Chapter 5 - THE SECRET IN THE MEDICAL RECORDS

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table with the full note spread out before me. I had taped the fragment Vanessa had found back into place, so now I held everything Claire had written. Every word felt heavier now that I knew Vanessa was hunting for the same answers.
Claire had written: Find the original birth certificate. Find the hospital records. Find out who was there that day.
And beneath that, in faint, trembling handwriting: The doctor who delivered her. He signed both copies. But the names did not match. I saw it once. Then the records were sealed.
I sat back. Dr. Elias Thorne. That was the name Claire had written. He had delivered Mia. He had been Claire's physician for years. And he had sealed the records shortly after her death.
I pulled out my phone and searched his name. He was still practicing. Still at the same hospital. Highly respected. Widely published.
Claire had trusted him. And then she had suspected him.
I looked at the clock. It was early. I could still reach him at his office.
I called. The receptionist told me he was leaving for the day but might see me briefly if I arrived within twenty minutes.
I drove to the hospital, my mind racing. What had Dr. Thorne done? Had he changed the records? And why?
I was shown into his office. Dr. Thorne was an older man with silver hair and kind, tired eyes. He gestured for me to sit.
"Adrian," he said gently. "It has been a long time. How is Mia?"
"She is recovering," I said. "Doctor... I need to ask you about the day she was born."
Dr. Thorne sat back. His expression remained calm, but his fingers tightened slightly on his desk.
"Why do you ask now?"
"Claire left something behind," I said. "A note. She believed the records were altered. She believed the birth certificate was wrong."
Dr. Thorne went very still.
"Claire was ill," he said quietly. "Toward the end, she became confused. She worried about many things."
"She wrote down names," I said. "Dates. Discrepancies she saw herself. She said you signed both copies... but the names did not match."
Dr. Thorne looked down at his hands. He was silent for a long time.
"Adrian," he said finally. "I have kept a secret for seven years. A secret I was begged to keep. But Claire... she was always too clever to be fully deceived."
He stood up and walked to a locked cabinet in the corner of the room. He opened it, pulled out a thin file, and placed it on the desk between us.
"This is the original record," he said. "The one that was never filed."
I leaned forward. On the page, in Dr. Thorne's handwriting, were the details of Mia's birth. But where the father's name should have been... it was blank.
"I do not know who the biological father was," Dr. Thorne said. "Claire came to me months before the birth. She was frightened. She said she had made a terrible mistake. That she had been with someone... and she did not know how to tell you. She loved you, Adrian. She said you were the best thing that ever happened to her. But she was afraid... that if you knew the truth... you would leave her."
My heart ached.
"So she let me believe..."
"She let you believe Mia was yours," Dr. Thorne said. "Because she wanted you to be. She wanted you to raise her. To love her. To be her father in every way that mattered. And then... she discovered something else. Something that terrified her."
Dr. Thorne turned the page.
"Blood type," he said. "Mia's blood type matches neither of yours. Not yours. Not Claire's. It is impossible. Claire did the math. She realized... the baby could not have been conceived when she thought. Or by whom she thought."
I stared at him.
"Then whose child is she?"
Dr. Thorne looked at me gravely.
"That is the secret, Adrian. Claire realized someone had deceived her. Someone had lied to her about what happened that night. And then... someone altered the hospital records to cover it up. Someone with access. Someone who had reason to hide the truth."
"Who?" I demanded.
Dr. Thorne shook his head.
"I do not know. But shortly before Claire died... she told me she had figured it out. She said the person who did this... was someone we both knew. Someone close to the family. And she said... that person would kill to keep it hidden."
A chill ran through me.
"She told you who it was?"
"She wrote the name down," Dr. Thorne said. "And she gave it to me for safekeeping. But someone broke into my office weeks after her funeral. The file was stolen. And the digital records were wiped clean."
He leaned forward.
"Only one person had access to everything. The hospital system. My office. Claire's files. And your home."
My breath caught.
"Vanessa?"
Dr. Thorne nodded gravely.
"She worked here, Adrian. She was an administrator. She had full access to every record. And she started here... exactly three months before Mia was born."
The pieces fell together with sickening clarity. Vanessa had been at the hospital. She had seen the records. She had known the truth. She had destroyed the files. And then she had come after me. Into my home. Into my daughter's life.
She had not loved me. She had been hunting for something. And she had found it in that dress.
I stood up, my legs unsteady.
"Where is the name now?" I asked. "The one Claire gave you."
Dr. Thorne opened his desk drawer and pulled out a small sealed envelope.
"Claire made me promise to give this to you only if her warning came true. If Vanessa returned. If she began to threaten you."
He handed it to me.
"Be careful, Adrian. Whoever Mia's biological father is... Vanessa knows. And she intends to use it to destroy you all."
I stepped out of the hospital into the cool night air, clutching the envelope in my hand. Everything had changed. This was no longer just about a dress. Or an engagement ended. This was about secrets stolen from the dead. About a child whose very identity had been rewritten.
