Thinking

Chapter 8: The Third Brother

The man stepped into the red emergency light.

For one impossible second, I thought I was looking at Daniel.

Then I thought I was looking at Michael.

Then I understood why my instincts had rejected both conclusions.

He had Jonathan Mercer’s eyes.

Not Daniel’s green.

Not Michael’s.

Gray.

Cold.

Familiar.

Keller stopped behind us.

The stranger smiled.

“You finally found the right tunnel.””

Jonathan raised his weapon.

“Adrian.””

The name hit the air like a gunshot.

Susan made a sound I had never heard from a human being before.

A gasp mixed with grief.

Leah grabbed her.

Daniel stared at the man.

“Who is Adrian?””

Nobody answered.

The stranger looked at him.

“You really don't remember me?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“That was the point.””

I kept my weapon aimed at his chest.

“Step into the light.””

He did.

He was perhaps forty years old.

Dark hair.

A narrow scar beneath one eye.

Same height as Jonathan had probably been in his prime.

And on his neck, just beneath his collar, was a tiny tattoo.

A naval identification mark.

Not one used by any branch I knew.

I looked at Jonathan.

“How many children did you have?””

His answer was barely audible.

“Three.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You told me two.””

“I know.””

“Who is he?””

Jonathan looked at the stranger.

“My oldest son.””

Adrian smiled.

“Nice to meet you, Daniel.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Why don't I remember you?””

“Because our father erased me first.””

Keller stepped past me.

“Adrian.””

The stranger looked at him.

“You're late.””

Keller's jaw tightened.

“You were supposed to stay away from them.””

“I did.””

“You were supposed to stay dead.””

Adrian laughed.

“So was Michael.””

The lights flickered again.

A distant explosion shook the tunnel.

Reed looked toward the basement.

“They breached the main house.””

Adrian nodded.

“I know.””

“How?””

He tapped his ear.

“Because I built the system.””

Jonathan stared at him.

“You've been inside the network.””

“For years.””

Daniel looked from Adrian to his father.

“Why?””

Adrian answered without hesitation.

“Because our father built a prison and called it a family.””

Jonathan’s expression hardened.

“Don't rewrite history.””

“History doesn't need rewriting.””

Adrian looked at me.

“It needs witnesses.””

I lowered my weapon slightly.

“Then start talking.””

He studied me.

“You’re still exactly what Michael said.””

“What did he say?””

“That you'd rather die than trust the wrong person.””

I didn't move.

“How does Michael know you?””

Adrian's expression changed.

“He found me.””

“Where?””

“In the program.””

My stomach tightened.

“The memory program.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“But you said you were never in the military.””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“I wasn't.””

He rolled up his sleeve.

The same surgical scar ran from his elbow toward his shoulder.

“They didn't need me in uniform.””

I looked at Jonathan.

“You volunteered all three sons.””

Jonathan shook his head.

“Not Adrian.””

The older man laughed.

“I volunteered myself.””

“Why?””

“To get revenge.””

Reed kept watch over the tunnel entrance.

“Revenge for what?””

Adrian's eyes settled on him.

“For Michael.””

Daniel's face went pale.

“What happened to him?””

“You know what happened.””

“I don't.””

“Then remember.””

Adrian walked toward him.

I stepped between them.

“Don't.””

He stopped.

Then reached into his coat.

Keller immediately aimed at him.

Adrian pulled out a small photograph.

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

Three boys stood beside a swimming pool.

Daniel.

Michael.

Adrian.

All three young.

All three smiling.

Jonathan stood behind them.

Susan stood beside him.

It was a family.

A normal one.

Almost.

Except Adrian's face had been scratched out with a black marker.

Not once.

Again and again.

As if someone had attacked the paper.

“What happened to this photo?””

Adrian's voice was quiet.

“After they decided I didn't exist.””

Daniel took it from me.

His fingers trembled.

“I remember this.””

Everyone went still.

“What?”” I asked.

Daniel touched the corner.

“The pool.””

Adrian smiled.

“What else?””

“A red bicycle.””

“Your bike.””

“Michael broke the chain.””

Adrian nodded.

Daniel's breathing quickened.

“You pushed him.””

“He pushed me first.””

“I remember Mom yelling.””

Susan started crying.

Daniel looked at her.

“You remember.””

She couldn't answer.

He turned to Jonathan.

“You made me forget my own brother.””

Jonathan's shoulders dropped.

“I thought I was saving you.””

Daniel laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

A gunshot echoed from the tunnel.

Reed ducked.

“Contact!””

Everyone moved.

A round struck the wall where Adrian's head had been.

He didn't flinch.

He pulled a pistol from his coat and fired three controlled shots into the darkness.

A scream answered.

Then silence.

Reed stared.

“You're good.””

Adrian shrugged.

“You'd be surprised what people teach you when they don't intend to let you leave.””

He looked at me.

“Graybird.””

“Stop calling me that.””

“That's who you became.””

“No.””

I lowered my weapon.

“That was who they needed me to be.””

Adrian smiled.

“Then you'll understand.””

He pointed down the tunnel.

“There's a room at the end.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

“What’s in it?””

“Everything.””

The word made my pulse jump.

“Everything what?””

“The original mission files.””

Daniel frowned.

“The crash?””

“All of it.””

I followed Adrian down the tunnel.

Jonathan moved behind me.

Keller stayed beside Reed.

No one trusted anyone.

It was the safest arrangement possible.

The tunnel opened into a concrete chamber.

One table.

One chair.

Three metal cabinets.

And a wall-sized map.

I recognized the Black Sea immediately.

Red circles covered the coastline.

Blue lines marked flight paths.

Three aircraft.

Not two.

Three.

I walked closer.

My eyes moved over the dates.

Seven years ago.

The night of the crash.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A fourth aircraft.

Hidden under a layer of red ink.

I whispered, “There were four.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

Jonathan said nothing.

“What was the fourth?””

“A surveillance platform.””

“Who flew it?””

Adrian looked at me.

“You did.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

“You don't remember.””

“Because they erased it.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the map again.

There was another name beside the fourth aircraft.

*Pilot: Mara Vale.*

But next to it was a second name.

*Observer: Daniel Mercer.*

I turned.

Daniel stared at the map.

“I flew with you.””

“You weren't a pilot.””

“No.””

Adrian pointed to the legend.

“Observer. Intelligence liaison.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then memory hit him.

He staggered backward.

I caught him.

His breathing became ragged.

“What do you see?””

He whispered,

“Moonlight.””

I waited.

“Water.””

“Go on.””

“A deck.””

“Whose?””

“An aircraft carrier.””

I looked at Jonathan.

He nodded.

Daniel's face twisted.

“There was a briefing.””

“Yes.””

“You were there.””

I looked at him.

“What did I say?””

Daniel stared through me.

“You said someone had changed the target.””

My chest tightened.

“I did.””

“You wanted to abort.””

Jonathan interrupted.

“You couldn't.””

Daniel turned on him.

“Why?””

“Because the target was already moving.””

“Who was the target?””

Adrian answered.

“Michael.””

Silence.

I looked at him.

“Why would Michael be the target?””

“Because Michael had the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Adrian opened the first cabinet.

Inside were dozens of files.

He removed one.

Then another.

Then a third.

He placed them on the table.

“Operations.””

“Black projects.””

“Unauthorized weapons testing.””

“Memory manipulation.””

Then he placed one final folder down.

It was thinner than the others.

But the label was typed in red.

*PROJECT GRAYBIRD.*

I stared at it.

Adrian pushed it toward me.

“This is why you were erased.””

I opened it.

The first page contained my photograph.

Not a photograph from my service record.

A medical image.

Then another.

Then a report.

My hands went numb.

*Subject demonstrates exceptional resistance to memory suppression.*

I read the next line.

*Recommended use: operational recall anchor.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian answered.

“You were never the experiment.””

I stared at him.

“Then what was I?””

“The control.””

I couldn't breathe.

“They tested the procedure on everyone around you.””

Daniel went pale.

“Michael.””

“Yes.””

“Adrian.””

“Yes.””

I turned another page.

There were photographs of me with both brothers.

At the facility.

At training.

At meetings.

The dates stretched back years.

Then I reached the final page.

A handwritten note.

Not typed.

Not official.

Written in blue ink.

*Graybird remembers everything. Do not allow contact with Michael.*

I looked at Jonathan.

“You knew.””

He whispered, “I knew enough.””

“You knew Michael survived.””

“I suspected.””

“You knew Adrian survived.””

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“I knew.””

“You let me believe both were dead.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Before he could answer, the lights went out.

The chamber fell black.

Then a red dot appeared on the wall.

A laser sight.

Another appeared.

Then another.

Reed shouted, “Down!””

Gunfire ripped through the room.

Metal cabinets exploded with sparks.

Adrian shoved Daniel to the ground.

Jonathan pulled Susan behind the table.

I dropped beside Leah.

Someone shouted from the tunnel.

“Mercer!””

The voice was female.

Familiar.

I looked up.

Elena stepped through the doorway.

Blood covered one side of her coat.

She raised her weapon toward Adrian.

“Move away from him.””

Adrian slowly stood.

“Elena.””

She stared at him.

“You shouldn't be alive.””

He smiled.

“Neither should you.””

She pointed the gun at his chest.

“You killed my team.””

“No.””

“You gave them our coordinates.””

“No.””

“You were the leak.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“I was the bait.””

Elena looked at me.

“Graybird.””

“Don't.””

“Listen to me.””

Her hands were shaking.

“The flight recorder isn't the evidence.””

I frowned.

“Then what is?””

Elena swallowed.

“It's a person.””

Nobody moved.

She lowered her weapon slightly.

“Someone who knows everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Michael's voice came from the radio on the table.

“She's right.””

The radio crackled.

His voice became clearer.

“There was never a recorder.””

Adrian turned toward the speaker.

“Michael?””

A pause.

Then:

“You've been protecting the wrong person.””

I felt a cold certainty settle over me.

“Who?””

The radio hissed.

Michael answered.

“Your father.””

Jonathan stopped breathing.

Then the tunnel door behind us slammed shut.

And from the other side, a man's voice said,

“Don't let Graybird leave alive.”” :::
