Chapter 8: The Father’s Choice
We returned home after midnight.
Nobody spoke during the drive back.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
My father’s signature.
Project Second Viper.
The possibility that he knew.
The possibility that he chose.
I kept replaying the image in my mind.
The paper.
The date.
The signature.
My father had always told me he didn't understand my career.
Maybe that was a lie.
Maybe he understood more than anyone.
When we arrived, the house was dark.
My mother was waiting.
She had refused to leave until we returned.
The moment she saw our faces, she knew.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
My father stood from the couch.
He looked at me.
And immediately, I knew.
He knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
“You found it.””
The room went silent.
My mother turned.
“Found what?””
I looked at my father.
“Project Second Viper.””
His face changed.
That was all I needed.
The truth had arrived before the explanation.
My mother stepped back.
“What is she talking about?””
My father sat down slowly.
Like his legs couldn't support him anymore.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I laughed quietly.
“That sentence always comes before a terrible truth.””
He looked at me.
“Elena…”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“Not this time.””
Madison stood beside me.
“Dad, were you involved?””
My father closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
My mother gasped.
“What?””
He looked ashamed.
“I was approached after Elena’s final mission.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because they needed someone close to you.””
The room went cold.
“Close to me?””
He nodded.
“They believed you were unstable after what happened.””
I stared.
“Unstable?””
He looked down.
“I didn’t believe them.””
“Then why help?””
His silence was painful.
Then:
“Because they told me Madison would be protected.””
Madison froze.
“What?””
My father looked at her.
“They told me they needed a new operative. Someone with potential.””
Her face changed.
“They used me.””
“No.””
My father shook his head.
“I thought I was helping you.””
Madison laughed bitterly.
“You chose me.””
The words cut.
My father looked broken.
“I thought Elena had already lost everything.””
I stepped back.
“So you decided I was the sacrifice.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“You made a choice.””
He couldn't deny it.
Because he had.
Maybe not out of hatred.
Maybe not out of cruelty.
But choices didn't become harmless just because they were made with fear.
My mother sat down.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
My entire life had been built around a question.
Why didn't they see me?
Now I knew.
They saw me.
They just saw something they couldn't handle.
My father looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Then Madison spoke.
“Did you ever tell her?””
Everyone looked at her.
My father frowned.
“Tell who?””
“Tell Elena that you knew what she did.””
Silence.
I looked at Madison.
“What are you talking about?””
She looked at me.
“I found another file.””
My heart sank.
“What file?””
She swallowed.
“The real mission report.””
My father went pale.
“No.””
Madison looked at him.
“You knew.””
“Madison, don't.””
But she continued.
“Operation Viper Fall wasn't a failure.””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She handed me a small folder.
“I found it before tonight.””
My hands shook as I opened it.
The report inside was different.
The official version said:
*BLACK VIPER COMPROMISED MISSION.*
The hidden version said:
*BLACK VIPER PREVENTED CATASTROPHIC FRIENDLY FIRE EVENT.*
I stared.
The words blurred.
“What does this mean?””
Madison looked at me.
“It means you saved your team.””
My father whispered:
“You were never the problem.””
I looked at him.
“Then why?””
His eyes filled.
“Because the truth would have destroyed everything.””
“No.””
I closed the folder.
“The lie destroyed everything.””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
Mercer.
I answered immediately.
“What happened?””
His voice was urgent.
“Elena, you need to get out of the house.””
I stood.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because the person who helped Vale access your file…”
I looked around.
Everyone froze.
Mercer finished:
“...was your father’s former security officer.””
My father’s face changed.
“What?””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Who?””
Mercer answered.
And the name made my blood turn cold.
“Your old teammate.””
I stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
“Elena.””
“No.””
I knew every person from that mission.
Every person who died.
Every person who disappeared.
Except one.
Mercer lowered his voice.
“The man who survived with Vale.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Because there was only one person that could be.
And he had been dead for fifteen years.
