Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back
Darkness changed people.
A room full of confident officers suddenly became a collection of frightened strangers.
Phones appeared instantly.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Someone shouted.
Someone else knocked over a chair.
I stood still.
Not because I wasn't afraid.
Because fear had a sound.
A heartbeat.
A breath.
A moment where your instincts decided whether you survived.
And mine had been trained long before this party.
“Everyone stay calm,” Mercer ordered.
His voice cut through the panic.
“Security team, check exits.””
Officers moved.
I looked around the room.
My family stood near the wall.
My mother held onto my father’s arm.
Madison was scanning the room.
Not panicking.
Assessing.
For the first time, I saw the soldier inside my sister.
She noticed me watching.
“What?””
I shook my head.
“Nothing.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Act like you’re fine.””
The honesty surprised me.
Madison lowered her voice.
“You’ve been doing that your whole life.””
I looked away.
Because she was right.
Before I could answer, Mercer’s radio crackled.
“Colonel.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What is it?””
A pause.
Then:
“We found the source.””
Mercer’s expression changed.
“Where?””
“The control room.””
He grabbed his weapon.
“Who is it?””
The radio went silent.
Too long.
Then the voice answered.
“It’s not a person.””
Mercer frowned.
“What?””
“It’s a recording.””
My stomach tightened.
A trap.
Mercer understood too.
“Everyone move away from the center of the room.””
Too late.
The speakers turned on.
A man’s voice filled the hall.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
“Hello again.””
Nobody needed an introduction.
Adrian Vale.
My father looked at me.
“That’s him?””
“Yes.””
The voice continued.
“I imagine everyone is curious.””
A pause.
“Especially you, Elena.””
Hearing my first name from him felt worse than hearing Black Viper.
Because very few people knew the person beneath the legend.
Madison looked at me.
“You never told us your name was attached to this.””
I ignored the comment.
“Vale.””
The speakers crackled.
“Yes.””
“You’re alive.””
A quiet laugh.
“Disappointed?””
I felt anger rise.
Not fear.
Anger.
“You were declared dead.””
“I know.””
“You let people believe that.””
“I had no choice.””
I almost laughed.
“No choice?””
The room listened.
Everyone heard.
Everyone finally heard the conversation I never wanted to have.
“You destroyed an entire team.””
Silence.
Then Vale answered.
“No.””
The confidence in his voice was disturbing.
“You did.””
My jaw tightened.
“You know that’s a lie.””
“Do I?””
The screen turned on again.
A new video.
Security footage.
Not from the battlefield.
From the night of the operation.
The room watched.
I watched.
And for a moment, I wasn't in the event hall anymore.
I was back there.
Fifteen years ago.
The rain.
The smoke.
The broken radio.
My team trapped behind enemy lines.
Vale standing beside me.
Then the explosion.
The footage cut off before the important part.
Before the truth.
My father whispered:
“What happened?””
I couldn't answer.
Because the memory hurt.
Because I had spent years blaming myself.
Because that night had followed me everywhere.
The screen changed again.
A sentence appeared.
*ELENA CROSS ABANDONED HER TEAM.*
My mother gasped.
Madison stared at me.
“No.””
The word came quietly.
But I heard it.
She didn't believe it.
Not completely.
The screen showed another message.
*BUT TONIGHT, SHE WILL TELL YOU WHY.*
The speakers clicked.
Vale spoke again.
“You spent fifteen years pretending you were a victim.””
I stepped toward the speaker.
“You know nothing about what happened.””
“Oh, I know everything.””
“Then tell them.””
A pause.
Then:
“I will.””
The room froze.
“Because the truth is…”
The lights flickered.
“Black Viper didn't save the team.””
I clenched my fists.
Vale continued.
“She killed the mission.””
The words landed like bullets.
My family stared.
The officers looked uncertain.
And the worst part?
For a second…
I saw doubt.
Even in Mercer’s eyes.
Not because he believed Vale.
Because he remembered.
Because he knew there were things even he didn't know.
The speakers went silent.
Then one final message appeared.
*COME FIND ME.*
Below it was an address.
Mercer looked at it.
His face changed.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“That location…”
“What?””
He swallowed.
“That’s where Operation Viper Fall began.””
My heart stopped.
Impossible.
The place had been abandoned.
Destroyed.
Forgotten.
Unless…
Unless Vale wanted me to return there.
Madison stepped forward.
“I’m coming with you.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“This isn’t a training exercise.””
“I know.””
“You don’t understand what he is.””
Madison held my gaze.
“Maybe not.””
Then she looked around at our family.
“At least now I understand what you are.””
I didn't know what to say.
Because for the first time in fifteen years…
my sister wasn't looking at me like competition.
She was looking at me like family.
Mercer interrupted.
“You both need to understand something.””
We turned.
His expression was serious.
“If Vale survived that night…”
He looked at me.
“Then he knows something we don't.””
“What?””
Mercer answered quietly.
“The mission was never the end.””
A chill went through me.
“What does that mean?””
He looked toward the dark screen.
“It means Operation Viper Fall may have been a beginning.””
And somewhere in the building…
a phone began ringing.
Not mine.
Not Mercer’s.
Madison’s.
She looked down.
Her face changed.
“Who is calling you?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she was staring at the screen.
At the name.
May you like
A name none of us expected.
Adrian Vale.
