Chapter 7: The Son They Buried
The young man didn't move.
Neither did I.
For several seconds, the burning house behind us was the only thing either of us seemed able to hear.
He stood across the street in a dark jacket, his hair damp from the evening air, a photograph clutched tightly between his fingers.
He looked twenty-three.
Maybe twenty-four.
Same dark eyes.
Same narrow jaw.
Same slight crease between the eyebrows that appeared whenever he was trying not to show fear.
My eyes moved over his face again.
And then he smiled.
Not happily.
Sadly.
“You know who I am,” he said.
My throat tightened.
“Ethan?””
He nodded.
Madison made a broken sound behind me.
“Oh my God.””
Ethan looked toward her.
For one second, his expression changed.
Recognition.
Anger.
Then he looked back at me.
“I've been trying to find you for years.””
I couldn't speak.
Brooks stepped forward.
“Ethan, I'm Major Daniel Brooks.””
“I know.””
Brooks stopped.
“You know me?””
“I know everyone who was involved.””
General Hayes moved closer.
“Who told you to come here?””
Ethan shook his head.
“Nobody.””
He held up the photograph.
“I came because I knew she would finally find out.””
He looked at me.
“Who I really am.””
I crossed the street slowly.
Every instinct told me to be careful.
Not because I was afraid of him.
Because I was afraid of what his existence meant.
I stopped a few feet away.
“Where have you been?””
“Different places.””
“Who raised you?””
He looked down.
“Laura.””
“The woman whose house just burned?””
“Yes.””
“Is she alive?””
“I don't know.””
His voice cracked.
“I left her two hours ago.””
“Why?””
“Because Jason found us.””
My pulse jumped.
“Jason was there?””
“He came yesterday.””
Brooks stepped closer.
“What did he want?””
Ethan looked at him.
“To make me disappear.””
General Hayes's expression hardened.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because I found the original.””
My breath caught.
“Original what?””
“The court order.””
He pulled a folded document from inside his jacket.
My hands trembled as he handed it to me.
I opened it.
The document carried a federal seal.
The case number matched the one we'd found in the burned house.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
Then I saw the names.
*Rachel Elizabeth Turner.*
*Unknown Male — Sealed.*
And below them:
*Minor child: Ethan Bennett.*
I looked up.
“Why was the father's identity sealed?””
Ethan stared at me.
“Because he was a government informant.””
Silence.
Brooks stepped forward.
“That's impossible.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You people say that a lot.””
General Hayes took the document from me.
His eyes moved rapidly over the page.
“Who was the informant?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Your father.””
The air seemed to leave my lungs.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“That's what I thought too.””
Madison whispered, “Dad?””
Ethan nodded.
“Your father was working undercover inside the contractor's network.””
Brooks looked at General Hayes.
“That's why the case was sealed.””
Hayes's face had gone pale.
“Not just that.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You know?””
The general slowly shook his head.
“No.””
“Then you were never told the whole story.””
Brooks took the court order.
“Why was Rachel listed as the mother?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because she was.””
I couldn't breathe.
“I was sixteen.””
“I know.””
“How?””
“Laura told me.””
“What happened?””
He looked down.
“She said you didn't remember everything.””
My mind flashed with fragments.
A hospital hallway.
White lights.
My mother's voice.
A newborn crying.
Then nothing.
For years, I'd believed those fragments belonged to a nightmare.
Ethan spoke quietly.
“You were sixteen when you had me.””
Madison began crying.
“You didn't know.””
I turned toward her.
“What did you know?””
She wiped her face.
“Mom told me you were sick.””
“When?””
“The night you came home from the hospital.””
I stared.
“You knew.””
“I knew something had happened.””
“But you didn't know what.””
“No.””
Ethan interrupted.
“She knew enough.””
Madison looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Laura kept your letters.””
Madison went completely still.
“My letters?””
Ethan nodded.
“You wrote to her.””
I looked at my sister.
“What letters?””
She shook her head.
“I don't remember.””
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small bundle tied with string.
He handed it to Madison.
She recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her hands began shaking.
“Oh God.””
She untied the bundle.
The first letter was dated twenty-two years earlier.
Madison read silently.
Then she covered her mouth.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
She couldn't answer.
Ethan did.
“She asked Laura to keep me safe.””
My heart broke.
“Why would Madison write that?””
“Because she knew Jason was dangerous.””
Madison looked at Ethan.
“I didn't know he was your father.””
“He wasn't.””
The words were quiet.
But they hit the entire group like a gunshot.
I looked at Ethan.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“Jason isn't my father.””
“Then who is?””
He looked toward General Hayes.
“Your father.””
Nobody spoke.
My mind struggled to process it.
Dad had been involved.
Dad had been the informant.
Dad had hidden my pregnancy.
Dad had allowed Jason to use my life as a shield.
But why?
And why had the government sealed Ethan's identity?
Ethan stepped closer.
“Your father wasn't trying to protect Jason.””
“Then what was he doing?””
“He was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“By destroying me?””
“He thought you would be killed.””
I stared at him.
“By whom?””
Ethan looked at Brooks.
“Ask him.””
Everyone turned.
Brooks went pale.
“I don't know what he means.””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“You do.””
“No.””
“You were there.””
“Where?””
“The night my mother gave birth.””
My breath stopped.
Brooks stared at him.
Ethan continued.
“You were the investigator assigned to protect the witness.””
Brooks closed his eyes.
“I failed.””
General Hayes stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
Brooks looked at him.
“I was ordered to erase the birth record.””
My stomach dropped.
“By whom?””
Brooks didn't answer.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Your father.””
I couldn't move.
“He told me there was a threat against you,” Brooks said.
“He said if anyone discovered you had a child connected to the investigation, you'd become a target.””
“So he erased me.””
“No.””
“He erased my son.””
“He hid him.””
“Same thing.””
Brooks looked devastated.
“Rachel, I was twenty-eight. I was following orders.””
“And you never checked whether those orders were legal?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I trusted your father.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Where was I?””
“In a hospital.””
“After the birth?””
“Yes.””
“Why don't I remember?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Because they sedated you.””
My stomach turned.
“Who?””
“Your mother.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything became painfully clear.
The family story.
The unexplained months.
The missing photographs.
The years when my mother refused to discuss my sixteenth birthday.
The strange way Madison had always looked at me whenever babies were mentioned.
They hadn't forgotten.
They had buried it.
And Jason had discovered the secret years later.
Then he'd used it.
I looked at Ethan.
“How did you find me?””
“Laura.””
“Where is she?””
“I don't know.””
His voice broke.
“She told me to run.””
“From Jason?””
“Yes.””
“What happened yesterday?””
Ethan swallowed.
“He came to the house with two men.””
“Why?””
“He wanted the court order.””
“Did he get it?””
“No.””
“Where is it?””
Ethan tapped his chest.
“I memorized the case number.””
I stared at him.
“And the original?””
“Hidden.””
“Where?””
He looked toward the fire.
“In a place Jason can't reach.””
Before I could ask where, a gunshot cracked through the darkness.
Everyone dropped.
Another shot followed.
General Hayes shouted, “Down!””
I pulled Ethan behind a vehicle.
Brooks dragged Madison to the ground.
A third shot shattered the windshield of a parked car.
I looked toward the ridge.
A dark figure stood between two trees.
Then disappeared.
“Sniper!”” someone shouted.
Military police rushed toward the tree line.
Ethan grabbed my arm.
“Rachel.””
“What?””
“He wasn't shooting at us.””
I looked at him.
“He was shooting at the evidence.””
“What?””
Ethan pointed.
The metal box from the burned house had been left on the pavement.
A bullet had punched through it.
The documents inside were scattered.
One page fluttered toward the fire.
I ran.
“Rachel!”” Brooks shouted.
I grabbed the page before the flames reached it.
There was only one line.
A name.
A name that made me freeze.
*JASON TURNER — BIOLOGICAL FATHER*
I stared at it.
Ethan was behind me.
“No,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“Then why does this say Jason?””
His face changed.
May you like
And he said the words that shattered everything we'd believed.
“Because that document is the one Jason wanted you to find.””
