Chapter 3 - THE FIRST CLUE

The next morning, Mia woke up quiet. She came into the kitchen, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit, and climbed into her chair without saying a word. Her cheek was almost healed, but the memory lingered in the way she kept her eyes downcast, in the way she flinched when I moved too quickly.

I set a plate of toast and fruit before her.

"How are you feeling today?" I asked gently.

Mia picked at her food.

"Will Vanessa come back?"

My heart twisted.

"No," I told her firmly. "She will not come back. You are safe here."

Mia looked up, her eyes large and uncertain.

"Are you sure?"

"I am absolutely sure."

She nodded, but she did not look convinced.

After breakfast, I brought the dress out from where I had hidden it in the hall closet. I laid it across the dining table and sat down beside it. Mia came and stood close, watching me run my fingers along the cuts.

"Can it be fixed?" she whispered.

"I think so," I said. "There are people who are very good at sewing. We will find someone who can make it beautiful again. It might not look exactly the same... but it will still be your mother's dress."

Mia touched the torn edge gently.

"Mommy put a piece of paper inside," she said suddenly.

I looked up.

"A piece of paper?"

"Mhm," Mia said. "She wrote something and sewed it inside. Right here." She placed her small hand over the bodice. "She told me. She said whenever I wore it, she would be right there with me."

My throat tightened. Claire had never told me that.

"Did she write what it said?" I asked softly.

Mia shook her head.

"She said it was a secret. For me to find when I was big enough."

I stared at the dress. At the place Mia had touched. If there was something sewn inside... Vanessa had cut right through it.

I picked up the dress carefully. The cuts were long and deep. One slice ran straight across the bodice—exactly where Mia said the note lay.

"I am going to be very careful," I told Mia. "I want to see what your mother wrote."

I fetched small, sharp scissors and sat down. Mia pulled a chair close and watched in silence. I worked slowly, separating the layers of fabric where the stitches had been cut, being as gentle as I possibly could.

And then I saw it.

A folded scrap of paper, tucked carefully between the lining and the outer fabric, soaked through slightly but still legible.

I pulled it out and unfolded it.

Claire's handwriting. Slanted, elegant, familiar. My hands trembled as I read it.

*To my dearest Mia,*

*If you are reading this, you are wearing your dress. I hope you feel beautiful. I hope you know how very much I love you. But there is something else you must know. Something I must tell you before it is too late.*

*There is a secret, my sweet girl. A secret that has been kept from you and from your father. Please do not be angry with me. Please understand that I did what I thought was best. But the truth belongs to you.*

*Your father... Adrian... he loves you more than anything. But he is not your biological father.*

The words blurred. I sat perfectly still, staring at the ink, certain I had misread.

*Adrian does not know. I never told him. I could not. He would have given Mia everything anyway. He would have loved her no less. But there are things... things that make this safer. I wrote the name down. And other details. On the back of this paper. Hide it well. Keep it safe. And when the time comes... tell Adrian. He deserves the truth.*

I turned the paper over.

And there, written in Claire's careful handwriting, was a name. And a date. And a note that made the room spin.

*Mia was born with blood that does not match either of us. The doctor said it was impossible. But I saw the records myself. And then I found the letter. The one from the hospital. The one that changed everything.*

My breath caught.

*Adrian was never told. He believes everything is fine. But it is not. There was a switch. Or a mistake. Or something far worse. Someone changed the records. Someone who had access. Someone who stood to gain.*

*I was going to find out. But then I got sick. And now I must leave this to you. Find the original birth certificate. Find the hospital records. Find out who was there that day. And then... be careful. Because whoever did this... they are still watching.*

I sat there for a very long time. Mia stood beside me, watching my face.

"Daddy?" she asked softly. "What did she say?"

I folded the paper carefully and put it in my pocket. My mind was racing. Everything I had believed... everything I had taken for granted... suddenly shifted.

Claire had suspected something. She had known. She had hidden this note inside the dress. And then Vanessa had cut the dress—right where the note was hidden.

Had she known?

Had Vanessa found out somehow? Had she destroyed the dress because she knew what was inside?

I looked up and met Mia's eyes.

"Your mother wrote something very important," I told her, my voice steadying with effort. "Something we need to keep secret. Just for a little while. Can you do that?"

Mia nodded solemnly.

"Just between us?"

"Just between us."

"Okay," she said. "I promise."

I stood up and walked to the window. The morning sun was bright, but I felt cold all over. Vanessa had said something on my porch the night before. You do not know everything.

Had she known? Had she been threatening me with this?

I pulled out my phone and turned it back on. There were more messages from Vanessa. But one, sent just before midnight, stopped my heart.

*Funny, isn't it? That dress was the only place she could hide things. Good thing I decided to cut it open. Now tell me, Adrian... how much do you actually know about the daughter you are raising?*

The phone slipped in my hand.

May you like

Vanessa had known. She had cut the dress open on purpose. She had been looking for something. And she had found it.
