Chapter 8: The Promise She Made
Malik didn't show anyone the picture immediately.
Not because he wanted to protect Yolanda.
Not because he trusted her.
Because he was afraid.
The picture changed everything.
Someone had been inside his room.
Someone had been watching.
He sat on his bed staring at the screen until his eyes hurt.
Then he walked downstairs.
Reggie was in the living room.
"Dad.""
One word.
And Reggie knew.
"What happened?""
Malik handed him the phone.
The color disappeared from Reggie's face.
"Where did you get this?""
"Text message.""
Reggie stood immediately.
"We're calling the police.""
Malik didn't argue.
This wasn't about money anymore.
This wasn't about a refund.
This was about someone entering his space and making sure he knew.
When the officer arrived, Malik sat at the kitchen table while Reggie explained everything.
The officer looked through the messages.
"Do you recognize the number?""
"No," Reggie said.
The officer looked at Yolanda.
"Do you?""
She was silent.
Then:
"Yes.""
Everyone turned.
"Who?""
She swallowed.
"Marcus.""
Reggie stared.
"You knew?""
"I suspected.""
"Suspected?""
His voice rose.
"You knew enough to lie.""
The officer held up a hand.
"Let's focus.""
He looked at Yolanda.
"Why would Marcus send this?""
Yolanda looked at the floor.
"Because I broke my promise.""
"What promise?""
She didn't answer.
The officer waited.
Finally, she whispered:
"I promised him money.""
Malik closed his eyes.
Of course.
Another promise.
Another secret.
Another thing happening around him.
"What money?""
Yolanda looked at him.
"Ten thousand dollars.""
The number felt impossible.
"Ten thousand?""
Reggie stepped back.
"When?""
"Years ago.""
"Why would you owe him ten thousand dollars?""
Yolanda's voice became quiet.
"Because he paid off my debt.""
The officer wrote something down.
"What debt?""
She hesitated.
Then said:
"The debt that started when I lost Elijah.""
Nobody spoke.
Yolanda explained.
After Elijah's father left, she had borrowed money from Marcus.
Not legally.
Not safely.
Marcus helped her pay rent.
Bills.
Medical costs.
Then he started demanding repayment.
When she couldn't pay, he threatened to tell Elijah that she chose money over him.
"So you married me while you were hiding this?"" Reggie asked.
Yolanda cried.
"I thought I could leave it behind.""
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
She looked at Malik.
"I didn't.""
The officer stood.
"Do you know where Marcus is now?""
"No.""
Then Malik's phone buzzed again.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
This time, no picture.
Just words.
*Ask her about the envelope.*
Malik felt cold.
The officer looked at him.
"What envelope?""
Malik looked at Yolanda.
She knew.
Immediately.
"You know what he's talking about.""
Yolanda covered her mouth.
"No.""
"What envelope?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
But she did.
Malik saw it.
The fear.
The guilt.
The recognition.
That night, Malik waited until everyone was asleep.
Then he searched the house.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he needed the truth.
He checked closets.
Drawers.
Old boxes.
Nothing.
Then he remembered something.
The day his refund envelope arrived.
Yolanda had been near the mail holder before he got home.
The same place where she kept old paperwork.
He opened the cabinet underneath.
Inside were cleaning supplies.
Old batteries.
Random receipts.
Then, behind a stack of towels, he found a small locked box.
His heart started racing.
He didn't have the key.
But the bottom of the box was loose.
Inside were papers.
Photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope.
Old.
Yellow.
With his name written across the front.
*Malik Carter.*
His hands shook.
He opened it.
Inside was not money.
It was a letter.
From someone he had never heard of.
The first line made him stop breathing.
*Dear Malik,*
*I don't know if your father ever told you about the night you were born.*
Malik looked at the signature.
The name at the bottom.
May you like
A name that belonged to someone who was supposed to be impossible.
His biological mother.
