Chapter 9 - THE PURSUIT

By sunrise, we had a plan. Dad would deliver the evidence to the police—autopsy report, ledger, Sarah’s notes, everything. Emma and I would remain at the cottage under guard until arrests were made.
But by mid-morning, Dad called again. His voice was tight with alarm.
“Vanessa knows. Someone tipped her off. She and Henderson are gone. Their homes are empty. Bank accounts drained.”
“How?” Emma demanded. “No one knew but us.”
“I don’t know. But she left a message—delivered to my office by courier. For Lily.”
My blood ran cold. “What does it say?”
“Stay away from what is not yours. I will not be threatened by a dead woman’s words or a child’s games. If you want the rest of what Sarah hid… come and find me. But come alone.”
Dad paused.
“She has something, Emma. Something else Sarah hid. Something she took from the main house yesterday while we were gone. She left the cottage untouched… but she ransacked Lily’s bedroom. She tore the house apart looking for the ledger.”
“And she found something else.”
“A final envelope. Sealed. Marked ‘To be opened only upon my death.’” Dad breathed out slowly. “Vanessa has it. She says it contains the one thing that will destroy us all.”
“Then we go to the police now,” Emma said. “With everything we have—”
“Too late. She is already gone. And she threatens to destroy the evidence unless we meet her demands.” Dad’s voice dropped low. “She wants the ledger. In exchange for the envelope. And she will only speak to Lily.”
“Absolutely not,” Emma said instantly. “She is dangerous. She killed Sarah. She will not hesitate to harm a child.”
“I know. But Sarah’s final envelope… whatever it contains… may be the only thing more dangerous than the ledger itself. If Vanessa destroys it… we may never know the full truth.” He paused. “And if Sarah went to such lengths to hide it… we cannot let it fall into Vanessa’s hands alone.”
“I will go,” I said.
Both adults fell silent.
“Lily, no—” Emma began.
“Mommy left the clues for me. She wrote the letter to me. She trusted me to understand.” I lifted my chin. “Vanessa expects me. She will not hurt me if she needs the ledger.”
“Lily—”
“Dad, Mommy said trust only the ledger. But she also said there was something else. Something she sealed away. If Vanessa has it… I need to know what it says.”
A long silence stretched across the line. Then Dad spoke, heavy with resignation.
“We do this my way. Strictly. You stay in sight at all times. We have her tracked. We have police standing by, concealed. You are bait. Nothing more. Do not approach her. Do not touch anything she offers. Do not agree to anything until we have the envelope safely in hand.”

“I promise.”
“Then prepare. We leave in one hour.”
