Chapter 3: The Secret in the Trust
I didn’t remember leaving the reception hall.
I only remembered the cold night air hitting my face.
One minute I was surrounded by flowers, music, and hundreds of people celebrating my marriage.
The next, I was standing outside in my wedding dress, holding my phone like it contained a bomb.
Ryan followed me.
“Clara.””
I turned around.
His expression broke my heart.
He looked terrified.
Not of the situation.
Of losing me.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
“For what?””
“For bringing this into our wedding.””
Ryan shook his head.
“Don’t apologize for someone else destroying the day.””
I looked back through the glass doors.
Inside, Mark was sitting alone.
Victor was standing beside him.
They looked like enemies.
But they also looked connected.
And I hated that.
Because I wanted a simple answer.
A good person.
A bad person.
A hero.
A villain.
But real life was never that easy.
Ryan touched my shoulder.
“Do you want to know the truth?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then let’s hear it from Mark.””
I almost said no.
Because I was afraid.
But fear had already controlled too much of my life.
I walked back inside.
Mark stood when he saw me.
His eyes were red.
“Clara…”
“Tell me everything.””
He looked at Victor.
Victor smiled.
“Finally.””
Mark ignored him.
“Your mother created a trust fund before she died.””
“How much?””
“Two million dollars.””
My chest tightened.
“And you controlled it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Mark looked down.
“Because your mother asked me to.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why would she ask you and not me?””
“Because you were sixteen when she died.””
The room went quiet.
I froze.
Sixteen.
I had forgotten.
I had been so focused on the fact that Mark wasn’t my blood that I forgot something important.
He was the one who was there when I lost my mother.
The one who had to make decisions when I couldn’t.
But there was still one question.
“Why hide it afterward?””
Mark looked at the floor.
“Because when you turned eighteen, Victor came back.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Victor’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Mark continued.
“He didn’t come back because he missed you.””
Victor scoffed.
“That’s a lie.””
Mark looked at him.
“You contacted Clara because you found out about the trust.””
Victor’s face went pale.
Just for a moment.
But I saw it.
And suddenly, everything made sense.
The expensive suit.
The sudden phone call.
The flowers.
The perfect timing.
“You knew about the money,” I whispered.
Victor stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
“Did you?””
Silence.
That was enough.
My hands curled into fists.
“All this time…”
Victor raised his voice.
“I am your father!””
“No.””
The word surprised even me.
I looked at him.
“You’re my biological father.””
His face hardened.
“That’s the same thing.””
“No.””
My voice grew stronger.
“It isn’t.””
Mark looked at me.
And for the first time that night, I saw something I had been too blind to see.
Hope.
Small.
Fragile.
But there.
Victor pointed at him.
“He manipulated you.””
I shook my head.
“Did he?””
I looked at Mark.
“Did you ever use my trust money?””
“No.””
“Not once?””
“No.””
“Then where did it go?””
Mark took a deep breath.
“Your college. Your medical expenses after you got sick at nineteen. The down payment on this house.””
I stared.
“What?””
He looked embarrassed.
“Your mother wanted your future protected. She wanted you to have opportunities.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His voice broke.
“Because I promised her.””
I felt tears filling my eyes.
“You promised my mother you would let me think you weren’t my father?””
Mark shook his head.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I promised her I would never make you feel like you owed me love because I raised you.””
That sentence destroyed me.
Because suddenly I remembered every birthday.
Every packed lunch.
Every late-night drive.
Every time Mark showed up without asking for anything.
Victor wanted payment for appearing.
Mark had spent a lifetime giving without expecting anything back.
Then Victor spoke.
Quietly.
Almost angrily.
“She never told you the biggest part.””
I turned.
“What?””
Victor looked at Mark.
“Tell her.””
Mark went still.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What?””
Mark didn’t answer.
Victor smiled.
“You should ask him why your mother never wanted you to know that I wasn’t the one who left.””
I stared at Mark.
My voice trembled.
“Mark?””
He closed his eyes.
And when he opened them again, there were tears.
“Clara…”
A long pause.
Then he whispered:
“Your biological father wasn’t the only person your mother kept a secret from you.””
My heart stopped.
“What secret?””
Mark looked at Victor.
Then back at me.
May you like
And said:
“Victor is not your biological father.””
