Chapter 8: The Father’s Lie

We moved into a secure operations room before midnight.

The doors locked behind us.

The evidence was placed on the table.

Every document was photographed.

Every page was logged.

Nobody touched anything without gloves.

Yet I couldn't stop staring at the single line I'd pulled from the burning box.

*JASON TURNER — BIOLOGICAL FATHER*

It was typed on an official-looking form.

A federal seal appeared in the corner.

The case number matched.

Everything looked legitimate.

Everything except the man sitting across from me.

Ethan.

He stared at the document with the same confusion I felt.

“That's not the original,” he said.

General Hayes looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw it.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

“Where?””

“In Laura's safe.””

Brooks leaned forward.

“What did the original say?””

Ethan looked at me.

“It didn't name Jason.””

“Who did it name?””

He hesitated.

“Unknown male.””

I exhaled.

“So someone changed it.””

“Yes.””

“Jason?””

“I think so.””

General Hayes examined the page.

“Why would he create a document saying he's the father?””

Ethan looked at me.

“To make you believe he had a claim over me.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he need that?””

“Because you were becoming dangerous.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

“Your military career.””

Brooks nodded slowly.

“He needed leverage.””

Ethan continued.

“Jason knew if you ever recovered your career, you might reopen the old investigation.””

I looked at the evidence.

“And you were the leverage.””

“Yes.””

Madison sat silently in the corner.

She hadn't spoken since we arrived.

I turned toward her.

“You knew about Ethan.””

She shook her head.

“Not that Jason wasn't his father.””

“You knew there was a child.””

“Yes.””

“When did you find out?””

“After we got married.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Everyone was scared.””

She looked at me.

“You don't understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

Madison wiped her face.

“Jason showed me the hospital records.””

My chest tightened.

“He showed me a photograph of you.””

“What photograph?””

“You were holding Ethan.””

I stared at her.

“Where is it?””

“I don't know.””

“He kept it.””

“Of course he did.””

Madison looked down.

“He told me if I ever told you, he'd destroy our family.””

I almost laughed.

“Our family was already destroyed.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The door opened.

A military intelligence officer entered carrying a tablet.

“General.””

Hayes stood.

“What?””

“We traced the document alteration.””

“To Jason?””

“No.””

He turned the screen toward us.

“The original file was altered from a government server.””

Brooks leaned closer.

“When?””

“Six years ago.””

“Who accessed it?””

The officer hesitated.

“Colonel Turner wasn't the primary user.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who was?””

The officer looked at me.

“Your father.””

Silence.

I sat down.

“My father altered the file?””

“No.””

The officer shook his head.

“He accessed it.””

“That's different.””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

“He downloaded the original.””

“Why?””

“We don't know.””

General Hayes stepped toward the officer.

“Where is Rachel's father now?””

“Still missing.””

“Any activity?””

“Yes.””

Everyone looked at him.

“His bank account was accessed forty minutes ago.””

“From where?””

The officer looked at the tablet.

“Fort Carson.””

My heart stopped.

“He's here?””

“Apparently.””

General Hayes immediately ordered a search.

But I already knew.

Dad had been nearby.

Watching.

Waiting.

I stood.

“I want to speak to him.””

“No,” Hayes said.

“Sir.””

“You're emotionally involved.””

“So is everyone else.””

He looked at me.

“Rachel—”

“I need answers.””

He studied me.

Then nodded.

“Fine.””

We found my father in an empty chapel on the far side of the installation.

He was sitting alone in the front pew.

His jacket was gone.

His tie was loose.

He looked twenty years older than he had that afternoon.

When he saw me, he stood.

“Rachel.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Tell me the truth.””

He closed his eyes.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Did I have a baby?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Was Ethan my son?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Why did you let me believe I had never had a child?””

“Because you were sixteen.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“You were in danger.””

“From whom?””

He didn't answer.

“Dad.””

He looked toward Ethan.

Ethan stood beside Brooks.

For the first time, my father saw him.

His face collapsed.

“Oh God.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You remember me.””

My father began to cry.

“Yes.””

“You told them I was dead.””

“I had to.””

“No.””

“You don't understand.””

“I spent twenty-three years believing my mother abandoned me.””

My father shook his head.

“She didn't.””

“Then why didn't she find me?””

“Because Jason made sure she couldn't.””

My father looked at me.

“Jason discovered the pregnancy.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

“Your mother told him.””

“Why would she tell him?””

“Because he was involved with the investigation.””

I stared.

“He wasn't your friend?””

“No.””

“He was already working with you?””

My father nodded.

“He was helping the contractor.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Then why does everyone keep saying Jason was my father?””

My father hesitated.

“Because I made it possible.””

“What?””

“I created the false record.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

“To make Jason believe he was Ethan's father.””

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if Jason believed the child was his.””

“Why would that protect Ethan?””

“Because Jason would protect what he thought belonged to him.””

I shook my head.

“He tried to kill him.””

My father's face changed.

“What?””

“Jason came after Ethan.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My father looked horrified.

“He wasn't supposed to know Ethan was alive.””

I stepped closer.

“He knows now.””

My father sat down.

“Then we're out of time.””

I felt a chill.

“What do you mean?””

He looked at me.

“Jason wasn't the person I was protecting you from.””

“Who was?””

He stared toward the chapel doors.

“The contractor's owner.””

General Hayes stepped forward.

“Name.””

My father looked at him.

“Victor Kane.””

Brooks went rigid.

I noticed.

“You know him.””

Brooks nodded slowly.

“He was the civilian who financed the operation.””

My father continued.

“He had influence inside the department.””

“How much?””

“Enough to bury investigations.””

“Enough to ruin my career?””

“Yes.””

“Why me?””

“Because you accidentally saw him.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“Before the transfer.””

I tried to remember.

A hotel lobby.

A conference.

A man speaking to Jason.

A black briefcase.

I had forgotten.

Or maybe I had been made to forget.

My father continued.

“You saw Victor hand Jason the money.””

My pulse raced.

“And then?””

“You confronted Jason.””

I shook my head.

“I don't remember.””

“You were sixteen, Rachel.””

“What does my age have to do with it?””

He looked at me.

“You weren't supposed to be there.””

I stared.

“Dad.””

He took a breath.

“The night you gave birth to Ethan wasn't an accident.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You were brought to the hospital because someone attacked you.””

My knees weakened.

“Who?””

He didn't answer.

“Who attacked me?””

He looked toward Ethan.

“Jason.””

I stared at him.

“He tried to kill me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you had evidence.””

My breathing became shallow.

“What evidence?””

My father reached inside his coat.

He pulled out a small cassette tape.

Old.

Black.

Scratched.

He placed it in my hand.

“You recorded him.””

I stared at the tape.

“Me?””

“You hid the recorder in your room.””

“Why don't I remember?””

“Because after the attack, you suffered a head injury.””

I looked at Ethan.

“And the baby?””

“You gave birth two days later.””

I couldn't speak.

My father continued.

“We knew Jason would come back.””

“So you hid Ethan.””

“Yes.””

“And erased my memory.””

“No.””

My mother had.

I understood.

I looked at the tape.

“What does it contain?””

My father whispered,

“Jason admitting why he attacked you.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn't you use it?””

“Because the tape doesn't just expose Jason.””

“What else does it expose?””

He looked at General Hayes.

“Everyone.””

A phone suddenly rang.

The intelligence officer answered.

Then his face changed.

“General.””

“What?””

“We have a problem.””

He handed over the phone.

Hayes listened.

His expression hardened.

“Say that again.””

He looked at me.

“Jason has entered the command building.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

The officer shook his head.

“He used an access credential belonging to…”

He looked at the screen.

“…your father.””

My father stood abruptly.

“That credential was destroyed twenty-three years ago.””

The lights in the chapel suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then the emergency lights flickered red.

A single gunshot echoed somewhere down the corridor.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

May you like

My father whispered,

“He's here.””
