Chapter 7: The Truth About Emma
Clara stared at the photograph until her eyes burned.
The image didn’t make sense.
Nothing about it made sense.
Rachel standing outside a hospital.
Rachel holding a baby.
A baby who looked exactly like Emma.
But the date.
The date was impossible.
Clara checked it again.
Then again.
Her fingers trembled as she held the photograph under the hallway light.
Three years before Emma was born.
That was what the date said.
Three years.
A cold feeling spread through her chest.
Someone wanted her to question everything.
And the worst part was…
It was working.
A floorboard creaked behind her.
Clara turned quickly.
Adrian stood at the end of the hallway.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
His eyes moved from her face to the photograph in her hand.
And the color disappeared from his face.
“Where did you get that?””
The question was almost identical to the one he asked when he saw Rachel’s old picture.
But this time, there was something different.
Panic.
Clara held up the photograph.
“Someone left this outside my door.””
Adrian walked closer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like the picture itself was dangerous.
“What does this mean?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Clara’s heart sank.
“You know.””
Adrian looked away.
“Clara…”
“No.””
Her voice hardened.
“You don’t get to do that.””
“Do what?””
“Protect everyone by hiding the truth.””
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m trying to protect Emma.””
“And what about me?””
The question stopped him.
Because there was no easy answer.
Clara looked down at the photograph again.
“Someone is trying to make me look guilty. Someone is threatening Olivia. Someone knows about Rachel. And now someone is telling me Emma’s entire life is a lie.””
She stepped closer.
“I deserve to know what’s happening.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered,
“Emma is my daughter.””
Clara frowned.
“I didn’t ask that.””
His expression changed.
Because she understood.
She wasn’t asking if Emma belonged to him.
She was asking about the secret behind the photograph.
“Who is her mother?””
The hallway became silent.
Finally, Adrian answered.
“Rachel.””
Clara stared.
“Then why does that picture exist?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You recognized it.””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“I recognized Rachel.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t know everything.””
For the first time, Clara believed him.
Because Adrian didn’t look like someone hiding a secret.
He looked like someone realizing there was a secret he never knew existed.
The next morning, Adrian called Eleanor and Olivia into the library.
Vanessa was there too.
But unlike previous meetings, she didn’t sit beside Adrian.
She sat alone.
The balance of power had changed.
Adrian placed the photograph on the table.
Everyone looked at it.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“Emma?””
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Where did you find this?””
“Outside Clara’s room.””
Vanessa immediately looked alarmed.
“That’s impossible.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
“Why?””
Vanessa paused.
“I mean… because nobody should have access to old pictures like that.””
Clara noticed.
Again.
That reaction.
Too specific.
Too emotional.
“You know something,” Clara said.
Vanessa looked at her.
“I don’t.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
“I’m not afraid.””
“You always say that.””
Vanessa stood.
“I am tired of being accused.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Then help us.””
She froze.
“What?””
“Tell us what you know.””
Vanessa stared at him.
And Clara saw something she hadn’t seen before.
A decision.
Vanessa was choosing whether to keep lying.
Finally, she sat back down.
“Rachel was hiding something.””
The room became still.
“What?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“She wasn’t the person you thought she was.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“You don’t get to talk about Rachel like that.””
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then listen.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Rachel had secrets.””
Clara watched her carefully.
“What secrets?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“She was investigating Emma’s birth.””
Adrian went completely silent.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Vanessa continued.
“Rachel believed someone changed medical records.””
Clara felt a chill.
“The hospital records?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Before she disappeared, she told me she found something wrong.””
Adrian stared.
“You talked to Rachel before she disappeared?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“A week before.””
“And you never told me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because she made me promise.””
“Why would Rachel trust you?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was the question nobody expected.
Because Vanessa wasn’t acting like someone who hated Rachel.
She was acting like someone who had once been close to her.
After the meeting, Clara found Vanessa alone in the hallway.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then Clara said,
“You knew Rachel.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Why did you hide it?””
“Because Adrian would never forgive me.””
“For what?””
Vanessa looked toward the library door.
“Because I was the last person to see Rachel before she disappeared.””
Clara felt her stomach tighten.
“What?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with regret.
“I went to her house that night.””
“Why?””
“To warn her.””
“About what?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“About someone who was following her.””
Clara stepped closer.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered,
“Daniel.””
Olivia’s father.
The name echoed in Clara’s mind.
“But Daniel disappeared.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s what everyone thinks.””
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
“He didn’t disappear.””
A cold silence followed.
“Then where is he?””
Vanessa looked at Clara.
“I don’t know.””
“But you saw him?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night Rachel vanished.””
Clara stared.
“You saw Daniel and Rachel together?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice dropped.
“I saw Daniel leave Rachel’s house.””
That evening, Olivia found something hidden inside Rachel’s old belongings.
Eleanor had finally allowed her to search through boxes stored in the attic.
Years of forgotten memories sat inside dusty containers.
Old letters.
Family photographs.
Documents.
And one small wooden box.
Inside was a bracelet.
A baby bracelet.
Olivia picked it up.
Then she noticed something carved into the metal.
Two letters.
C.B.
She frowned.
“Clara Bennett.””
The room went quiet.
Clara, who was standing behind her, stepped forward.
“Why is my name on this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Olivia found a folded piece of paper underneath.
She opened it.
It was Rachel’s handwriting.
*The truth about Emma is not what everyone thinks.*
Clara held her breath.
The note continued.
*If anything happens to me, find Clara. She is the only person who can protect my daughter.*
Everyone stared at Clara.
Her heart pounded.
“Why would Rachel write that?””
Then Olivia turned the paper over.
There was one final sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
*Because Clara is the reason Emma survived.*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the question was no longer who wanted to hurt Emma.
The question was why Rachel had trusted Clara long before Clara ever met her.
And somewhere in the mansion…
Someone had just realized the truth was closer than they expected.
A phone rang.
Everyone looked at Olivia.
She checked the screen.
Her face turned pale.
“It’s Daniel.””
The room froze.
Because Daniel had been missing for years.
And now he was calling.
“Answer it,” Adrian whispered.
Olivia pressed the button.
A voice came through the phone.
A voice older than the memories.
A voice everyone thought they would never hear again.
“Olivia…”
The girl covered her mouth.
“Dad?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said something that made everyone’s blood run cold.
“Don’t trust Vanessa.””
The call ended.
And for the first time…
May you like
Everyone wondered if Vanessa had been the person hiding the truth.
Or the person trying to reveal it.
