Chapter 4: The Secret Buried Under His Empire
I read the message three times.
Not because I didn't understand the words.
Because my mind refused to accept them.
*The boy was never supposed to survive.*
The airport noise disappeared.
The announcements overhead.
The rolling suitcases.
The conversations around us.
Everything faded into the background.
There was only one thought screaming inside my head.
Leo.
My son.
My entire world.
I looked around immediately.
He was standing beside me, holding his small backpack, completely unaware.
He was humming a song from the movie he had watched on the plane.
Six years old.
Six years of laughter.
Six years of scraped knees, bedtime stories, and tiny hands reaching for mine when he was scared.
Someone had wanted that gone.
Someone had looked at my child and decided he was a problem to eliminate.
"Vivienne.""
Griffin's voice pulled me back.
His face had changed.
The arrogance was gone.
The billionaire image was gone.
There was only a father staring at a threat against his son.
"Take Leo and go," he said.
I looked at him.
"What?""
"Get him somewhere safe.""
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it sounded exactly like the Griffin I remembered.
Always taking control.
Always giving orders.
"You don't get to tell me what to do.""
His expression tightened.
"This isn't about us.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"It stopped being about us five years ago.""
He looked at Leo.
Then back at me.
"I know.""
Those two words surprised me.
Because Griffin Ashworth didn't say them easily.
Not when he was wrong.
Not when he was afraid.
"I know," he repeated.
"And I know I have no right to ask anything from you.""
The honesty caught me off guard.
"But please," he continued, lowering his voice, "don't put him in danger because you're angry at me.""
My jaw tightened.
"Do you really think that's what this is?""
"No.""
His answer came immediately.
"I think you're terrified.""
That silenced me.
Because he was right.
I wasn't angry.
Not anymore.
Anger was easier.
Anger had kept me standing for five years.
Fear was different.
Fear made me remember every night I checked the locks three times.
Every unknown car parked outside my apartment.
Every phone call that ended before I could answer.
Every time I wondered whether the people who destroyed my marriage would eventually come for my son.
Griffin noticed my silence.
"You knew this was possible.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"You knew someone might try to hurt him.""
I didn't answer.
That was enough.
His face changed.
"Vivienne.""
I looked away.
"I didn't know.""
"But you suspected.""
I swallowed.
"After Daniel disappeared, I learned something.""
"What?""
"People who are willing to destroy one life don't usually stop there.""
The words hung between us.
Griffin looked at Leo.
Then his eyes hardened.
"Where is Marcus?""
"I don't know.""
"You said he sent the message.""
"He did.""
"Then why isn't he here?""
Because I had asked myself the same question.
The answer terrified me.
"Because Marcus doesn't do anything without a reason.""
Griffin's phone rang.
The name on the screen made both of us freeze.
Marcus Hale.
For a moment, Griffin just stared.
Then he answered.
"Marcus.""
The voice on the other end was calm.
Too calm.
I couldn't hear everything, but I watched Griffin's expression.
"Where are you?""
A pause.
"No, don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.""
Another pause.
Then Griffin's face went pale.
He looked at me.
"Five years ago, you told me Vivienne betrayed me.""
I felt my heart stop.
Because this was the conversation I had wanted for half a decade.
The one where the truth finally reached the person who refused to hear it.
Griffin listened.
Then his voice became colder.
"You were the one who gave me those messages.""
Silence.
His hand tightened around the phone.
"Why?""
Another pause.
Then Griffin laughed once.
A horrible, broken sound.
"You're telling me you did it for the company?""
I stepped closer.
Trying to hear.
But Griffin turned slightly away.
"No.""
His voice was firm.
"You don't get to say you protected me.""
Another pause.
"You destroyed my marriage.""
His eyes met mine.
"You destroyed my family.""
The airport suddenly felt colder.
Then Griffin's expression shifted.
Fear.
Again.
"What do you mean he's alive?""
My stomach dropped.
Griffin looked at me.
I knew immediately.
This wasn't about Marcus.
This was about someone else.
Someone we thought was gone.
"Who is alive?"" I whispered.
Griffin didn't answer.
He listened for another few seconds.
Then the call ended.
"Griffin.""
He looked at me.
"Daniel.""
My breath caught.
"No.""
"He survived.""
I stared at him.
Daniel Reeves.
The man everyone believed disappeared five years ago.
The man who was supposed to be the center of the scandal that destroyed my marriage.
The man who knew the truth.
"Where is he?""
Griffin shook his head.
"Marcus didn't say.""
"Then why did he tell you?""
"Because he wanted me to know.""
"Why?""
Griffin looked at his phone.
A new message had appeared.
This time, it wasn't from Marcus.
It was from Daniel.
My hands went cold.
"Read it.""
Griffin hesitated.
Then he opened the message.
There was only one line.
*Ask Griffin why he believed the wrong person. Then ask him who benefited from our divorce.*
I stared at the screen.
A thousand memories collided.
The divorce.
The rumors.
The company.
The missing evidence.
The years I spent raising Leo alone.
Someone had been moving pieces around a board.
And Griffin and I had both been playing exactly the roles they wanted.
A security guard walked past us.
A family laughed nearby.
The ordinary world continued.
But ours had changed.
"Vivienne.""
I looked at Griffin.
"I need to tell you something.""
The way he said it frightened me.
Because Griffin Ashworth always sounded certain.
Now he sounded like someone preparing to confess.
"What?""
He looked down.
"After our divorce...""
He stopped.
Then tried again.
"After I thought you betrayed me, I made a decision.""
My chest tightened.
"What decision?""
"I changed the company structure.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with anything?""
"Everything.""
He looked at Leo.
"Because when I believed you were trying to destroy me, I removed every person connected to you from Ashworth Global.""
My heart sank.
"Daniel.""
"Yes.""
"And?""
Griffin's voice dropped.
"And I gave Marcus complete control over internal investigations.""
The world seemed to tilt.
"Griffin.""
"I didn't know.""
I stared at him.
"You handed him access to everything.""
He nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
The realization hit him as hard as it hit me.
Marcus hadn't just manipulated a divorce.
He had gained control of the empire.
The empire Griffin built.
The empire I helped create.
A company worth billions.
A company now controlled from inside by the person who destroyed us.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
A message.
My fingers froze before opening it.
Griffin noticed.
"What is it?""
I turned the screen toward him.
It was a photograph.
Not from today.
Not from the airport.
A photograph from five years ago.
The night Leo was born.
I was standing outside the hospital.
Holding a newborn baby.
Crying.
And beside me...
Was Griffin.
Except he wasn't there.
The photograph had been edited.
Someone had added him into the picture.
But underneath it was a message.
*You both lost five years because you believed a lie. Now find the person who wrote it.*
I looked at Griffin.
He looked at me.
And for the first time since our divorce...
We were standing on the same side.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
A name I hadn't seen in five years.
Daniel Reeves.
I answered.
"Hello?""
There was silence.
Then a weak, trembling voice spoke.
"Vivienne...""
I couldn't breathe.
"Daniel?""
A pause.
Then:
"I'm sorry.""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"For what?""
His voice broke.
"For not getting to you sooner.""
I felt Griffin move closer.
"What happened?"" I asked.
Daniel took a shaky breath.
"Because the person who planned all of this...""
Another pause.
A sound in the background.
Like someone else was there.
Then Daniel whispered:
"She's standing right behind me.""
The call ended.
And on the screen appeared a final message.
*Incoming location shared.*
The address loaded.
I recognized it instantly.
It was Griffin's old penthouse.
The home where our marriage ended.
The home where the lie began.
May you like
And somewhere inside that apartment...
Someone was waiting for us.
