Chapter 8: The Voice From the Past

Nobody moved after the call ended.

The phone remained in Olivia’s hand.

The screen had gone dark.

But Daniel’s voice seemed to remain trapped in the room.

Don’t trust Vanessa.

Three words.

Three words that should have brought clarity.

Instead, they created more questions.

Adrian stared at his niece.

“Olivia.””

She looked up slowly.

“That was him.””

Adrian’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not disbelief.

Fear.

“Are you sure?””

Olivia looked hurt.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“It was my father.””

The room became tense.

For years, Daniel Whitmore had been a ghost.

A name people avoided.

A wound nobody touched.

And now he had returned with a warning.

But he hadn’t explained anything.

He hadn’t apologized.

He hadn’t said where he had been.

He had only pointed at Vanessa.

Clara watched everyone carefully.

Adrian looked lost.

Vanessa looked devastated.

And that confused Clara more than anything.

Because if Vanessa was the person who caused all of this…

Why did she look like she had just been betrayed?

“Where is he?”” Adrian asked.

Olivia looked at the phone.

“He didn’t say.””

“Call him back.””

She tried.

The call went straight to voicemail.

Again.

And again.

Nothing.

Adrian walked toward the window.

His hands were clenched.

“I spent years thinking my brother abandoned his family.””

Nobody answered.

“Rachel disappeared. Daniel disappeared. Everyone left.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“And I was the only one who stayed.””

Clara looked at him.

“You stayed.””

Adrian turned.

“But did you see?””

The question surprised her.

“What?””

“Did I really see what was happening around me?””

Nobody spoke.

Because maybe the answer was no.

Maybe Adrian had spent years protecting a version of his family that didn’t exist.

Vanessa slowly stood.

“I need to tell you something.””

Adrian looked at her.

“About Daniel?””

She nodded.

The room became still.

“I lied about something.””

Clara watched her.

“What?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“The night Rachel disappeared…”

She stopped.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn’t just there to warn her.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Then why were you there?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Rachel asked me to come.””

That shocked everyone.

“Rachel called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph on the table.

“Because she found something.””

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She found out Emma wasn’t the only child connected to the hospital records.””

Clara frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“It means Rachel believed someone was changing identities.””

The room went silent.

Adrian’s face went pale.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Rachel thought so too.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Emma is my daughter.””

Vanessa looked at him sadly.

“I never said she wasn’t.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Rachel discovered something about Emma’s birth.””

Clara remembered the photograph.

Rachel holding baby Emma.

The impossible date.

The bracelet with her initials.

She looked at Olivia.

Everything was connected.

“Why would Rachel involve Clara?”” Clara asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“But she knew my name.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said,

“Because Rachel had been searching for you.””

The words hit Clara harder than she expected.

“Searching for me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Before she disappeared.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Clara laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing made sense anymore.

“A woman I never met knew my name, left clues for me, and trusted me to protect her daughter.””

She looked around.

“And nobody thinks that’s strange?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone did.

Adrian sat down slowly.

“What did Rachel find?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You said she trusted you.””

“She did.””

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“When I arrived at Rachel’s house, she was packing.””

“Packing?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed someone was watching her.””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Then whispered,

“Someone inside this family.””

That night, Adrian refused to let anyone leave the mansion.

Security was increased.

Doors were locked.

The atmosphere felt less like a home and more like a fortress.

Clara sat in the library with Olivia.

The girl looked exhausted.

“Do you think my dad is telling the truth?””

Clara looked at her.

“I think he knows something.””

“That’s not the same.””

“No.””

Olivia looked down.

“I waited years for him to come back.””

Clara’s heart softened.

“And now?””

“I don’t know how to feel.””

Clara sat beside her.

“Sometimes people can hurt us and still be people we miss.””

Olivia nodded.

“You’re not angry?””

“At him?””

“Yes.””

Clara thought about it.

“I don’t know enough yet.””

That was the truth.

Everyone in this family had a secret.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had something they weren’t saying.

A sound interrupted them.

A door closing.

Clara looked up.

“Did you hear that?””

Olivia nodded.

They walked into the hallway.

The mansion was dark.

Too quiet.

Then they saw it.

The light in Adrian’s office.

Someone was inside.

Clara moved closer.

“Stay here.””

Olivia shook her head.

“I’m coming.””

“Olivia.””

“I’m tired of everyone protecting me by hiding the truth.””

Clara looked at her.

Then nodded.

Together, they approached the office.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, papers were scattered across the desk.

A drawer had been pulled out.

Someone had been searching.

Clara stepped inside.

“Hello?””

No answer.

Then Olivia pointed.

“Clara.””

On the desk was an old envelope.

It had been hidden beneath the documents.

The name written on it made Clara freeze.

Rachel.

She picked it up carefully.

Inside was a letter.

But this time, it wasn’t for Clara.

It was for Adrian.

She read the first line.

*Adrian, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect Emma.*

Clara felt her stomach tighten.

She continued.

*The person you trust most is not who you think they are.*

A sound came from behind them.

Clara turned.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

“You found it.””

Olivia stepped back.

“You knew about this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Clara held the letter.

“Did you write this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why are you scared?””

Vanessa looked at the letter.

“Because I know what it says.””

Clara stared.

“How?””

Vanessa whispered,

“Because Rachel showed it to me before she disappeared.””

The room froze.

“Then tell us.””

Vanessa looked at them.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because if you read the rest…”

She stopped.

Clara’s grip tightened around the paper.

“If we read the rest, what?””

Vanessa looked toward the dark hallway.

Then whispered,

“Someone in this house will lose everything.””

Before Clara could respond, the lights suddenly went out.

The office fell into darkness.

Olivia gasped.

A second later, something crashed downstairs.

Someone was inside the mansion.

Someone who had bypassed security.

Someone who knew exactly where Rachel’s letter was hidden.

Clara grabbed Olivia’s hand.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A familiar voice.

A voice they never expected to hear again.

“Adrian.””

The lights flickered back on.

And standing at the end of the hallway was Daniel Whitmore.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Everyone froze.

Adrian stared at his brother.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Daniel’s eyes moved to Vanessa.

“You should have told him the truth years ago.””

Vanessa looked down.

Daniel stepped closer.

“And now it’s time everyone knows what really happened to Rachel.””

He looked at Clara.

Then at the letter in her hand.

“Because Rachel didn’t disappear.””

A pause.

“She was taken.””

The mansion went silent.

And for the first time, the Whitmore family had to face the truth.

May you like

Rachel had not left them.

Someone had stolen her away.
