Chapter 9: The Recording

We moved through the dark corridor without speaking.

Emergency lights cast everything in pulsing red.

The gunshot had come from somewhere near the command offices.

General Hayes motioned for everyone to stay behind him.

Brooks drew his weapon.

I didn't have one.

But I had something more important.

The cassette.

I kept it inside my fist.

My father walked beside me.

For the first time in my life, I didn't recognize him.

Not because he looked different.

Because I was finally seeing him without the protection of family mythology.

He wasn't simply Dad.

He was a man who had spent twenty-three years carrying a secret.

A man who had helped hide my child.

A man who had watched my career collapse.

And a man who, apparently, had been fighting someone far more powerful than Jason.

We reached the command hallway.

A body lay near the doorway.

I stopped.

It was one of the security officers.

Alive.

Barely.

General Hayes crouched beside him.

“Who did this?””

The officer struggled to speak.

“Turner.””

“Where?””

He pointed toward the command office.

“Inside.””

We moved.

The door was open.

The office was empty.

Except for one thing.

A telephone receiver swinging from its cord.

I stepped inside.

The phone stopped ringing.

Then a voice came from the speakers.

Jason.

“You always were predictable, Rachel.””

I froze.

The door behind us slammed shut.

Madison screamed.

“Jason!””

His voice remained calm.

“You brought everyone exactly where I needed them.””

General Hayes looked around.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

“Somewhere you can't reach.””

My father stepped forward.

“Jason.””

The laughter stopped.

“You.””

My father stared at the phone.

“It's over.””

“No.””

Jason's voice became colder.

“You should have stayed retired.””

“You should have left my daughter alone.””

“You ruined everything.””

My father shook his head.

“I protected her.””

“You destroyed her life.””

“I saved it.””

Jason laughed.

“Tell her.””

My father looked at me.

I waited.

Jason spoke again.

“Tell Rachel what you really did.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I altered the original investigation.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“I changed the report.””

“You blamed me.””

“I had no choice.””

“You made me look guilty.””

“I needed Jason to believe you had no evidence.””

“Why?””

“Because you did.””

I looked at the cassette.

Jason's voice came through the speaker.

“Play it, Rachel.””

My fingers tightened.

“Play what?””

“The tape.””

I looked at my father.

Jason laughed softly.

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

My father whispered,

“The tape isn't what you think.””

I stared at him.

Jason continued.

“Your father has spent twenty-three years protecting one lie.””

“Which lie?””

“That Ethan was your son.””

Silence.

Ethan stepped forward.

“What?””

Jason's voice became almost gentle.

“Rachel, ask your father why the birth certificate was changed.””

I turned.

“Dad?””

He looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“I changed it because…”

He stopped.

“Because what?””

“Because Ethan wasn't the child you gave birth to.””

Nobody moved.

Ethan's face went blank.

“What?””

My father looked at him.

“I am sorry.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

“You were taken to the hospital after the attack.””

“I know.””

“You gave birth.””

“I know.””

“But the baby died.””

The words shattered the room.

I couldn't breathe.

“What?””

My father continued.

“You gave birth to a baby boy.””

My knees weakened.

“He died after birth.””

“No.””

“I held him.””

“No.””

“I saw him.””

My father looked at me.

“You saw another baby.””

My stomach turned.

“Whose?””

He didn't answer.

Ethan whispered,

“Then who am I?””

Jason's voice came through the speaker.

“That's the question.””

I looked toward the ceiling.

“Where are you?””

“Close.””

“What did you do?””

“I saved Ethan.””

My father shouted,

“You stole him!””

Jason's voice sharpened.

“I kept him alive.””

“You used him.””

“I protected him.””

“You blackmailed everyone around him.””

“I did what was necessary.””

I stared at the phone.

“Why?””

Jason went silent.

Then he said,

“Because Ethan is the only person who can prove who your father really was.””

I looked at Dad.

“What does that mean?””

Jason continued.

“Your father wasn't an undercover informant.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“He was the one running the operation.””

My world tilted.

“No.””

Jason laughed.

“He recruited Victor Kane.””

My father whispered,

“Jason, stop.””

“He created the contractor network.””

“Stop.””

“He took the money.””

“Enough.””

“And when the government came close, he sacrificed Rachel.””

I turned toward my father.

“Is that true?””

He didn't answer.

“Dad.””

His silence was enough.

I stepped backward.

All those years.

All those accusations.

All those explanations.

My father had not merely protected me.

He had been protecting himself.

I looked at Ethan.

“Then why did Jason say he wasn't your father?””

Ethan's eyes were fixed on the phone.

Jason answered.

“Because I'm not.””

I stared.

“Then who is?””

Jason said nothing.

The silence stretched.

Then he spoke.

“Your mother knows.””

I grabbed the phone.

“Where is she?””

No answer.

“Jason!””

The line went dead.

General Hayes immediately ordered the communications team to trace it.

Brooks turned toward my father.

“You knew.””

My father nodded.

“I knew Jason wasn't Ethan's father.””

“But you knew who was.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

My father looked at Ethan.

“You need to hear it from your mother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Rachel.””

“No more secrets.””

He looked exhausted.

“Then call her.””

I pulled out my phone.

My mother's number.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

She answered.

“Rachel?””

“Mom.””

She started crying before I spoke.

“You know.””

“Yes.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“When I knew it was safe.””

“It was never safe.””

She sobbed.

“I'm sorry.””

“Who is Ethan's father?””

Silence.

“Mom.””

“I can't.””

“You can.””

“I was sworn to secrecy.””

“By whom?””

Another silence.

Then she whispered,

“By the government.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who was the father?””

My mother's voice broke.

“Your father.””

I stared at Dad.

He looked down.

Ethan stepped forward.

“My grandfather?””

Mom continued.

“Your father wasn't Rachel's father by blood.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

She said the words slowly.

“Rachel was adopted.””

I couldn't move.

The room disappeared.

My father looked at me.

“I was never your biological father.””

I stared at him.

“You raised me.””

“Yes.””

“But Ethan…”

“Is your biological son.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then at Dad.

Then at the cassette.

Everything I'd known about my family had just collapsed.

My mother continued.

“Your biological father was an officer who died before you were born.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered a name.

“Daniel Brooks.””

I looked at the man standing beside me.

He had gone completely white.

Brooks shook his head.

“No.””

My mother was crying.

“He never knew.””

I turned toward Brooks.

He stared at Ethan.

Ethan stared back.

The resemblance suddenly seemed obvious.

The eyes.

The jaw.

The expression.

Brooks stepped backward.

“This can't be true.””

I couldn't speak.

Then the cassette recorder in my hand suddenly clicked.

I hadn't pressed anything.

The tape began playing.

A young version of my own voice came through the speaker.

Crying.

Terrified.

Then Jason's voice.

“Tell me where the evidence is.””

My younger voice answered.

“I won't.””

“You don't understand what you're protecting.””

“I know who you are.””

Jason laughed.

Then another man's voice entered the recording.

A voice I recognized.

Brooks.

Young.

Afraid.

“Jason, let her go.””

The tape crackled.

Then my younger voice whispered,

“Daniel, he's Ethan's father.””

The room went silent.

Brooks stared at me.

Then at Ethan.

The recording continued.

Jason said one final sentence.

“If she remembers, we're all finished.””

The tape stopped.

Nobody moved.

Then a message appeared on the command-room monitor.

*ONE HOUR.*

Below it:

*BRING RACHEL TO THE OLD HOSPITAL.*

And beneath that:

*COME ALONE.*

I stared at the screen.

General Hayes stepped toward me.

“You're not going.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then at Brooks.

Then at the name on the screen.

I had spent twenty-three years believing my family had protected me.

Six years believing Jason had destroyed me.

Now I knew neither story was true.

Someone had been manipulating all of us since before I was old enough to understand what was happening.

And whoever had just summoned me to the abandoned hospital knew one thing none of us had fully understood yet.

The truth about Ethan wasn't the end of the conspiracy.

It was the beginning.
