Chapter 3: The Hidden Ledger

Malik read the note three times before he moved.

Ask your father.

Not ask Yolanda.

Not ask Tiana.

Ask your father.

The handwriting was neat and careful.

Too careful.

Like whoever wrote it wanted every letter to look calm.

But nothing about that morning felt calm.

Reggie was already outside washing his truck.

Malik walked through the back door holding the note.

"Dad.""

Reggie looked over.

"What happened?""

Malik held up the paper.

"Why did someone tell me to ask you?""

Reggie's face changed.

Just slightly.

But Malik saw it.

That was the worst part.

The answer was already there.

"You know what this is about.""

Reggie turned off the hose.

"Where did you get that?""

"My drawer.""

Reggie looked down.

Malik stepped closer.

"Someone went through my stuff.""

"I'll talk to Yolanda.""

"Stop saying that.""

Reggie froze.

Malik's voice shook.

"Every time something happens, you say you'll talk to her.""

The morning air was quiet.

"You talked.""

Reggie didn't answer.

"You knew.""

Finally, his father sat on the truck bumper.

"I knew she was struggling.""

"That's not an answer.""

"No.""

Reggie looked at the ground.

"It's not.""

Malik waited.

His father took a long breath.

"After your first paycheck, Yolanda asked if she could borrow some of it.""

"How much?""

"Fifty dollars.""

"And you said yes?""

"I thought she needed groceries.""

Malik laughed bitterly.

"So she kept doing it.""

Reggie didn't deny it.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought I could fix it.""

"You can't fix something by hiding it.""

Reggie nodded.

"I know.""

That was the first honest thing Malik had heard all week.

Inside the house, a cabinet slammed.

Yolanda.

She appeared at the back door.

"I guess we're all having this conversation now.""

Malik turned.

"Did you go through my drawer?""

She didn't answer immediately.

That told him enough.

"Yolanda.""

"I was looking for a receipt.""

"From my room?""

Her jaw tightened.

"I didn't steal from you.""

"You took my money.""

"I used it.""

"Without asking.""

She stepped onto the porch.

"You know what nobody talks about?""

Her voice rose.

"The electric bill. The groceries. The repairs. The things that don't magically get paid.""

Malik stared at her.

"You could have asked.""

"You think asking makes it different?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because then I would have a choice.""

That silenced her.

For the first time, Yolanda had no quick answer.

Tiana appeared behind the screen door.

"Mom.""

Yolanda looked back.

"What?""

Tiana swallowed.

"You also used his account.""

Malik turned.

"What?""

Yolanda's face changed.

"Tiana.""

"No.""

Tiana stepped outside.

"You need to tell him.""

Reggie stood.

"What account?""

Nobody spoke.

Malik felt his stomach drop.

"What account?""

Tiana looked at him.

"The savings account Dad opened when you were little.""

The world seemed to slow.

Malik looked at his father.

"What is she talking about?""

Reggie looked confused.

Then angry.

"Yolanda?""

She crossed her arms.

"It was just sitting there.""

"How much?""

Reggie's voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Yolanda looked away.

"How much?""

"A few hundred.""

Reggie stepped forward.

"How much?""

She didn't answer.

Malik looked between them.

He suddenly felt like he was standing in a house that belonged to strangers.

A house where everyone knew something except him.

Reggie grabbed his keys.

"We're going to the bank.""

Yolanda's expression changed.

"Reggie, don't make this bigger than it is.""

He looked at her.

"You used his refund.""

Silence.

"You used his paychecks.""

Silence.

"And now you're telling me you touched the account I made for him?""

His voice broke slightly.

"That is his future.""

Nobody spoke.

At the bank, Malik sat between his father and a stranger at a desk covered with paperwork.

The manager typed something into the computer.

Then stopped.

Her eyes moved to the screen.

"I'm sorry.""

Reggie leaned forward.

"What?""

The manager looked at Malik.

"There is something unusual here.""

Malik felt his heartbeat quicken.

"What?""

The woman turned the monitor slightly.

"There was a withdrawal.""

"When?""

"Three days before your tax refund check was cashed.""

Reggie's face went pale.

"Who authorized it?""

The manager looked back at the screen.

Then she said the one sentence Malik never expected to hear.

"The withdrawal was approved using your father's signature.""

Malik slowly turned toward Reggie.

His father looked just as shocked as he was.

Then the manager printed another page.

She placed it on the desk.

"And there's one more thing.""

She pointed to the bottom of the form.

"The person who brought in this paperwork wasn't your wife.""

Malik looked at the signature line.

A name was written there.

A name that made his entire body go cold.

Because it wasn't Yolanda's.

May you like

It wasn't Reggie's.

It was someone Malik knew.
