Chapter 9: The Wedding That Never Happened
I didn't go to the bridal suite alone.
That was the first decision I made without allowing Simone to control the terms.
I forwarded her messages to Evelyn, contacted the officer handling the report, and arranged for the hotel to preserve its security footage.
Then I called Simone.
She answered immediately.
“Darius.””
Her voice was soft.
Almost relieved.
For one terrible second, it sounded like the woman I had loved.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“At the hotel.””
“Why?””
“Because I need to explain what happened.””
“You had fourteen months to explain who you were.””
She exhaled.
“I know you're angry.””
“Don't tell me what I am.””
A pause.
Then she said, “I didn't want Lily to get hurt.””
I looked toward the office window.
“Yet you held her down and cut her hair.””
“I was upset. I made a mistake.””
“You told her she embarrassed you.””
“I didn't mean it like that.””
“You told her I'd love her more if she looked different.””
Silence.
I could hear her breathing.
Then she whispered, “I was jealous.””
The admission caught me off guard.
“Of my daughter?””
“Of what she represents.””
I closed my eyes.
“Elena.””
Simone didn't answer.
I felt something inside me settle.
“You were jealous of a dead woman.””
Her voice sharpened.
“You have no idea what it's like to walk into a house where every room is a memorial. Every photograph. Every story. Every little thing Lily does reminds you of Elena.””
“She's her mother.””
“And I'm supposed to spend the rest of my life living in her shadow?””
I stared at the wall.
“No, Simone. You were supposed to love the child whose life you wanted to join.””
She began crying.
“I wanted us to be a family.””
“You wanted us to look like the family you imagined. There's a difference.””
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked, “What was in the envelope Elena gave you?””
Her breathing changed.
“How do you know about that?””
“I know enough.””
“Did Marcus tell you?””
“Answer the question.””
She lowered her voice.
“Come to the hotel. I'll explain everything.””
“No private meeting. If you have something Elena left for me, give it to Evelyn.””
“Darius, please.””
“That's the only way.””
I ended the call.
Two hours later, I was back at the hotel where I had nearly married Simone.
The ballroom had been emptied.
The flowers were gone.
The white aisle runner had been rolled up and stacked beside a service door. Staff members were removing the final decorations, their movements quiet and efficient.
I remembered standing in that room during the rehearsal, watching Lily walk between the chairs with her flower basket.
She had stopped halfway down the aisle, looked at me, and grinned.
Daddy, I'm going to be the prettiest flower girl ever.
I had told her she already was.
Now I looked at the empty room and felt nothing for the wedding that hadn't happened.
No regret.
No longing.
Only a deep, exhausted sadness for the daughter who had been hurt in the middle of it.
Evelyn walked beside me.
A hotel manager led us to a private conference room where Simone had agreed to meet. The officer handling the report was present nearby, and Simone had been told she could bring legal counsel if she wished.
She hadn't.
When we entered, she was sitting at the far end of a long table.
Her wedding dress was gone.
She wore a plain black sweater and trousers. Her hair was pulled into a loose bun, and her eyes were swollen.
For a moment, she looked younger than I remembered.
Then she saw me.
“Darius.””
I didn't answer.
Evelyn sat beside me.
“We're here to receive any documents you believe are relevant to Elena Cole's estate or the matters currently being investigated.””
Simone looked at her.
“I wanted to speak to Darius privately.””
“He has declined,” Evelyn replied.
Simone's jaw tightened.
She reached into her handbag and removed a white envelope.
My heart began pounding.
It was old.
The edges were worn, and the paper had yellowed slightly.
She placed it on the table.
“Elena gave me this.””
I stared at it.
“Why did you keep it?””
Simone looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
Another person who had hidden the truth because they were afraid.
I was beginning to hate that word.
Evelyn opened the envelope carefully.
Inside were three folded pages and a small photograph.
She examined the first page.
Then she looked at Simone.
“This appears to be a signed statement from Elena.””
Simone nodded.
“She wrote it after we met.””
“What does it say?”” I asked.
Evelyn handed it to me.
I unfolded the paper.
The first line made my throat tighten.
Darius,
I met Simone Vale because I believed she could help me understand what her father had done.
I did not know whether she was part of it or whether he was using her.
She told me she wanted to make things right.
I looked up at Simone.
“You told Elena you wanted to help her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you?””
Simone's eyes filled.
“Because my father threatened me.””
“With what?””
“He said if I gave Elena the records, he'd tell everyone I had helped him obtain her financial information.””
“Had you?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The word seemed to drain the air from the room.
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Simone, are you saying you participated in accessing Elena's financial records without authorization?””
Simone swallowed.
“I worked for my father. He told me he needed the information for a client review. I didn't know what he intended to do with it.””
“But you discovered it later,” Evelyn said.
“Yes.””
“And you didn't report it?””
“No.””
I stared at her.
“You let Elena believe you were helping her.””
“I was trying to help her.””
“By keeping the evidence?””
Simone began crying.
“My father said he'd ruin my life if I went against him.””
I looked at the documents in my hand.
Elena's statement continued.
Richard Vale attempted to persuade me to approve a financial arrangement involving my insurance policy. I refused. I told Simone that if her father continued, I would report everything.
Simone said she could obtain proof of his involvement, but she needed time.
I agreed to give her one week.
The date was four days before Elena died.
I looked at Simone.
“She gave you one week.””
Simone nodded.
“She died before the week was over.””
“And you kept this letter for three years.””
“I didn't know what to do.””
I stared at her.
“You knew exactly what to do. You just didn't want to face the consequences.””
She looked away.
Evelyn examined the second page.
It contained a handwritten list of financial transfers, including the payment of $18,500 and several references to Vale Advisory Services.
The third page was different.
It was a personal letter.
Elena had written:
Simone,
I want to believe you when you say you were misled by your father. But I cannot allow my daughter to become collateral in someone else's financial problems.
If you truly want to make things right, give these records to Evelyn Brooks and tell the truth.
Do not contact Darius privately. He deserves to hear this from me.
And please understand something: Lily is not a problem to be solved. She is a child who deserves to be loved without conditions.
My vision blurred.
I read the final sentence again.
Elena had understood something about Simone that I had failed to see.
Even before Lily knew her name.
I looked across the table.
“You read this?””
Simone nodded.
“Many times.””
“And you still cut my daughter's hair.””
She began shaking her head.
“Darius—”
“You knew what Elena said about Lily. You knew how important her hair was to her. You knew she loved those curls because they reminded her of her mother.””
“I was trying to make everything look perfect.””
“Perfect for whom?””
Simone covered her mouth.
I leaned forward.
“You didn't hurt Lily because of a hairstyle. You hurt her because she reminded you that my life existed before you.””
Tears rolled down Simone's cheeks.
“I know.””
I sat back.
For the first time, I believed she understood what she had done.
But understanding wasn't forgiveness.
And remorse wasn't permission to come back.
Evelyn placed the documents into a protective folder.
“We'll provide these to the investigators. Simone, I strongly recommend that you obtain legal advice before making any further statements.””
Simone nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“There's one more thing.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small digital storage device.
“My father kept copies of the financial records. He also kept correspondence about Elena.””
Evelyn held out her hand.
Simone didn't give it to her.
Instead, she looked directly at me.
“Darius, I need you to promise me something.””
“No.””
She flinched.
“Please. Just listen.””
“I'm listening.””
“If this proves what I think it proves, I need you to understand that I didn't know what my father was going to do.””
My stomach tightened.
“Do about what?””
Simone's voice dropped.
“The hospital.””
The room went still.
Evelyn leaned forward.
“What do you know about the hospital?””
Simone stared at the storage device.
“My father knew Elena was going to report him. He knew she was ill. He knew she was alone that evening.””
I felt my pulse pounding in my ears.
“Did he go there?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know. But he called me before I visited her. He told me I needed to convince her to sign the agreement.””
“And did you?””
“No.””
“What happened?””
Simone closed her eyes.
“Elena refused. She told me she had already given the evidence to her attorney. She said I should stop protecting my father.””
Her voice broke.
“I got angry. I said things I shouldn't have said. Then I left.””
I stared at her.
“Was she alive when you left?””
Simone opened her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
I wanted to believe her.
I wanted the truth to be simple.
But nothing about the last three years had been simple.
Evelyn took the storage device and placed it into a small evidence bag.
“We'll arrange for this to be examined without altering the original files.””
Simone nodded.
Then she looked at me one final time.
“I did love you, Darius.””
I stood.
“No. You loved the life you thought I could give you.””
She began crying again.
I looked toward the door.
“Lily asked me whether I was still going to marry you.””
Simone lifted her head.
“What did you tell her?””
“That I wouldn't marry someone who made her afraid.””
Her face crumpled.
I picked up my coat.
“And I meant it.””
That evening, I returned home to find Lily sitting at the kitchen table with Nia.
Her hair looked different.
The stylist had carefully shaped the damaged section into a soft, asymmetrical style that preserved as much of her natural curls as possible. A small yellow bow rested above her right ear.
Lily jumped from her chair.
“Daddy! Look!””
I crouched in front of her.
She turned her head proudly.
“It's not the same as before,” she said.
“But I picked it myself.””
I smiled.
“It looks beautiful.””
“Really?””
“Really.””
She touched the bow.
“Nia said I can wear it until my curls grow back.””
I kissed her forehead.
“Then we'll wear it proudly.””
Lily hugged me.
For a moment, I held her so tightly that she laughed.
“Daddy, you're squishing me!””
I loosened my arms.
“Sorry, baby.””
She looked up.
“Did you find out why Simone was mean?””
I glanced toward Nia.
Then I answered carefully.
“I found out she had been keeping secrets. And I found out she made choices that hurt people.””
Lily thought about that.
“Is she sorry?””
“I think she is.””
“Does that mean we have to forgive her?””
I crouched so our eyes were level.
“No, sweetheart. You don't owe anyone forgiveness just because they ask for it. You can decide what feels right for you.””
She nodded.
Then she asked, “Can I still keep my flower basket?””
My chest tightened.
“Of course.””
“Even though there wasn't a wedding?””
I smiled.
“Especially because there wasn't a wedding.””
She grinned and ran upstairs to get it.
I watched her go.
Nia stood beside me.
“She seems happier.””
“She is.””
“And you?””
I looked toward the staircase.
“I think I'm finally starting to understand what Elena was trying to tell me.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from Evelyn.
The storage device had been examined by an independent digital specialist, and the relevant files had been preserved for investigators.
One folder contained scanned financial documents.
Another contained emails.
And a third contained a recording.
Evelyn's message was brief.
*Darius, the recording appears to have been made at the hospital on the night Elena died. It contains Richard Vale's voice. You need to hear this.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*It also contains Elena's final recorded words.*
