Chapter 10: The Family We Chose

Sophia didn't move.

For the first time since I had met her, there was no carefully prepared expression on her face.

No smile.

No confidence.

No performance.

Just fear.

The computer screen illuminated her face.

Her own photograph stared back at all of us.

*SECOND HEIR: SOPHIA VALE ASHWORTH*

The name looked impossible.

Yet somehow, it explained everything.

Griffin stared at the screen.

Then at Sophia.

"Your name isn't Vale.""

Sophia said nothing.

"Is it?""

Slowly, she shook her head.

"No.""

The answer was barely audible.

"My mother's name was Ashworth.""

Daniel looked at the documents.

"Your father?""

Sophia laughed softly.

A broken sound.

"My father never wanted anyone to know I existed.""

Griffin's expression changed.

"Why?""

Her eyes moved toward him.

"Because your father chose him.""

Silence.

I felt the tension shift.

This wasn't the confident woman who manipulated everyone from the shadows.

This was someone finally standing in front of the truth she had spent her entire life running from.

"My mother was pregnant before your father married," Sophia said.

Griffin listened.

"He promised her he would take care of us.""

A bitter smile appeared.

"But then he met your mother.""

She looked at Griffin.

"And everything changed.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"So your father abandoned her?""

Sophia's face hardened.

"He erased her.""

The room went quiet.

For a moment, I saw something human in her.

Pain.

A wound that had existed long before she hurt anyone else.

But pain didn't excuse what she did.

It explained.

It didn't justify.

"You wanted revenge," Griffin said.

Sophia looked at him.

"I wanted what was mine.""

"No.""

His voice was calm.

"You wanted what you believed you deserved.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Isn't that the same thing?""

"No.""

Griffin looked at the screen.

"Because people don't become family because of documents.""

That sentence surprised me.

Because five years ago, Griffin would have believed the opposite.

Blood.

Legacy.

Names.

Those things had mattered to him.

Now they didn't.

Not the same way.

Sophia looked toward Leo.

"And yet he is the reason you keep everything.""

Griffin immediately stepped between them.

"Don't look at him.""

The warning in his voice was unmistakable.

Sophia smiled sadly.

"There it is.""

"What?""

"The thing I could never understand.""

She looked at me.

"You.""

I frowned.

"What about me?""

"You lost everything.""

Her voice softened.

"And somehow you still had what I wanted.""

I didn't answer.

Because I knew what she meant.

Not money.

Not power.

Not a company.

Love.

A family.

A child who looked at me like I was his entire world.

Sophia looked back at Griffin.

"I spent my whole life believing if I had your name, people would finally respect me.""

She laughed quietly.

"But then I watched you throw away the only person who actually loved you.""

The words hit him.

Because they were cruel.

And because they were partly true.

Griffin looked down.

"I know.""

Everyone became silent.

Sophia blinked.

"What?""

"I know.""

His voice was steady.

"I destroyed something I should have protected.""

For once, Sophia had no response.

Because she expected excuses.

Not accountability.

Griffin continued.

"But what happened to you doesn't give you the right to destroy my son.""

Her face hardened.

"He was the only thing standing between me and the company.""

"No.""

Griffin shook his head.

"He was a child.""

The simple truth cut through everything.

Sophia looked away.

Daniel moved toward the computer.

"There is more.""

Everyone looked at him.

He opened another file.

"This isn't just about inheritance.""

Griffin frowned.

"What else?""

Daniel brought up financial records.

"Marcus wasn't working for Sophia.""

The room went still.

Sophia looked confused.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel looked at her.

"Your entire plan was being used.""

Her expression changed.

"No.""

"Marcus never intended to give you control.""

Daniel clicked another file.

"He was transferring Ashworth assets into a private company.""

Griffin leaned closer.

"Whose company?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then opened the document.

The name appeared.

I saw Griffin's face change.

"Impossible.""

I looked at the screen.

A name.

A person.

Someone none of us expected.

"Who is it?"" I asked.

Griffin didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"Your uncle.""

The room went silent.

Another piece.

Another secret.

Another person hiding behind the curtain.

But Griffin closed the file.

"No.""

Everyone looked at him.

"What?""

He took a deep breath.

"No more.""

His voice carried through the archive.

"No more secrets controlling us.""

He looked at Daniel.

"We have enough evidence.""

Then he looked at Sophia.

"And we have enough truth.""

Sophia stared at him.

"What are you going to do?""

Five years ago, I knew the answer Griffin would have given.

Revenge.

A battle.

A complete destruction of anyone who hurt him.

But the man standing in front of me now was different.

"I am going to protect my family.""

Sophia looked at me.

Then Leo.

And finally Griffin.

She understood.

She had lost.

Not because she lost the company.

Because she had spent years trying to take something she never understood.

A family wasn't built by ownership.

It was built by choice.

Three months later, Meridian City knew the truth.

The documents were released.

The investigation began.

Marcus Hale was arrested after attempting to leave the country.

The financial crimes connected to Ashworth Global were uncovered.

Sophia cooperated with investigators after realizing Marcus had manipulated her too.

She still had consequences to face.

A lifetime of choices didn't disappear because someone finally admitted their pain.

But for the first time, she stopped running from the truth.

And Griffin?

Griffin stepped away from the company temporarily.

That shocked everyone.

The billionaire who built an empire choosing distance from it.

When reporters asked why, his answer was simple.

"I spent years protecting a company while losing sight of the people who mattered.""

Then he walked away.

Not forever.

Just long enough to rebuild.

Not the empire.

The family.

Six months later, I stood outside Leo's school.

The sun was warm.

Children ran across the playground.

Parents waited by the gate.

Normal moments.

The moments I once feared we would never have.

"Mommy!""

Leo ran toward me.

I smiled.

"How was school?""

"Good.""

Then he looked behind me.

His face lit up.

"He's here.""

I turned.

Griffin stood near the entrance.

No suit.

No cameras.

No assistants.

Just Griffin.

Holding a small paper bag.

Leo ran toward him.

"Did you bring it?""

Griffin laughed.

"Maybe.""

"You promised.""

"I said maybe.""

Leo crossed his arms.

"You always negotiate.""

I couldn't help smiling.

Because that was true.

Some things never changed.

Griffin looked at me.

And for a moment, neither of us spoke.

The past was still there.

You couldn't erase five years.

You couldn't pretend wounds never happened.

But healing wasn't pretending.

It was choosing what came next.

"You look happy," he said.

I smiled.

"I am.""

He nodded.

Then quietly:

"Thank you.""

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For giving me a chance to know him.""

My eyes moved to Leo.

"I didn't give you anything.""

Griffin looked confused.

"I gave Leo the truth.""

I paused.

"And he decided what to do with it.""

Griffin smiled.

A real smile.

The kind I hadn't seen in years.

"He's incredible.""

"Yes.""

"He gets that from you.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"Only me?""

He laughed.

"Mostly you.""

Leo ran back.

"Can we get ice cream?""

I looked at Griffin.

He looked at me.

A silent question.

Not an assumption.

Not an order.

A question.

I nodded.

"Yes.""

And the three of us walked down the street together.

Not because the past had disappeared.

Not because everything was suddenly perfect.

But because after all the lies, all the secrets, and all the years we lost...

We finally chose the truth.

May you like

And sometimes, the greatest revenge against the people who tried to destroy you...

Is building a life they can never take away. :::
