Chapter 17 - THE CONFESSION

I wrote back to Vanessa. Once.

I did not ask for details. I did not ask for excuses. I simply wrote:

*“I have read her letter. She forgives you. And so do I. Rest in peace, Vanessa.”*

A week later, a reply came. Short. Unlike her.

*“Thank you. Tell my nieces I am sorry. Tell them their mother was the best of us. And tell them never to be like me.”*

That was the last letter.

Six months later, I received a call. Vanessa had died in her cell. Peacefully, in her sleep. No note. No explanation. Just gone.

I told the girls. Carefully. Gently.

Sophie thought for a long time. Then she said:

“Mommy forgave her. So I do too.”

Hazel just nodded. “We’re safe now.”

And so we were.
