Chapter 4 - THE CONFRONTATION

Three days later, Julian arrived at the office as if nothing had happened.

Daniel watched him walk through the glass doors from his private office window. He wore his usual tailored suit. His posture was confident. His step steady. He greeted the receptionist with a smile. He looked exactly like the respectable, trusted advisor he had pretended to be for more than ten years.

Daniel stood up. He placed the note and a copy of the voice recording inside his breast pocket. He walked out of his office and down the hall toward Julian's. He did not call ahead. He did not send word.

Julian looked up as Daniel entered. He smiled. Warm. Professional. Completely false.

"Daniel. I was wondering when you would come to see me. Terrible news about Vanessa. Truly."

Daniel closed the door behind him. He locked it. The click echoed sharply in the quiet room.

"Sit down, Julian," Daniel said.

Julian's smile faltered just slightly. But he leaned back in his chair and folded his hands comfortably on the desk.

"Is something the matter?"

Daniel walked forward slowly. He laid the handwritten note on the desk between them. He watched Julian's eyes flicker toward the paper. Saw the briefest flash of fear before his face smoothed over once more.

"Where did you get this?" Julian asked, his voice remaining remarkably calm.

"Where do you think I got it?" Daniel replied. "It was found among Vanessa's private papers. Along with a recording of a conversation between the two of you. A conversation in which you discussed what would happen to me. To my mother. To everything I built."

Julian stared at him. Then slowly, deliberately, he picked up the note. He glanced at the handwriting. He set it back down.

"This proves nothing," he said coolly. "Anyone could have forged my handwriting. Anyone could have written this to frame me. Vanessa is in prison. She needs someone to blame. It makes perfect sense she would try to drag me down with her."

Daniel pulled the recorder from his pocket. He placed it on the desk beside the note.

"Your voice. Your words. And in the background... the chime of a clock that only exists inside my home. A clock that chimes incorrectly, three sharp notes, every quarter hour. A sound no one else would recognize."

For the first time, Julian looked truly afraid. His composure cracked. He leaned forward.

"You cannot use this. You do not understand what you are touching."

"Tell me why," Daniel challenged. "Tell me the truth. Now. Or I walk straight to the police station and hand them everything."

Julian studied him for a long moment. Then he leaned back in his chair and laughed. A dry, humorless sound. The mask slipped away completely. The respectable advisor vanished, revealing the man beneath. Harder. Colder. Dangerous.

"You always were too trusting, Daniel," he said. "Too soft. Too willing to believe the best of everyone. Vanessa saw it the moment she met you. And I saw it too. It made everything so easy."

"You used her," Daniel said.

"I gave her what she wanted," Julian corrected. "Beauty. Wealth. Status. In exchange, she gave me access. She signed documents. She distracted you. She did everything I asked. And in return... I promised her she would have it all."

"And my mother?" Daniel asked, his voice low and tight. "Did you order Vanessa to kill her?"

Julian did not even blink.

"Your mother was the only one who suspected. The only one who watched. The only one who listened. She had to be silenced. Vanessa hesitated. I told her if she did not act, I would walk away and leave her with nothing. So she did what was necessary."

Rage burned hot and bright through Daniel's chest. He gripped the edge of the desk.

"You tried to murder an old woman. You tried to destroy my family. You betrayed every trust I ever placed in you."

Julian stood up slowly. He walked around the desk until he stood barely an arm's length away. He looked Daniel directly in the eye.

"And you still think this is just between us?" he said quietly. "Do you honestly believe I worked alone? Vanessa was small change. I answered to people far more powerful than you can imagine. Men with judges in their pockets. Men with police on their payroll. Men who can make evidence vanish. Who can make witnesses disappear."

He leaned closer. His voice dropped to a whisper.

"If you go to the police, you do not just threaten me. You threaten them. And they will not hesitate to do what Vanessa failed to do. Your mother will not be so lucky a second time. You will not be so lucky."

"Are you threatening me?" Daniel asked.

"I am warning you," Julian replied smoothly. "Walk away. Destroy the evidence. Pretend this conversation never happened. Keep your life. Keep your mother safe. Or... fight us. And lose everything. Including the people you love."

Daniel stared at him. He thought of his mother shivering inside that cold room. He thought of Vanessa's hatred. He thought of the message sent to his phone. And he realized Julian was not bluffing. He was terrified. Not of Daniel. But of the men standing behind him.

Julian was not the mastermind. He was merely another pawn. Exactly like Vanessa.

Daniel stepped back. He picked up the note and the recorder. He slipped them back inside his pocket.

"You have twenty-four hours," Daniel said. "Come to me. Tell me the names of everyone involved. Give me proof. And perhaps... I will consider protecting you. But if you walk out of here and run to them... I release everything. Evidence, recording, note. Every single thing. And let the law decide what happens to you."

Julian's eyes narrowed. "You would dare risk your mother's life?"

"I would dare everything," Daniel said. "Because I now know one thing you do not. My mother survived. She is strong. And she will testify against every single one of you. So you choose. Tell me the truth. Or burn with them when it all comes crashing down."

He walked to the door. He opened it. But before he stepped into the hallway, he looked back one last time.

"Twenty-four hours, Julian. Think carefully. They will sacrifice you the moment it becomes convenient. I am the only chance you have left."

Daniel walked away. He could feel Julian's eyes burning into his back the entire way down the hall. He had delivered the ultimatum. Now he could only wait.

But as he reached the elevator, his phone buzzed. A text message. Not from Julian. From an unknown number.

*WARNING DELIVERED. HE WILL CHOOSE THEM. PREPARE.*

Daniel froze.

Someone had been listening. Someone had watched him enter Julian's office. Someone knew exactly what had been said inside that locked room.

He looked up sharply. Down the hallway, near the stairwell door, a man in a gray suit caught his eye. The man gave the faintest nod. Then turned and walked away. Vanishing around the corner.

Daniel did not follow. He stood very still, his heart pounding.

May you like

They were closer than he had ever imagined.

And they were watching his every move.
