Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn't His

The envelope sat on the table between us.

A thin piece of paper.

A few printed words.

A signature.

Yet somehow, it carried the weight of five years of pain.

I stared at Griffin's name written across the bottom.

His signature.

His handwriting.

His approval.

At least, that's what it looked like.

Leo pressed against my side, sensing the tension in the room.

Children always knew when adults were afraid.

Even when adults pretended not to be.

Griffin reached for the envelope.

But before his fingers touched it, I grabbed his wrist.

"Wait.""

He looked at me.

"Vivienne.""

"Don't.""

His eyebrows pulled together.

"What?""

"Don't touch anything.""

Sophia smiled.

"Still careful. I always admired that about you.""

I looked at her.

"Don't pretend you admire anything about me.""

Her smile faded slightly.

Good.

For the first time, I wanted her to feel something.

Not guilt.

People like Sophia rarely felt guilt.

But discomfort.

Fear.

The realization that she was no longer controlling the room.

Griffin looked between us.

"What is in that envelope?""

Sophia walked around the table slowly.

"Something you should have seen five years ago.""

"Answer the question.""

She stopped.

"A consent form.""

My stomach dropped.

"Consent for what?""

Sophia looked at Leo.

Then back at us.

"For a medical procedure.""

The air disappeared from my lungs.

Griffin's expression changed instantly.

"What procedure?""

Sophia didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Because I already knew.

And the memory came rushing back.

The hospital.

The storm.

The nurse who looked uncomfortable.

The doctor who avoided my eyes.

The paperwork that appeared when I was exhausted, terrified, and alone.

A paper I refused to sign.

A paper someone signed anyway.

"No," I whispered.

Griffin looked at me.

"What?""

I couldn't move.

"I remember.""

Sophia smiled.

"Of course you do.""

I turned toward her.

"What did you do?""

Her face remained calm.

"I didn't do anything.""

"You were there.""

"Yes.""

My voice shook.

"You were at the hospital.""

Sophia tilted her head.

"I was helping.""

The word made me sick.

"Helping?""

I stepped forward.

"You came into my hospital room when I was in labor.""

"Yes.""

"You told me Griffin was never coming.""

Sophia's eyes flickered.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

"You told me he had chosen his company over me.""

Silence.

Griffin looked at Sophia.

"What?""

She ignored him.

"You were emotional.""

"I was alone.""

"You were vulnerable.""

"You made sure I stayed that way.""

The room went quiet.

Leo shifted beside me.

I immediately lowered my voice.

I couldn't let him see this.

Not him.

Never him.

Griffin noticed.

He looked at Leo.

Then at Sophia.

"What did you do?""

Sophia sighed.

"You always were dramatic.""

His expression became terrifyingly calm.

"Try again.""

For the first time, Sophia looked uncertain.

Because she knew that tone.

The same tone everyone feared in business meetings.

The tone Griffin used when someone crossed a line.

"What happened that night?"" he asked.

Sophia looked at the document.

"You were supposed to lose everything.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

"It means you and Vivienne were too powerful together.""

Her eyes moved toward Griffin.

"You had the company. She had the technology. Together, you controlled the future of renewable infrastructure.""

Griffin stared at her.

"So you wanted my company.""

"I wanted what you built.""

"And Leo?""

A pause.

Then Sophia said:

"Leo was an accident.""

The words hit me like a slap.

Griffin moved before I did.

He stepped toward her.

"Don't.""

His voice was low.

"Do not talk about my son like that.""

Sophia looked almost amused.

"Now he's your son.""

The room went silent.

Because those words revealed everything.

The cruelty.

The jealousy.

The obsession.

Sophia hadn't just wanted Griffin's company.

She wanted his life.

She wanted the place I had occupied.

She wanted the family she couldn't create.

Griffin picked up the envelope.

This time, I didn't stop him.

He opened it carefully.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then his face changed.

"No.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He handed me the paper.

I read it.

My blood ran cold.

It wasn't a consent form for Leo.

It was an authorization request.

For genetic testing.

A paternity test.

The date.

The hospital.

My name.

And underneath...

A forged signature.

Griffin Ashworth.

"They wanted to prove he wasn't mine.""

His voice was broken.

Sophia crossed her arms.

"You were suspicious.""

Griffin looked at her.

"I was?""

She shrugged.

"You believed Vivienne cheated.""

My chest tightened.

"So you created more doubt.""

"Yes.""

The honesty was horrifying.

"I knew you would never forgive her if you believed she had another man's child.""

Griffin looked like he couldn't breathe.

Because she was right.

Five years ago, his pain had made him vulnerable.

She had simply used it.

"I wanted you angry," Sophia continued.

"I wanted you separated.""

Her eyes moved to me.

"And I wanted her to disappear.""

Griffin's voice was quiet.

"You tried to take my family.""

Sophia smiled.

"No.""

She shook her head.

"I tried to give you a better one.""

The insanity of it made me speechless.

Griffin stared at her.

"You don't hear yourself.""

"I hear perfectly.""

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"You don't understand love.""

Sophia's expression hardened.

"Don't talk to me about love.""

The sudden anger in her voice shocked everyone.

Even her.

"You had everything.""

Her voice rose.

"You had the man everyone wanted. The money. The power. The future.""

She looked at me.

"And you treated it like it was guaranteed.""

I stared at her.

"You didn't want him to love you.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"You wanted to own him.""

That hit something.

A nerve.

For a moment, Sophia said nothing.

Then she laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

"You think you're better than me?""

"No.""

I looked at Griffin.

"I think I know the difference between love and possession.""

Before Sophia could respond, Griffin's phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A voice came through.

Weak.

Distorted.

But familiar.

Daniel.

"Griffin.""

His face changed.

"Daniel?""

Sophia's expression finally broke.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Daniel continued.

"Don't trust anything she says.""

Sophia stepped forward.

"Give me that phone.""

Griffin moved away.

"Where are you?""

Daniel coughed.

"Not important.""

"Tell me where you are.""

A pause.

Then:

"I found the original files.""

My heart raced.

"What files?""

Daniel's voice became urgent.

"The ones proving Marcus and Sophia planned everything.""

Griffin looked at Sophia.

She was no longer smiling.

"What else?"" he asked.

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The divorce.""

Silence.

"The messages.""

Another pause.

"The hospital.""

My blood turned cold.

"What about the hospital?""

Daniel's voice shook.

"Vivienne was never the target.""

I looked at Griffin.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel answered.

"It means the person they wanted to destroy...""

A pause.

Then:

"Was Griffin.""

The room went completely still.

Sophia's face went pale.

Griffin stared at the phone.

"Daniel, explain.""

But there was no answer.

The call had ended.

Then Griffin's phone received one final file.

A video.

Recorded five years ago.

The title appeared:

*ASHWORTH PENTHOUSE — NIGHT OF DIVORCE*

Griffin looked at me.

I looked at him.

Neither of us wanted to press play.

Because we both knew.

Whatever was on that recording...

Would reveal the final piece of the lie.

Griffin slowly touched the screen.

The video began.

And the first thing we heard was Sophia's voice.

"Once Vivienne is gone, he'll have nobody left to trust.""

My heart stopped.

Then another voice answered.

A man's voice.

A voice Griffin recognized immediately.

Marcus.

"You'll have your empire.""

Sophia smiled in the recording.

"And you'll have your money.""

The video continued.

Then Marcus said the words that made Griffin step backward.

"The only problem is the child.""

The room went silent.

Because on the screen, five years younger and unaware of the truth...

Sophia and Marcus were discussing Leo.

And their next plan.

May you like

The plan they never expected us to discover.

*"Make sure the baby never carries the Ashworth name.""*
