Chapter 9: The Survivor
I stared at Mercer’s name on the phone.
My mind refused to accept the words.
The survivor.
The one person who had vanished after Operation Viper Fall.
The one person whose body was never recovered.
Marcus Hale.
My teammate.
My friend.
My mistake.
“Where is he?”” I asked.
Mercer didn't answer immediately.
That was when I knew.
“Mercer.””
“Elena…”
“Where is he?””
A pause.
“Inside the facility.””
My blood went cold.
The old facility.
The place we had just left.
I looked at Madison.
She understood immediately.
“Someone followed us.””
I nodded.
My father looked confused.
“Who?””
I looked at him.
“The man you thought died.””
Nobody moved.
Then the lights flickered.
Again.
Every instinct in my body activated.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Someone was nearby.
I whispered:
“Everyone get away from the windows.””
My father stared.
“What?””
“Now.””
My tone made him listen.
Seconds later, the glass shattered.
Everyone dropped.
A bullet hit the wall where my father had been standing.
Chaos exploded.
My mother screamed.
Madison moved toward her instantly.
Mercer’s team responded.
I was already moving.
Because I knew.
This wasn't an attack.
It was a message.
I reached the front door.
A figure stood outside.
Watching.
Waiting.
I stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
The figure smiled.
Even after fifteen years, I recognized him.
Older.
Scarred.
But alive.
“Hello, Elena.””
My hands tightened.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
He smiled sadly.
“So are you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because they were true.
The woman I was before that mission had died too.
“Why?””
Marcus looked past me.
At my family.
“Because they needed to know.””
“Know what?””
“That Black Viper wasn't a hero.””
I shook my head.
“You’re still doing this?””
His expression changed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That night wasn't about the mission.””
He stepped closer.
“It was about what they wanted after.””
I watched him carefully.
“Vale recruited you.””
Marcus smiled.
“No.””
A pause.
“Vale saved me.””
I almost laughed.
“You betrayed us.””
“No.””
His voice sharpened.
“I exposed them.””
The anger in his voice surprised me.
Because it sounded real.
He believed himself.
Marcus looked at Madison.
“Do you know why they created Second Viper?””
She didn't answer.
“Because they were afraid of Elena.””
I stepped forward.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“They were afraid because you couldn't be controlled.””
The words sounded familiar.
Because Vale had said something similar.
“You both want the same thing.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why destroy my life?””
“Because you were protecting the wrong people.””
Silence.
I hated that part of me understood.
Not agreed.
Understood.
Because I had spent years wondering if the system that created Black Viper had been worth protecting.
Marcus continued.
“Your father knew.””
I looked back.
My father went pale.
“Marcus…”
“You knew what they did to her.””
My father said nothing.
Marcus laughed.
“Exactly.””
I stepped outside.
“Tell me the truth.””
Marcus looked at me.
“The real reason they erased Black Viper.””
The wind moved between us.
Then he said:
“Because you discovered Project Second Viper before they were ready.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Marcus nodded.
“You found out they were building replacements.””
I looked at Madison.
She looked devastated.
“You were never supposed to graduate.””
Her face changed.
“They planned to use me?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at me.
“And when you tried to expose it, they destroyed your reputation.””
I felt the world shift.
The betrayal wasn't from one person.
It was an entire system.
“But why did you disappear?””
Marcus looked away.
“Because I survived.””
A painful silence.
“I thought if they believed I was dead, I could find evidence.””
“And Vale?””
“He helped me.””
I shook my head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I expect you to see it.””
He threw something onto the ground.
A small device.
A recording.
Mercer picked it up.
He played it.
A voice came through.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made everyone freeze.
My former commander.
The man who signed my mission reports.
The man who called me a failure.
The recording said:
“Black Viper must be removed before she exposes the program.””
My breath stopped.
Marcus watched me.
“Now you know.””
I looked at the recording.
At my family.
At Madison.
At the life I thought I understood.
Then Marcus said one final thing.
“The person who ordered your elimination…”
He paused.
“Is still in command.””
And behind him, another vehicle arrived.
A military vehicle.
With an official seal.
Mercer looked at it.
Then whispered:
“No.””
I turned.
“Who is it?””
Mercer’s face went pale.
“Your former commander.””
The door opened.
And the man who destroyed my life stepped out.
Alive.
May you like
Smiling.
And waiting for me.
