Chapter 5: The Paper Trail
Malik didn't tell anyone about the note that night.
Not immediately.
He sat on his bed with the paper in his hands, staring at the words over and over.
*Need Malik's original documents.*
His birth certificate.
His Social Security card.
His identification.
Things adults told kids to keep safe.
Things Malik had never thought someone in his own house would search for.
He placed the paper inside his backpack.
Then he locked the zipper.
It was the first time in his life he had hidden something from his family.
And that hurt more than he expected.
The next morning, Reggie knocked on his door.
"Can I come in?""
Malik looked at the backpack beside him.
"Yeah.""
His father entered slowly.
He looked tired.
Older.
"I talked to the bank.""
Malik nodded.
"What did they say?""
"They're opening an investigation.""
"And?""
Reggie sat down.
"They said the signature issue is serious.""
Malik looked away.
"Because someone stole from me.""
Reggie didn't argue.
"Yes.""
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Malik pulled the paper from his backpack.
"I found this.""
Reggie's face changed as he read it.
The longer he looked, the worse he seemed to feel.
"Where did you get this?""
"Behind my dresser.""
Reggie stood up.
"Malik, did anyone have access to your room?""
The question was almost impossible to answer.
Everyone did.
That was the problem.
"I don't know.""
Reggie folded the paper carefully.
"We need to find out.""
That afternoon, they sat at the dining table with every document Malik owned spread out.
Birth certificate.
Tax forms.
Pay stubs.
Bank statements.
Everything.
It felt less like organizing paperwork and more like investigating a crime.
Then Reggie noticed something.
"Wait.""
He picked up a bank statement.
"What?""
"This.""
He pointed.
"Your account information was printed on this statement.""
Malik looked closer.
"When did this come?""
"Last month.""
Reggie frowned.
"Who opened the mail?""
Nobody answered.
The answer was obvious.
Yolanda.
Later that evening, Yolanda came home from work and found them sitting at the table.
She stopped.
"What is this?""
Reggie looked at her.
"The truth.""
Her expression hardened.
"Really?""
Malik watched her.
He expected anger.
Instead, he saw fear.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But there.
"Why were you looking for my documents?"" Malik asked.
Yolanda froze.
"What?""
"My documents.""
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Reggie placed the note on the table.
She stared at it.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she sat down.
The fight seemed to leave her body.
"I wasn't trying to hurt him.""
Malik felt his chest tighten.
"Then what were you trying to do?""
Yolanda looked at Reggie.
"I was trying to fix a problem.""
"What problem?"" Reggie asked.
She hesitated.
Then she reached into her purse.
She pulled out a folder.
Not a small folder.
A thick one.
She placed it on the table.
Malik looked at it.
"What is that?""
Yolanda opened it.
Bills.
Late notices.
Medical payments.
Credit card statements.
The papers spread across the table.
"I didn't tell you everything.""
Reggie stared.
"You hid this from me?""
"I didn't want you to worry.""
"I was already worried.""
Yolanda's eyes filled.
"I thought I could solve it.""
Malik looked at the bills.
For a moment, he felt something complicated.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
Then he noticed something.
A bill date.
A payment amount.
Something didn't match.
"Wait.""
Everyone looked at him.
"This bill.""
He pointed.
"This one says April.""
Yolanda nodded.
"Yes.""
"But this charge happened before we moved here.""
Her face changed.
Malik picked up another paper.
"And this one is from an account Dad doesn't know about.""
Reggie took it.
His expression changed.
"What is this?""
Yolanda looked away.
The room became silent.
Because the story was changing.
This wasn't just about a struggling household.
There was something else.
Something hidden.
Reggie stood.
"Yolanda.""
She didn't answer.
"Whose account is this?""
Finally, she whispered:
"My sister's.""
Malik frowned.
"What does your sister have to do with my money?""
Yolanda closed her eyes.
"Nothing.""
But nobody believed her.
Reggie looked at the paperwork.
"You used Malik's refund to pay someone else's debt?""
"No.""
"Then why?""
Yolanda's voice broke.
"Because she threatened me.""
Silence.
Malik stared.
"Who?""
Yolanda looked toward the hallway.
Then at the front door.
Like she was afraid someone might be standing outside.
"Her husband.""
Reggie frowned.
"Why would your sister's husband threaten you?""
Yolanda didn't answer.
Then her phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
She grabbed it quickly.
Too quickly.
Reggie saw the screen.
"Who is that?""
Yolanda turned the phone away.
But it was too late.
Malik saw the message preview.
One sentence.
One name.
*Tell Malik the truth before I do.*
The phone slipped from Yolanda's hand.

And for the first time, Malik realized something terrifying.
His stepmom wasn't the only person hiding something.
