Chapter 14 - THE ENEMY INSIDE

The realization changed everything. Marcus—my godfather, Dad’s best friend, the man who had held me at my baptism—was the hidden hand guiding Vanessa all along. Every piece fell into place: the access to medical records, the help navigating legal loopholes, the information on when Sarah was alone, the quiet reassurances that Vanessa was trustworthy.

He had been feeding us lies while handing Vanessa every tool she needed to destroy us.

“Sarah could not prove it,” Emma said. “That is why she hid everything. She knew Marcus would destroy any evidence he found. So she wrote the truth in a ledger… and entrusted it to Lily.”

Dad paced the room. “If Marcus is involved… then he has been watching us. Waiting. He knows we have the ledger. He knows Henderson is in custody. He knows Vanessa has been arrested.”

“And he knows Vanessa has remained silent,” Emma said. “So he believes himself safe.”

“Which makes him dangerous,” I said. “He has nothing to lose but everything to gain by silencing us before we can prove his involvement.”

That night, Dad made a choice. We would pretend to know nothing. We would carry on as normal—until we could gather enough evidence to arrest him alongside the others.

“Vanessa refused to name him,” Dad said. “Perhaps she believes he will still save her. Perhaps she believes he will make a deal and set her free. We can use that.”

The next morning, Dad visited Vanessa again. Alone. Behind glass.

He placed a copy of Sarah’s ledger on the counter between them. He opened it to the page where Marcus’s name was circled.

Vanessa went pale.

“You protected him,” Dad said quietly. “Even after everything he told you to do. Even after you learned all of it was built on lies.”

“He promised,” she whispered. “He promised he would find me a lawyer. He promised he would prove I was manipulated. That I was a victim.”

“Vanessa, look at me.” Dad leaned closer. “Marcus has not called. He has not sent a lawyer. He has not asked about you once. He is already erasing every trace of his involvement. He intends to let you take all the blame. All of it.”

She hesitated. “He said… he said if I stayed silent… he would ensure nothing could touch me.”

“Your mother lied to you. Marcus Henderson lied to you. And now Marcus Voss is lying to you too.” Dad tapped the ledger. “Sarah knew. She wrote it all down. Payments. Meetings. Phone logs. Everything. He used you. And now he intends to bury you.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “What do you want?”

“Tell me everything. Every instruction. Every payment. Every meeting. And testify against him. In exchange… I will speak for you at sentencing. I will tell the judge you cooperated. That you were manipulated. That you were not the mastermind.” Dad paused. “Do it for Sarah. She believed you could still be saved. Prove her right.”

Vanessa stared at him for a long time. Then slowly, trembling, she nodded.

By afternoon, the full scope of Marcus’s treachery began to unfold. Vanessa gave dates, times, places, amounts. She told us how Marcus had found her—alone, bitter, searching for answers about her birth father. He had told her a carefully crafted story: that her father had abandoned her, that Sarah had stolen everything, that Dad was weak and easily manipulated. He had given her the perfect lie… and then he had handed her the means to destroy us.

“He said once Sarah was gone,” Vanessa whispered, “once the trust was overturned… the three of us would share everything. Me as Adrian’s wife. Him as business partner. Equal control.”

Dad closed his eyes. “And then?”

“And then… he intended to remove you too,” Vanessa said, voice barely audible. “He said grief makes people careless. Accidents happen.”

Dad stepped back, face pale. “He intended to kill me.”

“Once he controlled Lily’s inheritance… once he controlled me… he would have ruled everything. And I… I would have been blamed. Just as he planned.”

Dad left the detention center in silence. He drove without speaking, hands gripping the wheel so tightly his knuckles showed white.

Marcus had been his closest friend for twenty years. They had built their empire together. They had married within months of each other. Their children had been born weeks apart. And all along… Marcus had been waiting. Plotting. Calculating.

“By tomorrow morning,” Dad said quietly, “we will have enough evidence to arrest him. Vanessa’s testimony. The ledger. The payments. Everything tied together.”

But Marcus moved faster.

That evening, as we entered the front gates, the security guard ran out waving his arms. He handed Dad a folded note found pinned to the main door. No signature. No name. Written in haste:

“Tell Vanessa to stay silent. Or the child never sees morning.”

Dad crumpled the paper in his fist. His face turned terrifyingly calm.

“Marcus is here,” he said. “Inside the house.”
