Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Warning
Clara stopped breathing.
For a moment, she wondered if exhaustion had finally caught up with her.
Maybe the stress had become too much.
Maybe her mind was creating a nightmare because the day had been impossible from the beginning.
But then the figure stepped closer.
The moonlight passed through the cracked glass ceiling of the old garden house, revealing a familiar face.
Olivia.
Clara stared.
“Olivia?””
The twelve-year-old girl looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
Clara’s confusion turned into concern.
“What are you doing here?””
Olivia closed the door behind her.
“I sent the message.””
The words landed heavily.
Clara looked at her.
“You?””
Olivia nodded.
“I didn’t know who else to tell.””
Clara took a step closer.
“You scared me.””
“I know.””
“Olivia, you told me not to tell Adrian.””
The girl looked away.
“Because I don’t know if I can trust him.””
Clara froze.
Those were not words a child should have to say.
“Why would you think that?””
Olivia squeezed her phone tightly.
“Because my uncle doesn’t see things until they’re impossible to ignore.””
The sentence reminded Clara of the pool.
Of Adrian standing there.
Of the way he looked at her before he knew the truth.
“He made a mistake today,” Clara said quietly.
Olivia looked at her.
“He almost made you leave.””
Clara didn’t answer.
Because she had almost done exactly that.
The garden house was silent except for the sound of wind moving through the trees.
Finally, Olivia sat down on an old wooden chair.
“There’s more on the video.””
Clara looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
Olivia unlocked her phone.
“I only showed everyone the part where Emma almost fell.””
She pressed a button.
“But I kept watching after.””
Clara stepped closer.
The video played.
The angle was the same.
The balcony.
The pool.
The patio.
Then Vanessa appeared again.
But this time, Olivia paused before anything happened.
“Look.””
Clara leaned closer.
Olivia zoomed in.
Vanessa wasn’t looking at Emma.
She was looking toward the mansion.
Toward Adrian’s office window.
Clara frowned.
“She was checking if someone was watching.””
Olivia nodded.
“That’s what I thought too.””
The video continued.
Vanessa touched the stroller.
Then before walking away, she pulled something from her pocket.
A small piece of paper.
Clara stared.
“What is that?””
“I don’t know.””
The video was too far away to see clearly.
But Vanessa had placed the paper beneath the stroller blanket.
Clara felt a chill.
“She put something there.””
“Yes.””
“Did you see what it was?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
Clara looked at the screen.
“Why didn’t you show this part?””
“Because I was scared.””
The honesty in Olivia’s voice made Clara look at her.
“Scared of what?””
Olivia swallowed.
“Because I saw Vanessa talking to someone before the party.””
Clara’s expression changed.
“Who?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then whispered,
“My father.””
Clara went completely still.
“Your father?””
Olivia nodded.
“Daniel.””
The name meant nothing to Clara.
But the way Olivia said it told her everything.
Pain.
Anger.
Fear.
“Who is Daniel?””
Olivia looked at the floor.
“My dad.””
Clara sat down across from her.
“You never mentioned him.””
“Because nobody does.””
A sadness crossed Olivia’s face.
“He left years ago.””
Clara softened.
“I’m sorry.””
“He didn’t just leave.””
Olivia looked up.
“He disappeared after fighting with my uncle.””
“About what?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then she said,
“The company.””
The Whitmore family business was something Clara knew about.
Everyone knew about it.
The Whitmore Corporation was one of the biggest companies in the city.
Adrian had built his reputation around it.
Successful.
Responsible.
Untouchable.
But Olivia’s words painted a different picture.
“Daniel was supposed to become the next CEO,” she explained.
Clara listened carefully.
“But Adrian took over.””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa?””
Olivia looked at her phone.
“She appeared after my dad disappeared.””
The pieces started connecting.
Slowly.
Uncomfortably.
“Do you think Vanessa and your father were involved?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Her voice became smaller.
“But I know my dad didn’t just leave.””
Clara looked at her.
“What makes you think that?””
“Because the night before he disappeared, I heard him arguing with Vanessa.””
The garden house suddenly felt colder.
“What did they say?””
Olivia closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“She said, ‘You promised me everything would be easier.’”
Clara’s heart beat faster.
“And your father?””
“He said, ‘You don’t understand what you’ve done.’”
Neither of them spoke.
Because sometimes the worst truths arrived quietly.
A sudden noise came from outside.
Clara stood immediately.
“What was that?””
Olivia looked toward the window.
The trees moved in the darkness.
Then footsteps.
Someone was outside.
Clara grabbed Olivia’s hand.
“Stay behind me.””
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Whoever was outside knew they were there.
Clara’s heart raced.
“Who is it?””
No answer.
Then a piece of paper slid underneath the door.
Both of them stared.
Olivia stepped forward.
Clara stopped her.
“Wait.””
They stood there for several seconds.
Finally, Clara picked up the paper.
There were only four words written on it.
*Stop digging, Clara.*
Her stomach dropped.
Olivia whispered,
“They know.””
Clara looked at the locked door.
Someone had followed them.
Someone knew they were searching for answers.
The next morning, Clara woke up to find another surprise.
Her suitcase was gone.
Not moved.
Not hidden.
Gone.
She searched the room.
Nothing.
Her clothes.
Her documents.
Her personal belongings.
Everything had disappeared.
Then she noticed something on the bed.
A photograph.
An old photograph.
She picked it up.
Her hands began shaking.
Because the picture showed Vanessa.
Standing beside another person.
A person Clara recognized.
Someone who had no reason to be connected to Vanessa.
Someone who was supposed to be completely innocent.
The back of the photograph had a handwritten message.
*Ask Adrian why he never told you the truth about his first wife.*
Clara stared at the words.
Adrian’s first wife.
A part of the Whitmore family history nobody talked about.
A woman whose name Clara had never heard.
She turned the photo over again.
And then she noticed the date.
The picture had been taken three years before Emma was born.
Three years before Vanessa entered Adrian’s life.
Three years before anyone thought there was a reason to fear her.
Clara looked toward the mansion.
Suddenly, she understood something.
This was never just about the stroller.
The pool.
Or Vanessa making her look guilty.
The entire incident was a distraction.
Someone wanted everyone focused on Clara.
Because while they were watching her…
They weren’t looking at the real secret.
A secret buried inside the Whitmore family.
A secret Adrian had kept from everyone.
Including Clara.
And as she walked downstairs holding the photograph, she found Adrian waiting in the hallway.
His face changed when he saw what she was holding.
Because he recognized the picture immediately.
“Where did you get that?””
Clara looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were married before?””
Adrian went completely silent.
Then, from behind him, Vanessa appeared.
And for the first time since Clara had met her…
Vanessa looked afraid.
“Clara,” Adrian whispered.
“Who was she?””
Adrian stared at the photograph.
Then he said the name Clara had never heard before.
“Rachel.””
A pause.
“My first wife.””
Clara waited.
But Adrian’s next words changed everything.
“Rachel didn’t die in an accident.””
The hallway went silent.
May you like
Because the woman everyone thought belonged to the past…
Was connected to everything happening now.
