Chapter 12: The Name I Was Never Given

I stayed frozen in the middle of the room.

The old house suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The walls.

The furniture.

The memories.

Everything that had once felt safe now felt like it was hiding something.

“Who are you?””

The man on the phone didn’t answer immediately.

That silence scared me.

“Please,” I said.

“Tell me.””

Finally, he spoke.

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

The name meant nothing.

But my mother’s journal did.

I grabbed it.

“Were you working with my mother?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I was her attorney.””

My heart slowed slightly.

An attorney.

Someone my mother trusted.

Someone who knew the truth.

“Why are you calling me now?””

“Because someone is looking for the journal.””

I looked around.

My grip tightened.

“Who?””

“Robert.””

My blood went cold.

“He knows I have it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Thomas sighed.

“Because Robert was never searching for the trust.””

I waited.

“He was searching for the evidence your mother left behind.””

I looked at the journal.

The pages suddenly felt dangerous.

“What evidence?””

“The evidence proving what he did.””

I closed my eyes.

My family was a maze.

Every answer led to another question.

“What did my uncle do?””

Thomas’s voice became quiet.

“He arranged your mother’s death.””

The words still hurt.

Even after everything.

Even after all the revelations.

Hearing them directly felt like being hit again.

“Do you have proof?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Hidden with the original trust documents.””

I looked at the papers from the bank.

“But I have them.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“You have copies.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The original documents were never placed in the bank.””

I looked at Mark.

He was watching my face.

“What is it?””

I covered the phone.

“The documents are fake.””

Mark went pale.

“What?””

I turned back.

“Thomas, where are the originals?””

A pause.

Then:

“With Daniel.””

My heart stopped.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“But he doesn’t have them.””

“He does.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I gave them to him.””

I felt dizzy.

The father I had just found.

The man who spent twenty-two years away from me.

He had been carrying the final piece of the truth.

I hung up.

Nobody spoke.

Then Mark said:

“We need to find Daniel.””

We found him at a small apartment on the edge of town.

Not a mansion.

Not a wealthy man hiding away.

Just a simple place.

The kind of place someone lived when they had spent their life running from the past.

When he opened the door and saw me, his face changed.

“Clara?””

I stepped inside.

“We need to talk.””

He nodded slowly.

“I knew this day would come.””

That sentence told me everything.

“You have the original trust documents.””

His eyes moved away.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother gave them to me.””

“Why would she trust you?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was your father.””

The words hurt differently now.

Because they were true.

But truth didn’t erase the years.

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

Daniel sat down.

“I tried.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

He took a deep breath.

“Because every time I tried, Robert stopped me.””

My hands tightened.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked broken.

“Robert convinced me that your mother wanted me gone.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know that now.””

He looked at the floor.

“But at the time, I was young. Angry. Hurt.””

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I hated myself for it.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because for the first time, someone wasn’t giving me an excuse.

They were admitting their failure.

Daniel stood and walked to a cabinet.

He removed a small metal box.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Letters.

Everything.

“I kept these because they were the only proof I had that your mother loved me.””

I opened one letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

*Daniel, if Clara ever finds you, tell her I never stopped loving you.*

My eyes filled.

“She loved you.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And she loved me.””

He cried quietly.

“Yes.””

For a moment, we just stood there.

Two people who had lost twenty-two years.

Then I saw something.

A document.

Different from the others.

I picked it up.

The title made my heart stop.

*Original Birth Record Amendment.*

My hands shook.

“Daniel…”

He looked at the paper.

Then looked away.

“What?””

His silence answered.

I opened it.

The original record.

The one hidden from everyone.

My name was there.

My mother’s name.

And my father’s name.

Daniel.

But underneath was another note.

A handwritten addition.

Something added years later.

*Identity protection order approved.*

I frowned.

“What does this mean?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“It means your identity was legally changed.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because someone was trying to erase who you were.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Robert.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You finally found the documents. Good. Now ask Daniel why he never told you that you were never supposed to exist.*

I stared at the screen.

Daniel saw the message.

May you like

And his face lost all color.

Because he knew exactly what Robert meant.
