Chapter 20 - THE STAR AT THE TOP

Summer arrived warm and golden. The garden bloomed in riotous color—roses climbing the trellis, lavender filling the air, sunlight spilling over everything.

On my seventh birthday, we gathered beneath the tree. Not the Christmas tree, but the great oak in the center of the lawn, draped in ribbons and flowers. Friends came. Neighbors came. Those who had stood by us through everything.

Dad stood and raised his glass.

“Today we celebrate Lily,” he said, voice clear and steady. “Seven years. A lifetime of wisdom wrapped in a child’s heart. Sarah gave us many gifts. But none greater than her.”

Applause broke out. I looked up at him, smiling.

After the guests departed, we climbed the hill behind the house—Dad, Emma, and I. We carried flowers and a small box. At the crest, beneath blue sky and drifting clouds, we laid Sarah’s final notebook to rest beneath a stone carved simply: SARAH — SHE SPOKE THE TRUTH.

I placed a single white rose upon the earth.

“We found it all, Mommy,” I whispered. “Every secret. Every lie. Every truth.”

The wind rustled the grass. For a moment, it felt as though she stood beside us—proud, calm, at peace.

That evening, I stood on the roof terrace watching stars appear one by one. Dad joined me, wrapping a shawl around my shoulders.

“Do you ever think about what might still be hidden?” I asked him quietly. “What Sarah could not uncover?”

Dad looked out across the darkening valley.

“Some secrets remain secrets,” he said gently. “Not because they are powerful… but because they no longer matter. We have justice. We have peace. We have each other. And that… is victory enough.”

He turned me gently toward him.

“Sarah knew that. She did not fight so we could spend our lives hunting shadows. She fought so we could live freely in the light.”

I touched the locket at my throat. Cool gold against my skin. Inside, her face smiled back at me.

“Everything she gave us… it was never just about the house or the money or the truth,” I said. “It was about giving me a place to stand. A place where no one could ever make me feel small or unwanted.”

Dad nodded, eyes glistening.

“She gave you home. She gave you strength. And she gave you her heart.” He squeezed my hand. “And nothing… nothing in this world… can ever take that away.”

I looked up at the sky. One star burned brighter than all the rest, high above the treetops, steady and true.

“Sarah always said to put the star at the very top,” I said.

Dad smiled. “And you did.”

I leaned against him, watching the light shine down. Somewhere, Vanessa sat in a cell finding her way. Somewhere, Marcus lived in darkness paying his price. Somewhere, others still hid waiting to be found. But here… on this hill… beneath the star my mother had promised me… I was safe.

I was home.

And as long as I carried her truth in my heart… I would never be alone.
