Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH CLAIRE HID

Detective Marquez stared at me.

"You are certain?"

"Claire was protecting Mia," I said. "She wrote a name that would keep everyone guessing while she hid the real truth. Julian Voss worked at my firm. He was here. But the dates do not match. And the blood type... Claire wrote that Mia's blood matches neither of us. She did not say it matches Julian. She said it was impossible."

"So who is the father?"

I pulled out my phone and showed her the note—specifically the date Claire had written beneath the name.

"The date Mia was conceived. That was the night of the accident. The night Claire was brought to the hospital unconscious. The night she was alone. The night she said she could not remember what happened."

Detective Marquez went pale.

"Are you saying..."

"Someone took advantage of her," I said, my voice trembling with rage. "Someone at the hospital. Someone who had access. Someone who knew she would never remember. And then... when she began to suspect... someone altered the records. Someone sealed the files. Someone made sure the truth would stay buried."

"Dr. Thorne?" she asked.

"Claire trusted him," I said. "But she was afraid of someone else. Someone higher up. Someone with far more power."

I looked at the name Claire had written at the very bottom of the note—scrawled so faintly I had missed it until now.

*If anything happens to me... look to the hospital administrator. Arthur Hale. He was there that night. He signed the admission forms. And he has been protecting the truth ever since.*

Detective Marquez pulled out her notebook and began writing rapidly.

"Arthur Hale," she repeated. "I know him. He is well-respected. Powerful. Connected."

"Which is exactly why Claire was afraid," I said. "She knew no one would believe her. So she hid the truth. She let me believe Mia was mine. She let everyone believe Julian Voss was the father. Because she knew... if Arthur Hale discovered she knew... he would silence her forever."

"She was murdered?" Marquez asked quietly.

"Her illness was sudden," I said. "Untreated. Complications no one expected. And Arthur Hale was her physician... before Dr. Thorne took over."

Silence stretched between us.

"We need proof," Marquez said.

"We have the note," I said. "And we have Vanessa. She went straight to Arthur Hale. She knew the truth. She worked for him. She helped him cover it up."

Marquez stood up.

"I will put surveillance on Hale. And I will find Vanessa. But Adrian... be careful. If this is true... you are not just fighting one woman. You are fighting a man with power, money, and everything to lose."

I drove home in silence. When I walked inside, Mia was still asleep. I sat beside her bed and held her hand. Everything had changed. The secret was not just about who her father was. It was about a crime committed against her mother. A cover-up that had cost Claire her life. And now Arthur Hale and Vanessa were hunting together.

I pulled out my phone and called Dr. Thorne.

"Adrian?" he answered, his voice alert.

"Arthur Hale," I said. "Claire wrote his name. Is it true?"

Dr. Thorne was silent for a long time.

"I was afraid she would find out," he said finally. "Arthur Hale has been a powerful man for decades. When Claire told me her suspicions... I told her to be careful. I did not realize how close she was to the truth."

"And you think he is responsible?"

"I think," Dr. Thorne said gravely, "that Arthur Hale has done things he cannot afford to have exposed. And I think... that is why Vanessa was placed in your life. To watch you. To watch Claire. To make sure the truth never surfaced."

I ended the call and looked down at Mia.

"Whatever happens," I whispered, "I will protect you. I will find justice for your mother. And I will make sure the truth comes out. No matter who tries to stop us."
