Chapter 19 - HEALING AND HOPE

We visited the cemetery on the anniversary of his father's death.

Daniel laid flowers upon the grave. Brushed clean the stone. Stood silent for a long time. His head bowed. His hands clasped behind his back.

When he turned around... he looked younger. Lighter. As if a weight twenty years heavy had finally lifted from his shoulders.

"He knows," Daniel said. "Somehow... I truly believe he knows. And he is at peace."

"He is at peace because we survived," I said. "Because we exposed the truth. Because we kept our honor intact. That is all he ever truly wanted."

Daniel took my arm. We walked slowly back toward the car.

"I forgave him today," Daniel said quietly.

I looked at him. "Robert?"

"Yes."

"After everything?"

Daniel nodded.

"Holding onto hatred... gives him power. It keeps him alive inside my heart. And I am done giving him anything. He destroyed himself. He paid the price. And I... choose to let him go. So he cannot hurt us anymore."

Tears pricked my eyes. I stopped. Laid my hand upon his chest. Over his heart.

"That is the bravest thing you have ever done," I said. "Braver than fighting him. Braver than surviving. Forgiving... takes a strength most people will never know."

Daniel smiled. A true, gentle smile.

"My father wrote... do not become like him. Forgiveness... is how I make certain I never do."
