Chapter 13: The Daughter They Tried to Erase

I read the message three times.

Then a fourth.

*You were never supposed to exist.*

The words were simple.

But they carried the weight of every secret I had uncovered.

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t look angry.

He looked defeated.

Like those words had haunted him for decades.

“What does he mean?””

Daniel sat down slowly.

“Clara…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I’m done with half-truths.””

He closed his eyes.

“You deserve the whole story.””

“Yes.””

A long silence passed.

Then Daniel began.

“Before your mother met Victor, before she had you, her family was fighting over control of your grandfather’s company.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“But what you don’t know is that your grandfather had made a decision.””

“What decision?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He wanted your mother to inherit everything.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she was the only person he trusted.””

I thought about my mother.

Her kindness.

Her strength.

The way everyone underestimated her.

“And Robert?””

“Robert believed the company belonged to him.””

I nodded slowly.

“So he hated her.””

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“When your mother became pregnant with you, Robert saw an opportunity.””

My stomach tightened.

“What opportunity?””

“To remove her from the inheritance.””

The room felt colder.

“By making me disappear?””

Daniel nodded.

“Robert knew if your mother married me, she would be protected. She would have someone beside her.””

“So he created Victor.””

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“Created?””

Daniel looked down.

“Victor was not a random man who entered her life. Robert introduced them.””

I felt sick.

“He arranged my mother’s relationship?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor was easy to control.””

Everything suddenly made sense.

Victor’s confidence.

His entitlement.

The way he always acted like he deserved something.

He wasn’t just a selfish man.

He was someone who had been used as a weapon.

And then became one.

Daniel continued.

“Robert convinced your mother that I had abandoned her.””

I shook my head.

“She never believed that.””

“She did at first.””

My chest tightened.

“At first?””

Daniel nodded.

“But she found out the truth.””

“When?””

“After you were born.””

I looked at him.

“What happened then?””

“Your mother realized Victor knew nothing about being a father. He only cared about the arrangement.””

The word made me angry.

Arrangement.

My childhood had been someone else’s business deal.

“She left him.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“She tried to find me.””

My breath caught.

“But she couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because Robert had made sure I disappeared.””

I stared.

“How?””

“He accused me of stealing from the company.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He framed you.””

“Yes.””

“And nobody believed you?””

“No.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Because I knew what it felt like to be judged by a story someone else created.

My entire life.

I had believed my father abandoned me.

The truth was that he had been pushed away.

“Then why did my mother stay quiet?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because Robert threatened you.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

“He told her if she exposed him, he would make sure you lost everything.””

“The trust.””

“Yes.””

“And Victor?””

“Robert used him to maintain the illusion.””

I looked at the birth documents again.

The identity protection order.

The hidden name.

“The paperwork.””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother changed your legal identity because Robert was trying to locate you through company records.””

I swallowed.

“He was looking for me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Because as long as you existed, Robert could never fully control the company.””

The truth finally became clear.

I wasn’t a mistake.

I wasn’t a burden.

I wasn’t someone people had to hide because I was unwanted.

I was someone they had to hide because I mattered.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone turned.

Ryan immediately stood.

“I’ll check.””

But before he reached the door, it opened.

Mark walked in.

His face was pale.

“Clara.””

“What happened?””

He held up his phone.

“Robert is making his move.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“He filed legal papers.””

My heart dropped.

“For what?””

Mark looked at me.

“For control of the trust.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I finally understood him.

“He thinks he can still win.””

Mark shook his head.

“He has one advantage.””

“What?””

“He’s claiming your mother was mentally unstable when she created the documents.””

My blood boiled.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“He’s trying to destroy her reputation.””

Mark nodded.

“And if he succeeds, the trust becomes invalid.””

Daniel stood.

“We can’t let that happen.””

I looked at the three men in the room.

The men who had been part of my story from the beginning.

The man who raised me.

The man who gave me life.

The man who loved my mother.

For years, I thought my family was broken.

But standing there, I realized something.

The people who loved me had been fighting quietly the entire time.

Now it was my turn.

“Where is Robert?””

Mark looked surprised.

“Clara—”

“Where?””

Daniel answered.

“He has a hearing tomorrow.””

I nodded.

“Then I’ll see him there.””

Ryan stepped beside me.

“You’re sure?””

I looked at him.

For the first time in days, I was certain.

“Yes.””

May you like

Because I spent my entire life being protected.

Now I was going to protect the truth.
