Chapter 6: The Father of My Fiancée

I stood beside the fence long after Richard Vale disappeared.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was afraid of him.

Because of what he had said.

Your wife made the same mistake you just did.

He hadn't denied knowing Elena.

He hadn't denied the financial records.

He hadn't even pretended he was there by accident.

He had come to the storage facility while we were inside, taken Lily's backpack, and tried to leave with it.

There was no innocent explanation for that.

I called the police.

Then I called Lily.

She answered from inside the SUV, her voice small and frightened.

“Daddy?””

“I'm right here, sweetheart. Are you okay?””

“Yes.””

“Is the car locked?””

“Yes, Daddy.””

“Stay inside. Don't open the door for anyone except me.””

“Okay.””

I returned to the unit and found Marcus standing near the filing cabinet.

He looked sick.

“That was Richard Vale,” he said.

“I know.””

“Darius, you need to understand something. If he came here himself, he knows Elena left evidence.””

“And now he knows I have it.””

Marcus looked at the boxes.

“How much did you take?””

“Enough.””

He shook his head.

“We need to get everything to the police.””

“We will.””

“Now.””

I studied him.

For three years, I had trusted Marcus with every vulnerable part of my life. I had allowed him to help raise Lily. I had given him keys to my house. I had named him as a potential guardian in my own will because I believed he would protect my daughter if anything happened to me.

Now I wasn't sure whether I could trust him with a piece of paper.

“Before we leave,” I said, “I want you to answer one question.””

He nodded.

“Did you know Richard was threatening Elena?””

Marcus's face crumpled.

“I knew he was pressuring her.””

“What does that mean?””

“After Elena discovered the inquiries, she asked me to speak with Richard. She wanted him to stop accessing information about the policy.””

“And?””

“He told me he had no idea what she was talking about.””

“But you didn't believe him.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

“I told him to leave Elena alone.””

Marcus looked down at his hands.

“He laughed.””

I waited.

“He said Elena was making a mistake by getting involved in things she didn't understand. He told me she had agreed to help his family with something, and now she was trying to back out.””

“What had she agreed to?””

“I never found out.””

“Did you ask?””

“Yes. He told me it wasn't my business.””

I stared at him.

“And you let that be the end of it?””

“No. I kept looking.””

“Apparently not hard enough.””

He accepted the accusation without protest.

I gathered the documents and placed them in a secure bag. We left the storage facility through the main entrance, where the attendant was already speaking to the police.

Two officers arrived within minutes.

I explained what had happened, showed them the messages, and provided the photograph of Richard taken from the facility's security camera.

They asked whether I wanted to file a formal report.

“Yes,” I said.

“And I want the attempted entry documented. He took property that belonged to my daughter.””

One officer nodded.

“We'll need a full statement. We'll also request the facility's camera footage.””

I handed over copies of the documents, keeping the originals secured.

When the officers finished, I drove home with Marcus following in his own car.

I didn't want to bring him inside.

But I needed to understand what Elena had discovered, and he was the only person who could help me reconstruct the missing pieces.

Lily was waiting on the sofa when I arrived.

The moment I entered, she ran toward me.

“Daddy!””

I caught her in my arms.

“I'm here.””

She squeezed me around the neck.

“Someone came to the window.””

My heart lurched.

“What?””

She pointed toward the living room.

“I saw a man outside before you left. He looked through the curtains.””

I knelt.

“Did he come inside?””

“No.””

“Did he talk to you?””

She shook her head.

“He just looked at me. Then he went away.””

I held her close.

“You did the right thing by staying inside the car earlier. I'm proud of you.””

She leaned against me.

“Was it the man who took my bag?””

I looked toward Marcus, who had stopped in the doorway.

“Yes,” I said.

“But we got it back.””

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“Why does he want my things?””

I didn't know how to answer that without frightening her further.

So I told her the truth I could safely give her.

“Because some adults make bad choices when they want something. But it's our job to make sure those choices don't hurt you.””

She looked at Marcus.

“Does Uncle Marcus know him?””

Marcus crouched beside us.

“Yes, Lily. I know him.””

“Is he a bad man?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I think he's done some very bad things. And I'm sorry I didn't help your daddy find out sooner.””

Lily considered him.

Then she asked, “Did you let Simone cut my hair?””

Marcus's face collapsed.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But you knew she didn't like me.””

He looked at the floor.

“I knew she was unhappy about some things. I should have taken that more seriously.””

Lily pulled away from him.

“Daddy says people should tell the truth.””

Marcus nodded.

“He's right.””

“Then why didn't you?””

For a moment, Marcus seemed unable to breathe.

Finally, he answered.

“Because I was afraid of what the truth would do to the people I loved.””

Lily's expression didn't soften.

“But lying hurt them anyway.””

Marcus lowered his head.

“Yes,” he whispered.

“It did.””

She took my hand and led me toward the sofa.

“Can we have some hot chocolate?””

I almost laughed at the normality of the question.

After a day that had torn apart my engagement and opened a three-year-old mystery, my daughter still wanted the small rituals that made home feel safe.

“Of course, baby.””

I made her hot chocolate with extra marshmallows. She sat wrapped in her blanket while I combed the remaining curls gently with my fingers, careful not to pull at the damaged section.

When she finished her drink, I helped her upstairs and tucked her into bed.

She held my wrist before I could stand.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“If someone marries you, do they get to be my mom?””

I sat beside her.

“No. They become someone in our family, but they don't get to replace anyone. And they don't get to decide that you have to change who you are.””

She looked at the wall for a moment.

“Will I have another mom someday?””

I thought of Elena.

Of Simone.

Of the promises I had made without knowing what lay beneath them.

“Maybe you'll have another grown-up who loves you and takes care of you. But nobody will ever replace your mother.””

Lily nodded.

Then she whispered, “I wish Mommy was here.””

I kissed her forehead.

“So do I.””

She fell asleep holding my hand.

I stayed until her breathing became steady, then closed her bedroom door almost all the way and returned downstairs.

Marcus was sitting at the kitchen table.

Beside him lay a new document.

“I found this in the folder you brought back,” he said.

It was a copy of a trust amendment.

The date was three weeks before Elena died.

The amendment would have transferred a portion of the insurance proceeds into an account managed by a third-party financial company.

The signature at the bottom looked like Elena's.

But something was wrong.

I recognized the signature from the letters she had written me. Elena always made the final stroke of her surname curve upward. On this document, it curved down.

I held it beneath the kitchen light.

“This isn't her signature.””

Marcus nodded.

“I thought the same thing.””

“Who submitted it?””

“The paperwork lists an attorney's office that handled some of Richard's business accounts.””

I looked up.

“Did Elena ever use that office?””

“Not that I know of.””

I placed the document beside the guardianship agreement Simone had tried to keep hidden.

Two different documents.

Two different dates.

Both connected to attempts to gain control over Lily's financial future.

And both bore signatures that might have been forged.

My phone rang.

Evelyn Brooks, Elena's attorney.

I answered immediately.

“Ms. Brooks, I need to see you as soon as possible.””

“I was hoping you'd call. I received confirmation that you located Elena's storage unit.””

“How?””

“Your wife arranged for the facility to notify me if anyone accessed the box.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Did you know that?””

He shook his head.

I returned to the call.

“I found documents concerning an attempted change to Elena's insurance beneficiary. I also found a forged guardianship agreement.””

There was a long silence.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“I was afraid this might happen.””

“What do you know?””

“I know Elena discovered that someone had attempted to redirect part of the policy proceeds. I also know she refused to approve the change.””

“Who submitted it?””

“I cannot identify the person responsible without reviewing the original file. But I can tell you that the proposed recipient was connected to Richard Vale's business.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Was Simone involved?””

“I have evidence suggesting she communicated with the office that submitted the request. I cannot yet establish whether she knew the full purpose of the transaction.””

I glanced at the guardianship agreement.

“She tried to gain control over Lily's inheritance after I married her.””

“Then I strongly recommend that you secure your estate documents, notify your bank, and consult an independent attorney about Lily's trust.””

“I will.””

Evelyn paused.

“There is something else. Elena left a second letter with me. She instructed me to give it to you only if Simone became engaged to you or attempted to assume a parental role in Lily's life.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why didn't you contact me when I got engaged?””

“I tried. Three weeks ago, I called your office and left a message. I also sent a letter to your home.””

“I never received it.””

“That concerns me.””

“Can you send me a copy?””

“I'd rather give it to you in person. The letter contains information about Elena's final days that I believe you need to hear directly.””

I glanced toward the staircase.

“When can we meet?””

“Tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock. My office.””

“I'll be there.””

After I ended the call, Marcus sat motionless.

I looked at him.

“You knew Elena had left another letter?””

“No.””

“Did you know she had contacted Evelyn?””

He shook his head.

I believed him this time.

Not because I trusted him completely, but because I could see the difference between guilt and calculation.

Marcus looked like a man who had spent three years running from something and had finally realized that it was standing directly in front of him.

“I want to help,” he said.

I leaned back in my chair.

“I don't know if I can trust you.””

“I understand.””

“I don't know if we'll ever be friends again.””

He nodded.

“But I'll tell you everything I know. Even if it means losing you.””

I studied him.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Did Elena ever tell you she thought Simone wanted to hurt her?””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“No. She never said that.””

“Did she think Simone was dangerous?””

He stared at the table.

“She said Simone was willing to cross lines other people wouldn't.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning she believed Simone would do almost anything to get what she wanted.””

I looked at the papers.

“And what did she want?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he reached into his jacket and removed a folded note.

“Elena gave me this the last time I saw her alive.””

I took it.

The handwriting was hurried, the ink uneven.

Marcus, if I can't fix this myself, promise me you'll protect Darius and Lily. Don't let Richard or Simone convince him that the past is finished. They know what happened, even if they pretend they don't.

At the bottom, Elena had written one final sentence.

And if Darius ever asks about the night I died, tell him to look at the hospital's visitor log.

I stared at the words.

“What happened the night Elena died?””

Marcus went pale.

“I don't know everything.””

I stood.

“Then we're going to find out.””

He looked toward the staircase, where Lily was sleeping.

“Darius, there's something I haven't told you about that night.””

I waited.

Marcus swallowed.

“I was at the hospital.””

I felt the room go silent.

“You told me you never went there.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I saw someone leave Elena's room shortly before the doctors called you.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the front door.

May you like

Then he whispered a name.

“Simone.””
