Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Hospital Door
“Marcus?””
I could barely say his name.
Evelyn's voice remained measured.
“The archived visitor record shows a temporary authorization issued under Marcus Reed's name. It was used to access the restricted ward at 9:31 p.m., approximately twenty minutes before the hospital called you.””
I gripped the kitchen counter.
“He told me he saw Simone leaving Elena's room.””
“That may still be true.””
“Or he went into the room himself.””
“We don't know that yet.””
I closed my eyes.
Three years.
Three years of Marcus telling me he had arrived after the doctors called.
Three years of Marcus helping me raise Lily.
Three years of Marcus standing beside me while I grieved.
And now his name appeared on the hospital record.
“Evelyn,” I whispered, “what if I've been trusting the wrong person this entire time?””
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she said, “Come to my office. Bring Adrian Mercer if he's willing. We need to review the evidence together.””
I ended the call.
Adrian was still waiting on the other line.
I told him what had happened.
He went silent.
Then he said, “Darius, there's something you need to understand about Richard Vale.””
“What?””
“He doesn't do anything unless he believes he can control the people involved.””
I stared at the floor.
“And Simone?””
“She learned from him.””
By noon, I was sitting across from Evelyn with Adrian Mercer beside me.
Adrian looked older than he did in his professional photograph. There were deep lines around his eyes, and he carried himself like a man who had spent years regretting something.
He placed a thick envelope on the desk.
“These are copies of the documents I kept after my engagement to Simone ended.””
Evelyn opened it.
Inside were financial inquiries, copies of correspondence, and a proposed management agreement concerning Adrian's mother's assets.
I recognized the format immediately.
It was nearly identical to the guardianship document Simone had prepared for Lily.
Same structure.
Same language.
Same attempt to present financial control as a protective arrangement.
Evelyn compared the pages.
“These appear to have been prepared using the same document template.””
Adrian nodded.
“Richard's company used it.””
I leaned forward.
“Did Simone prepare the documents herself?””
“I don't know. But she delivered them to me and asked me to sign.””
“What happened when you refused?””
“She cried. She said I didn't trust her. Then she told me her father had already spent money arranging everything.””
I looked away.
I had heard those arguments.
Different circumstances.
Same performance.
Adrian continued.
“When I asked why her father was involved in my mother's finances, she said he was only helping us prepare for the future.””
Evelyn examined one of the signatures.
“Did you obtain a handwriting analysis?””
“Yes. It was inconclusive. The investigation didn't establish who had signed the document.””
“Do you still have the original?””
Adrian nodded.
“I brought it.””
Evelyn carefully placed the document into a protective folder.
“An independent expert may be able to compare it with the documents Darius found.””
I watched her work.
For the first time, I began to understand that the nightmare I was living might not have started with me.
Simone had been moving through people's lives, presenting herself as a helper, a partner, a future wife.
And wherever she went, financial documents followed.
I turned to Adrian.
“Did she ever mention Elena?””
He nodded.
“Once.””
“When?””
“A few days before our engagement ended.””
“What did she say?””
“She told me a woman was making accusations against her father and threatening to destroy the family business.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Did she name her?””
“No. But after Elena contacted me, I understood who she meant.””
“And you didn't warn me?””
Adrian looked at me.
“I didn't know you existed until your email arrived.””
The answer stopped me.
Of course he hadn't.
Unlike Marcus, Adrian hadn't watched me build a relationship with Simone.
He hadn't stood beside me at the altar rehearsal.
He hadn't held Lily's hand while she practiced walking down the aisle.
I looked at Evelyn.
“We need to find Marcus.””
She nodded.
“I've already contacted him. He's on his way.””
Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.
He stopped in the doorway when he saw Adrian.
His expression changed.
“You.””
Adrian stood.
“Hello, Marcus.””
I looked between them.
“You know each other?””
Marcus swallowed.
“We met once.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Twice.””
The room went silent.
I stood.
“When?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Marcus stared at the floor.
“After Elena contacted Adrian, I went to see him. I wanted to know what he had told her.””
“Why?”” I demanded.
“Because Elena was frightened. She thought Simone and Richard were trying to use her insurance policy for something illegal.””
“And you were trying to help?””
“Yes.””
Adrian folded his arms.
“Then why did you ask me not to speak to Darius?””
I turned slowly toward Marcus.
“What?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I didn't want Darius dragged into something we couldn't prove.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You told me Elena was emotionally unstable because of her medical history. You said she was misinterpreting ordinary business records.””
My stomach twisted.
Marcus looked at him.
“I was repeating what Richard told me.””
“And you believed Richard over Elena?”” Adrian asked.
“No. I was trying to keep everyone calm.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Calm?””
I stepped toward him.
“My wife was investigating suspicious financial activity. She was receiving threats. She was afraid for our daughter. And you were telling people she was unstable?””
Marcus looked at me.
“I made a mistake.””
“You keep calling them mistakes.””
His face crumpled.
“I know.””
“No. A mistake is forgetting someone's birthday. A mistake is taking the wrong exit on the highway. You helped people dismiss my wife's concerns while she was trying to protect our family.””
He didn't defend himself.
Evelyn raised a hand.
“Marcus, we need to discuss the hospital record.””
He looked at her.
“What record?””
She placed the printed authorization on the desk.
His name appeared clearly near the top.
Marcus stared at it.
Then he sat down without being asked.
“I didn't use that,” he whispered.
“Your authorization was used,” Evelyn replied.
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“You know?””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“Simone called me that night. She said Elena had agreed to speak with her but the hospital wouldn't let her through because visiting hours were restricted.””
My hands tightened into fists.
“And?””
“She asked whether I could help.””
“Did you?””
Marcus nodded.
“I worked with a hospital fundraising committee. I knew someone in administration. I asked whether a temporary authorization could be issued for a family-related visit.””
I felt sick.
“You arranged access for Simone?””
“Yes.””
“And you lied about it for three years?””
“I didn't know what happened afterward.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because when Elena died, I thought everyone would blame me for letting Simone in.””
I stared at him.
“You let her into my wife's room.””
“Yes.””
“You saw her leave.””
“Yes.””
“And then you told me you arrived after the doctors called.””
He began crying.
“I was afraid, Darius. I thought if I told you, you'd never forgive me.””
I stepped back.
“You were right.””
The room went silent.
Marcus covered his face.
For a moment, I wanted to shout. I wanted to demand that he tell me exactly what Simone had done inside that room.
But the truth was that he didn't know.
Or claimed not to.
And anger wouldn't make the missing evidence appear.
Evelyn spoke carefully.
“The authorization establishes that Marcus facilitated access. It does not establish what happened inside Elena's room. We need the medical records and any retained security footage.””
Adrian leaned forward.
“There's another possibility.””
We turned toward him.
He looked at Marcus.
“Did Simone ever tell you why she wanted to see Elena that night?””
Marcus shook his head.
“She said Elena had agreed to sign something.””
My stomach dropped.
“Sign what?””
“She wouldn't tell me.””
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“Richard was trying to obtain Elena's approval for the financial agreement. If Simone went there with a document, she may have been trying to get Elena to sign it before Darius returned.””
I stared at the authorization.
That made sense.
Not a conclusion.
Not proof of what happened.
But a reason Simone might have gone to the hospital.
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“We need to locate the original agreement and determine whether it was ever executed.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Did Simone leave with any papers?””
He shook his head.
“I didn't see.””
“Did she look upset?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She was crying. She kept saying Elena had ruined everything.””
I felt a chill move through me.
“What else?””
Marcus swallowed.
“She said Richard would never forgive her.””
Evelyn wrote that down.
Then she looked at me.
“Darius, I recommend we provide all of this to the investigators handling your report. The hospital may also have a record of whether Elena signed any documents that evening.””
I nodded.
My phone vibrated.
Nia.
I stepped into the hallway to answer.
“Darius?””
Her voice was strained.
“What's wrong?””
“Simone came to your house.””
My heart stopped.
“Is Lily okay?””
“Yes. She's with me. I didn't let Simone inside.””
I pressed my hand against the wall.
“What happened?””
“She stood outside the front door and demanded to see Lily.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed to apologize.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did she leave?””
“Yes. But before she went, she pushed something through the mail slot.””
“What?””
“A photograph.””
My pulse quickened.
“Of what?””
“Lily and Elena.””
I froze.
Nia continued.
“It's an old photograph. Elena is holding Lily when she was a baby. There's writing on the back.””
“What does it say?””
Nia hesitated.
Then she read the words aloud.
Tell Darius his wife wasn't the only one keeping secrets.
I looked through the office window.
Marcus sat hunched over the table.
Adrian was speaking quietly with Evelyn.
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
“Nia, put the photograph somewhere safe. Don't let Lily see the writing.””
“Okay.””
“And don't open the door for Simone again.””
“I won't.””
I ended the call.
When I returned to the office, Evelyn looked up.
“What happened?””
“Simone went to my house. She left a photograph of Elena and Lily with a message on the back.””
Marcus lifted his head.
“What message?””
I told him.
His expression changed.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
“There is something I need to show you.””
I stared at him.
“What now?””
He opened an old photograph stored in his cloud archive.
It showed Elena standing outside the hospital.
Beside her was a woman whose face was partly hidden by a scarf.
Simone.
Marcus zoomed in.
Then he pointed to something in Elena's hand.
A small white envelope.
I recognized it.
It was the same style as the envelope Simone had kept in the bridal suite.
Marcus looked at me.
“Elena gave Simone that envelope before she died.””
I felt my blood turn cold.
“What was inside?””
He shook his head.
“I never knew.””
Evelyn stood.
“Darius, I need you to look at the date on that photograph.””
I did.
It had been taken four days before Elena died.
One day before she wrote the letter warning me about Simone.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“If Elena gave Simone an envelope before her death, and Simone kept a similar envelope until your wedding, we need to determine whether they're connected.””
I stared at the photograph.
For the first time, I realized that Simone might not simply have been hiding what she knew about Elena.
She might have been holding something Elena had intended for me.
Something she had kept for three years.
And something she had nearly taken into our marriage.
My phone vibrated again.
A message from Simone.
*You want the truth about your wife? Come to the bridal suite alone. Bring the envelope.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*And don't bring Marcus. He's the reason Elena never got to tell you everything.*
