Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Smile
Olivia stared at the message until the words blurred.
Delete the recording before Adrian sees everything.
She read it again.
Then again.
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
The pool patio was still filled with whispers, but somehow everything sounded distant. The voices of the guests, the sound of the ocean waves, the clinking of abandoned glasses on the tables — all of it faded behind one terrifying thought.
Someone knew.
Someone knew she had recorded the truth.
And someone was afraid of what else was on that video.
“Olivia?””
Eleanor’s voice pulled her back.
The older woman stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Olivia locked the screen quickly.
“Nothing.””
But this time, nobody believed her.
Not even herself.
Eleanor looked at her carefully.
“Sweetheart, you’re shaking.””
Olivia looked toward Adrian.
He was standing several feet away, facing Vanessa.
For the first time all afternoon, Vanessa looked like she was losing control.
Her perfect smile was gone.
Her confident posture was gone.
She looked nervous.
But Olivia couldn’t stop thinking about the message.
Delete the recording before Adrian sees everything.
Not “before Adrian sees the video.””
Before Adrian sees everything.
There was something else.
Something hidden.
“Who sent it?”” Eleanor whispered.
Olivia swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
“Show me.””
Olivia hesitated.
Then she handed over the phone.
Eleanor read the message.
Her expression immediately changed.
“Did you give anyone this number?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
“Did anyone know you were recording?””
Again, Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
Eleanor looked around the patio.
Her eyes moved from one person to another.
And suddenly, the family gathering didn’t feel like a party anymore.
It felt like a place full of secrets.
Adrian stood in front of Vanessa.
The woman he had trusted was now someone he barely recognized.
“Tell me the truth,” he said.
Vanessa wiped a tear from her cheek.
“I already told you.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
And that made it more dangerous.
“You told me a story.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
“That’s unfair.””
“Unfair?””
Adrian laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“My daughter almost fell into a pool.””
“I didn’t push her.””
“Then why did you touch the stroller?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The guests watched silently.
Clara stood near the edge of the patio, holding herself together.
She wanted to leave.
A part of her wanted to walk away from the entire Whitmore family.
From the accusations.
From the humiliation.
From the way Adrian had looked at her like she was a danger to the child she had protected.
But Emma was still watching her.
The little girl reached out.
“Clara.””
One word.
A small voice.
But it stopped Clara from leaving.
She walked closer.
“I’m here, sweetheart.””
Emma looked at Adrian.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at Clara.
“Clara saved me.””
The patio went silent again.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
The guilt on his face was impossible to miss.
Because his daughter had known the truth the entire time.
The adults were the ones who failed to see it.
Vanessa looked away.
And that small movement caught Clara’s attention.
Because Vanessa wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t shocked.
She was calculating.
Clara had seen that expression before.
The expression of someone searching for a way out.
“Why?”” Clara asked quietly.
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa frowned.
“Why what?””
“Why would you do this?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I told you. I didn’t.””
“You watched me jump into that pool.””
Clara’s voice trembled.
“You watched me save Emma.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“And you still tried to make me look guilty.””
The accusation hung in the air.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“No,” Clara replied.
“But I know you were willing to let everyone believe I hurt her.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked like she might explode.
Then she smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“You think you’re the hero now?””
Clara said nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
Adrian immediately noticed the threat in her tone.
“Vanessa.””
She turned.
“What?””
“What did you mean by that?””
Vanessa looked at him.
The anger disappeared.
She quickly softened her expression.
“I mean Clara doesn’t understand our family.””
But Olivia heard it.
And so did Eleanor.
That wasn’t what Vanessa had meant.
Not at first.
Later that evening, the mansion felt completely different.
The party ended early.
The guests left one by one, carrying rumors with them.
By sunset, the beautiful pool patio was empty.
The same place where everyone had laughed hours before now felt cold.
Clara sat alone in the guest room, staring at the small bag she had packed.
She had already decided.
She was leaving.
Not because she was guilty.
Because she was tired.
Tired of proving she cared.
Tired of being treated like someone who needed to defend herself.
A knock came at the door.
She didn’t answer.
The door opened anyway.
“Clara?””
It was Adrian.
She looked up.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Adrian stepped inside.
“I owe you an apology.””
Clara looked back at her bag.
“Yes.””
The simple answer surprised him.
“I’m sorry.””
“You should be.””
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“I was scared.””
“So was Emma.””
The words hit him.
Clara stood.
“She was terrified. She needed someone to protect her. And for a few minutes, everyone in that room looked at me like I was the person who hurt her.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice cracked.
“You saw your daughter crying and you looked for someone to blame. You didn’t ask what happened. You didn’t ask me if I was okay.””
Adrian had no response.
Because she was right.
“I trusted Vanessa,” he said quietly.
Clara looked at him.
“And I paid for that.””
The silence between them was painful.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
“There’s something you need to know.””
Clara crossed her arms.
“What?””
Adrian hesitated.
And that hesitation told her everything.
“This isn’t the first strange thing that has happened.””
Clara’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
Adrian looked toward the window.
“Over the past few months, small things have been happening.””
“Like what?””
“Documents moved. Private information leaked. Things missing from my office.””
Clara frowned.
“Why didn’t you say anything?””
“Because I thought it was unrelated.””
“And now?””
“Now I’m not sure.””
Clara stared at him.
“Do you think Vanessa is involved?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
But he didn’t need to.
His silence was enough.
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Adrian looked down.
It wasn’t his.
It was Clara’s.
She checked the screen.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then a message appeared.
*If you want to know why Vanessa did this, meet me alone tonight.*
Clara’s heart started racing.
Another message arrived.
*Come to the old garden house. Don’t tell Adrian.*
She looked at the screen.
Then at Adrian.
“What is it?””
Clara locked the phone.
“Nothing.””
But as soon as Adrian left the room, she knew she had made a decision.
Because whoever sent that message knew something.
Something about Vanessa.
Something about the pool.
Something about the secrets inside the Whitmore family.
And if Clara wanted the truth, she had to find out who was hiding it.
At midnight, she walked across the dark garden toward the abandoned glass house.
The wind moved through the trees.
The mansion behind her disappeared into the shadows.
She reached for the old door handle.
It opened slowly.
Inside, someone was waiting.
A voice came from the darkness.
“I knew you would come.””
Clara froze.
Because she recognized the voice.
It belonged to someone she never expected.
May you like
And then the person stepped into the moonlight.
“Vanessa isn’t the only one who wanted Emma gone.””
