?””

“The photo.””

His expression changed.

“What photo?””

“The one from the night Claire died.””

Olivia looked between us.

“Daniel…”

I ignored her.

“Who was with Vanessa?””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

And that was when I saw it.

Recognition.

He knew.

“You know.””

He looked down.

“Daniel.””

“You know who was there.””

The silence lasted too long.

Then Michael said:

“It wasn’t Vanessa.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who?””

He looked at Olivia.

Then at me.

“I tried to stop it.””

“Stop what?””

He stepped closer.

“Claire found out something about Vanessa.””

“What?””

“She found out Vanessa wasn’t just obsessed with your family.””

I waited.

Michael swallowed.

“She was obsessed with Claire.””

The words landed like a punch.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“We need to leave.””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I stood my ground.

“I want the truth.””

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“Vanessa didn’t become interested in you after Claire died.””

I stared at him.

“She was interested in you before.””

A memory surfaced.

A dinner.

Years ago.

Vanessa laughing with Claire.

Vanessa asking questions about me.

I had always thought it was friendship.

Michael continued.

“She wanted Claire’s life.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa believed Claire stole everything from her.””

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“Her career.””

“Her relationship.””

“Her future.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Michael’s eyes were filled with regret.

“That’s exactly what Claire was afraid of.””

The phone in my pocket buzzed.

All three of us looked down.

Another message.

Unknown number.

This time, there was a video attached.

A short one.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Claire’s bedroom.

The date was the night she died.

My heart stopped.

Claire was standing near the bed.

Alive.

Terrified.

Then Vanessa entered.

But she wasn’t alone.

A second person followed.

The camera angle shifted.

I couldn’t see the face.

Not yet.

Then Claire said:

“Daniel will know the truth.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“No, he won’t.””

The other person spoke.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that made my entire body go cold.

Because it belonged to someone who had spent the last eighteen months telling me they loved me.

The video ended.

I looked up slowly.

At Michael.

At Olivia.

Then at my phone.

Because the voice on the recording wasn’t Michael.

It wasn’t Olivia.

It was Vanessa.

But she wasn’t talking to Claire.

She was talking to the person standing behind the camera.

May you like

And the final words captured on the recording were:

“Once Claire is gone, Daniel will finally be ours.””
