Chapter 12 - THE HARDEST CHOICE

The cottage burned until sunset.
I stayed in the cellar until the flames died down to embers. Then I climbed out, coughing, covered in ash, and began the long, painful walk toward the lighthouse. My legs barely held me. My chest burned with every breath. But I kept moving. Daniel needed me. Elias needed me. And Robert... must not be allowed to escape.
I reached the lighthouse an hour later. Elias's friend, an old fisherman named Tom, took me in. Gave me water. Bandaged my hands. And told me what I already feared.
"A fleet of three boats sailed out an hour ago," Tom said gravely. "Bound straight for the buoy. Armed men. They took a hostage aboard the lead boat. Bound. Gagged."
Daniel.
I looked at the clock on the wall.
Three hours remaining until the upload completed.
Three hours before Robert's name blasted across every server, every newsroom, every law enforcement agency on three continents.
If he realized what was happening... he could disable the transmission. Destroy the signal source. Kill Daniel. Sail away. Vanish forever.
If he stayed... and the upload completed... he was finished. Ruined. Arrested the moment he stepped ashore.
"He will not wait passively," I said. "He will try to stop it. He will try to find where the signal originates."
"Elias built the beacon into the buoy itself," Tom said quietly. "Hidden inside the navigation housing. Robert will never find it in time. Unless..."
"Unless what?" I asked.
Tom looked at me. His expression grave.
"Unless Daniel tells him exactly where to look. Under torture. Under threat of death."
The room went silent.
I closed my eyes. The choice was terrible. Unthinkable.
If Daniel remained silent... he would die. But Robert would be exposed. Brought to justice. Everything my husband died for. Everything Elias suffered for. Everything we fought for... would be achieved.
If Daniel spoke... he lived. But Robert destroyed the beacon. Escaped. Vanished. Free to build his empire elsewhere. Free to hunt us down years from now.
Tom placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
"You can sail out," he said. "In my small skiff. Before the deadline. Before the transmission completes. You can offer Robert a trade. Daniel's life... in exchange for the location of the beacon. Or the reverse."
I opened my eyes. My hands trembled.
"Robert will not keep his word," I said. "If I give him the beacon... he kills us both. If I do not... he kills Daniel."
Tom nodded slowly.
"There is no safe choice, Margaret. Only the one you can live with."
I walked to the window. Looked out across the dark water. Toward the distant lights of Robert's boats waiting far out at sea.
My son. My only child. The man who had risked everything to protect me. To honor his father. To avenge Elias.
And justice. Truth. Everything we had sacrificed to build.
Could I trade one for the other? Could I sacrifice Daniel to destroy Robert?
My heart broke at the thought.
Then I remembered something Daniel had said. Weeks ago. Standing in this very cottage. Holding his father's letter. Speaking of his father's courage. His honor.
*My father died knowing the truth would outlive him. That even if he fell... justice would eventually come.*
Daniel would not want me to trade the truth for his life. He would rather die than let Robert escape.
But I was his mother. And I could not let him die.
I turned to Tom.
"Get me to the buoy," I said. "Before the upload completes. I will not trade the truth. But I will buy enough time for the transmission to finish."
"And then?" Tom asked.
May you like
"And then... we face whatever comes together."
