Chapter 7: The Brother Who Survived
“Michael Mercer is the man standing outside your house right now.””
For a second, nobody breathed.
Then the loudspeaker crackled again.
“Thirty seconds.””
Daniel stared at Keller.
“You're lying.””
Keller didn't blink.
“I wish I were.””
Jonathan looked toward the dark road.
“Reed.””
“I heard him.””
“Get everyone back inside.””
Reed motioned for Susan and Leah to move.
I grabbed Daniel's arm.
“Come on.””
He didn't move.
“Mara…”
“Daniel, now.””
“My brother is alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew?””
“No.””
His eyes searched mine.
“You swear?””
“I swear.””
He nodded once.
Then we moved.
The five of us raced back toward the hidden entrance.
Gunfire erupted again.
Bullets tore through the trees.
Reed returned fire while Jonathan ushered Susan and Leah through the doorway.
Keller stayed outside.
I turned.
He was standing in the rain, completely exposed.
“You're not coming?””
He looked at me.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael asked me to make sure you reached the basement.””
My chest tightened.
“You've been working for him?””
“No.””
“Then why protect him?””
Keller's expression hardened.
“I’m protecting what’s left of your unit.””
A bullet struck the tree beside him.
He disappeared into the darkness.
I pulled the door shut.
Jonathan locked it.
Daniel stood at the center of the command room, breathing hard.
“Tell me everything.””
Jonathan looked at him.
“I will.””
“No.””
Daniel pointed toward the screens.
“You're going to tell me now.””
Susan began crying again.
Leah put both hands over her mouth.
Jonathan looked older than he had ten minutes ago.
Not seventy.
Ancient.
He walked to the central console.
“Michael was born eleven minutes before you.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Twin?””
Jonathan nodded.
“You never told me.””
“We were told not to.””
“By whom?””
“Naval Intelligence.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So what? They decided one of us didn't exist?””
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Because Michael had a genetic marker they were interested in.””
Daniel frowned.
“What marker?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“One associated with resistance to a neurological conditioning protocol.””
Everything inside me went still.
“The memory program.””
Jonathan nodded.
“They weren't just suppressing memories.””
He looked at Daniel.
“They were testing how to erase them.””
Daniel's face went white.
“On Michael?””
“On both of you.””
Susan shook her head.
“I thought the treatments were for migraines.””
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“I know.””
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the bunker.
“You let them do that to my children.””
Jonathan didn't defend himself.
“I thought I could control it.””
Susan's voice broke.
“You couldn't even control dinner.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Why don't I remember Michael?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Because the procedure worked.””
I felt sick.
“And Michael?””
“He remembered.””
Daniel stepped backward.
“How?””
“Because he fought it.””
A low hum came from the monitor.
One screen flickered.
Then another.
The central display switched from static to a live camera feed.
A man stood outside the house.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Rain dripping from his hair.
He slowly lifted his face toward the camera.
Daniel stared.
His own face stared back.
Older.
Harder.
A thin scar cut across the jaw.
But the eyes—
Green.
Exactly like Daniel's.
Daniel whispered, “Michael.””
The man outside smiled.
The loudspeaker came alive.
“Hello, little brother.””
Daniel stepped toward the screen.
“You're alive.””
Michael laughed softly.
“You were supposed to remember me.””
“I don't.””
“I know.””
“Why did Dad tell me you were dead?””
Michael looked toward the camera.
“Because he had to.””
Jonathan spoke.
“Michael.””
The image shifted slightly.
Michael turned his head toward the speaker.
“Father.””
Jonathan's voice was low.
“Come inside.””
Michael smiled.
“You still give orders.””
“You're surrounded.””
“No.””
Michael glanced toward the darkness.
“You're surrounded.””
I stepped toward the monitor.
“Why are you here?””
His eyes moved directly to me.
“Hello, Graybird.””
I felt a chill.
“How do you know me?””
“I watched you die.””
“I didn't.””
“I know.””
His smile faded.
“They lied to me too.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Who?””
Michael looked at Jonathan.
“Ask him.””
Daniel turned.
“Dad?””
Jonathan slowly sat down.
“There was a second extraction team.””
My pulse jumped.
“After my crash.””
“Yes.””
“Who sent them?””
“Michael.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
Michael nodded.
“You were the second extraction team.””
Daniel's face twisted in confusion.
“I was twenty-seven.””
“You were trained for the operation.””
“I was never military.””
“You didn't need to be.””
I understood.
“Oh my God.””
Michael's eyes moved to me.
“Exactly.””
I stepped toward the monitor.
“They used Daniel as a civilian asset.””
Michael nodded.
“They used both of us.””
Jonathan rubbed his forehead.
“They needed someone with no military footprint.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Then why me?””
“Because you're my son.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“It was to them.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“They believed family would make him loyal.””
Daniel laughed.
“So they made me watch my brother die.””
Michael's expression hardened.
“They made you watch me disappear.””
Jonathan spoke quietly.
“You weren't supposed to see him.””
“But I did.””
“Yes.””
“And after that?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
Michael did.
“After that, they erased you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Suddenly he grabbed the edge of the console.
“I remember.””
Everyone froze.
He breathed faster.
“Mara.””
I moved beside him.
“What do you remember?””
“A hangar.””
“Go on.””
“Bright lights.””
His face tightened.
“Someone was shouting.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Try.””
He opened his eyes.
“Mom.””
Susan began sobbing.
“I was holding something.””
“What?””
“A metal case.””
I looked at the black drive in my hand.
“The recorder?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His breathing became uneven.
“Something smaller.””
“A key?””
He nodded.
“Black.””
I looked at the B-17 key on the table.
“Like this?””
Daniel stared at it.
Then his expression changed.
“Yes.””
Jonathan stood suddenly.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel pointed at the key.
“It was in the case.””
I looked at him.
“You've seen it before?””
Daniel nodded.
“Seven years ago.””
Michael's voice came through the speaker.
“Now you remember.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“What happened that night?””
Michael's face went cold.
“I was shot.””
Daniel froze.
“By who?””
Michael's eyes moved toward Jonathan.
“Your father.””
The room exploded into silence.
Jonathan didn't deny it.
Susan turned toward him.
“You shot our son?””
Jonathan's voice cracked.
“I shot him to make them believe he was dead.””
Daniel stared.
“You shot me?””
“No.””
“Michael.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
Michael touched the scar along his jaw.
“Your father shot me.””
He pulled his collar aside.
A second scar appeared beneath his ear.
“He needed blood.””
Jonathan whispered, “I had seconds.””
“You had a choice.””
“I chose you.””
“And left me.””
“I thought you were dead.””
Michael smiled bitterly.
“You always think you're the hero.””
A heavy impact shook the bunker door.
Reed checked the lock.
“They're trying to breach.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Mara, how long?””
“Depends on the door.””
“Give me your best estimate.””
“Three minutes.””
Reed swore.
“Maybe two.””
Michael's voice came through the speaker again.
“There's another entrance.””
I turned toward the screen.
“Where?””
“Behind the old wine cellar.””
Jonathan looked at his wife.
Susan nodded.
“The wall.””
I understood.
“They built another tunnel.””
“Yes.””
“Where does it lead?””
Michael smiled.
“To the marina.””
I looked at the black drive.
“The old reserve facility.””
“B-17.””
He said the words almost gently.
“Locker B-17.””
Daniel stepped toward the screen.
“What’s inside?””
Michael's face became serious.
“The original recorder.””
I frowned.
“I have the drive.””
“That isn't the recorder.””
“What is it?””
“The key to the recorder.””
I looked down at the tiny black drive.
“Then what's on this?””
Michael didn't answer immediately.
When he did, his voice was almost a whisper.
“The names.””
“Whose names?””
“The people who ordered the crash.””
Jonathan suddenly looked toward the ceiling.
I heard it too.
Footsteps.
Above us.
Michael continued.
“And there's one name you haven't seen yet.””
I looked at him.
“Whose?””
He smiled.
“Your own.””
The bunker lights went out.
Total darkness.
Then a red emergency light flickered on.
Jonathan looked around.
The rear wall began to slide open.
Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Reed raised his weapon.
“Move.””
I grabbed Daniel's hand.
But before we entered, the monitor flickered one last time.
Michael appeared again.
Only his face this time.
He looked directly at Daniel.
“Brother.””
Daniel stopped.
Michael's voice softened.
“Don't trust the man who comes with Keller.””
The screen went black.
Reed looked at me.
“Keller?””
I nodded.
“He's coming.””
A man's footsteps echoed from the tunnel behind us.
Slow.
Steady.
Getting closer.
Then a voice called from the darkness.
“Mara.””
I knew it immediately.
Keller.
But another voice answered from somewhere deeper inside the tunnel.
“She's not the one you need to be afraid of.””
I turned.
A silhouette stood at the far end.
And when the emergency light caught his face, I realized Michael had left out one very important detail.
May you like
There were two brothers standing in the tunnel.
And Daniel wasn't one of them.
