Chapter 9: The Daughter Hidden From The World

The words refused to leave my mind.

*Your father didn't have one heir.*

*He had two.*

The apartment was silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

The kind of silence that came after something shattered.

Griffin stared at Daniel.

His face had gone completely still.

And I knew that expression.

It was the same one he wore when he was trying to understand something impossible.

When emotions became too overwhelming, Griffin turned into a machine.

Facts.

Evidence.

Logic.

Anything to avoid feeling.

"Who?"" he asked.

Daniel looked down.

"Griffin...""

"Who is the second heir?""

His voice wasn't angry.

That was worse.

It was the voice of someone afraid of the answer.

Daniel glanced toward Sophia.

She looked away.

And that told me everything.

She knew.

"You knew about this," Griffin said.

Sophia didn't respond.

"Didn't you?""

Her silence became an answer.

Griffin took a step toward her.

"You knew my entire life was built on missing information.""

Sophia finally looked at him.

"Your father wasn't the man you thought he was.""

"Don't change the subject.""

"I'm not.""

Her voice softened.

"Your father had secrets.""

Griffin laughed once.

A painful sound.

"Apparently everyone in my life did.""

I felt those words.

Because they included me.

Even though my secrets had been meant to protect him.

"Tell me," he said.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

"Her name is Evelyn.""

Griffin froze.

"Evelyn who?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Evelyn Ashworth.""

The room went completely still.

Because the name meant something.

I saw it in Griffin's face.

A memory.

A fragment.

"Impossible.""

Daniel shook his head.

"It's true.""

"My father only had one child.""

"That's what everyone believed.""

Griffin looked at the letter again.

Then the photograph.

Then Daniel.

"When?""

Daniel sighed.

"Before your father married your mother.""

Griffin said nothing.

"Your father had a daughter.""

A pause.

"She was hidden because of a scandal.""

"What scandal?""

Daniel hesitated.

"The kind that could destroy a family name.""

I looked at Griffin.

He was trying to stay composed.

But his hands were shaking.

"What does she have to do with Marcus?""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Everything.""

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone turned.

The security system panel near the door flashed red.

Daniel's face changed.

"He's inside the building.""

Griffin immediately moved.

"How long?""

"Minutes.""

I grabbed Leo's hand.

"We need to leave.""

For once, nobody argued.

Not Griffin.

Not Daniel.

Not even Sophia.

We moved quickly through the apartment.

But before we reached the hallway, Sophia stopped.

"I know where he is.""

Everyone turned.

Griffin stared at her.

"Why would we believe you?""

"Because Marcus is going to kill all of us.""

The confidence was gone.

The woman who had controlled everything for five years was finally afraid.

"What happened?"" Daniel asked.

Sophia looked at him.

"He betrayed me.""

I almost laughed.

"You sound surprised.""

Her eyes flashed.

"I was useful until I wasn't.""

Griffin looked at her coldly.

"Where is he?""

Sophia hesitated.

Then said:

"The old Ashworth archives.""

Daniel frowned.

"The underground facility?""

Griffin looked at him.

"You know about that?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your father kept records there.""

My heart sank.

"Records of what?""

Daniel looked at Griffin.

"Everything.""

We moved through the private elevator.

Leo held my hand tightly.

Griffin stayed beside us.

Not ahead.

Beside us.

A small thing.

But I noticed.

Five years ago, he would have walked first.

He would have assumed he had to protect everyone alone.

Now he understood something.

Protection wasn't control.

It was partnership.

The elevator descended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Leo looked up.

"Mr. Griffin?""

Griffin looked down.

"Yes?""

"Are you my dad?""

The question stopped everyone.

Including me.

Griffin looked at him.

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

Then he crouched.

So they were at the same height.

"Yes.""

Leo studied him.

"Why didn't you come before?""

The question was simple.

The answer wasn't.

Griffin swallowed.

"Because I didn't know.""

Leo looked confused.

"Didn't Mommy tell you?""

I closed my eyes.

Because there it was.

The truth of five years.

Griffin looked at me.

Then back at Leo.

"She tried.""

Leo looked between us.

"Then why were you gone?""

The elevator reached the bottom floor.

The doors opened.

But nobody moved.

Because Griffin had to answer.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as a businessman.

As a father.

"I made a mistake.""

Leo waited.

"I believed something without knowing the whole truth.""

A pause.

"And I hurt your mom.""

Leo looked at me.

Then back at him.

"Are you sorry?""

Griffin's eyes became wet.

A sight I never thought I would see.

"Every day.""

Leo thought about it.

Then he nodded.

"Okay.""

Griffin looked surprised.

"Okay?""

"You said sorry.""

The innocence of it almost broke me.

Children didn't need perfect explanations.

They needed honesty.

We reached the archive entrance.

The old underground facility was exactly as Daniel described.

Hidden beneath the original Ashworth headquarters.

Cold.

Silent.

Filled with locked rooms.

Griffin used an access card.

The door opened.

Inside were thousands of files.

Documents.

Photographs.

Records.

A lifetime of secrets.

Daniel moved toward a computer terminal.

"He kept everything.""

Griffin walked through the room slowly.

Then stopped.

A file was sitting on the desk.

His name on it.

He opened it.

I watched his expression change.

"What is it?""

He didn't answer.

I walked closer.

The document was old.

A birth record.

Not Leo's.

Not Evelyn's.

Griffin's.

But there was something strange.

A note attached.

*Genetic verification pending.*

Daniel looked over.

"No.""

Griffin turned.

"What?""

Daniel stepped closer.

His face was pale.

"Your father wasn't your biological father.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Griffin.

He looked like the ground had disappeared beneath him.

"What did you say?""

Daniel swallowed.

"The reason Marcus wanted Leo erased...""

A pause.

"Was because Leo wasn't just proof of your inheritance.""

He pointed to the file.

"He was proof that Griffin Ashworth carried the true Ashworth bloodline.""

Griffin stared.

"But if I'm not...""

Daniel shook his head.

"You are.""

Confusion crossed his face.

"Then what does this mean?""

Daniel looked toward the final document.

"The man you called your father knew.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"He knew?""

Daniel nodded.

"He adopted you.""

Nobody spoke.

Griffin stepped back.

"No.""

"He loved you.""

Daniel's voice softened.

"But he knew the truth.""

The pieces started falling into place.

The hidden heir.

The trust.

The obsession with bloodline.

The reason Marcus wanted Leo gone.

Because Griffin's existence itself challenged the entire structure of Ashworth Global.

Then the archive computer suddenly turned on.

Everyone froze.

A video began playing automatically.

A man appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Griffin's father.

His voice filled the room.

"If you are watching this, then someone has already tried to take the Ashworth legacy from you.""

Griffin moved closer.

His father's recorded eyes looked directly at him.

"I need you to know something.""

A pause.

"You were never my mistake.""

Griffin stopped breathing.

"You were my son because I chose you.""

I felt Griffin's face change.

The pain.

The relief.

The grief.

All at once.

The recording continued.

"But there is one thing you must discover.""

The screen flickered.

A final file appeared.

*IDENTITY OF SECOND HEIR: CONFIRMED*

Griffin stared.

Daniel whispered:

"No.""

The file opened.

A photograph appeared.

A woman.

A familiar face.

A face we had all seen before.

Sophia.

My blood ran cold.

Griffin looked at her.

"You.""

Sophia stepped back.

For the first time...

She looked truly afraid.

Because the truth was finally visible.

The second heir wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't someone hidden away.

May you like

It was the woman who had spent five years destroying our family.

And she had done it because she believed the empire belonged to her.
