Chapter 8 - THE BROTHERS FACE TO FACE

The silence inside the house was deafening. I gripped my weapon, my heart hammering so hard I could hear it in my ears. Beside me, Vanessa stood pale but steady, her own gun raised. James stood near the window, his face set in stone, staring at the brother he had once known.

"James," Julian called again. "Don’t be foolish. You were always the sensible one. You knew when to walk away. Why are you standing in the path of destiny? This is mine. All of it. And you… you chose to stand with strangers instead of your own blood."

James took a slow breath. He turned to me. "Stay here. Guard the hallway. If anything happens… get the girls and run."

"James—"

"I have to speak with him," he said. "If I don’t… he orders them to fire immediately. Give me two minutes. If anything goes wrong… you know what to do."

Before I could argue, James stepped to the door. He unlocked it. He pulled it open. And he walked out onto the porch, hands raised.

I rushed to the window, watching through a crack in the curtains.

Julian smiled when he saw James. A cold, humorless smile.

"There you are," Julian said. "I knew you wouldn’t hide behind an innocent family."

"I’m not hiding," James said. "I’m standing here. And I’m telling you to leave. Walk away, Julian. Before this becomes something neither of us can fix."

Julian laughed. "Walk away? After everything I’ve sacrificed? Everything I’ve built? You abandoned me. You abandoned our family. And now you stand in my way?"

"You’re murdering children," James said, his voice calm but firm. "You’re holding an innocent girl hostage. You’re destroying lives for money that doesn’t even belong to you. That isn’t family. That’s evil."

"Evil?" Julian’s voice hardened. "I am correcting a wrong! Our father was cheated out of everything! Adrian’s father stole our birthright! And I am taking back what is ours!"

"Not like this," James said. "Never like this. And Vanessa isn’t yours to command. She’s leaving. And she’s taking her sister with her."

Julian’s eyes flashed. He glanced toward the door, as if expecting to see her. Then he looked back at James, his expression darkening.

"She’s here," Julian said. "The traitor. She came back to warn you. Didn’t she?"

"She came to her senses," James said. "And so should you. Let the girl go. Turn yourself in. There is still time to make things right."

Julian shook his head slowly. "You never understood, James. You were always too soft. Too kind. Too weak. Mercy is a weakness. And love… love is a trap."

He signaled to his men. Two of them stepped forward, raising their weapons.

"Last chance," Julian said. "Step aside. Or die with them."

James didn’t move. "Then we die."

Julian stared at his brother. For a heartbeat, I saw something flicker in his eyes—sadness. Regret. The last remnant of the brother he had once loved.

Then it was gone. Replaced by cold, hard resolve.

"So be it," Julian said. "Fire."

Before the men could shoot—movement erupted from the treeline. Flashlights blazed to life. Shouts rang out. Uniformed officers poured from the woods, weapons raised.

"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! YOU ARE SURROUNDED!"

Julian spun around. Hale stepped forward from the trees, flanked by two officers, holding a warrant.

"Julian Vance," Hale said. "You are under arrest. For conspiracy to commit murder. For kidnapping. For fraud. And for a long list of other crimes."

Julian stood frozen. His men lowered their weapons, hands raised, surrendering instantly. Julian stood alone, staring at the officers, at Hale, then back at James.

"You called them," Julian said, his voice barely a whisper. "My own brother… you called the police on me."

"I called them to stop you," James said. "Before you destroyed yourself completely."

Julian looked at the guns pointed at him. At the officers closing in. At James standing tall and unafraid. And then—he smiled. A terrible, broken smile.

"You think this is over?" Julian said. "You think a few officers and a warrant end this? This goes deeper than you imagine. Into the police. Into the courts. Into every corner of this city."

He took a step back, glancing toward the dark woods.

"And you, brother… you think you won. But you forgot one thing. I always have a backup plan. I always have a way out."

"Stop him!" Hale shouted.

Julian turned and sprinted toward the treeline.

Officers shouted. Footsteps thundered. James lunged forward. But Julian was fast. He vanished into the shadows just as the first shots rang out—warning shots, meant to disable.

James reached the treeline first. He stood there for a long moment, staring into the darkness. Then he turned back toward us, shaking his head.

"He’s gone."

Hale hurried over, breathless. "We’ll set up a perimeter. We’ll search every inch of these mountains. He can’t get far."

"He will," James said quietly. "He always has a way. And he will be angry now. More dangerous than ever."

Hale turned to the men in custody. "Take them to the vehicles. Check their identities. Secure their weapons." Then he looked up at the house. "Is she inside?"

Vanessa stepped out onto the porch then. She looked toward the treeline where Julian had vanished. Then she walked down the steps and stood before Hale.

"I’m here," she said. "And I’m ready to talk. I’ll give you everything. Names. Dates. Locations. Every crime he ever committed. And I’ll tell you where he’s keeping my sister."

Hale nodded solemnly. "Come with me. We’ll get your statement. And we’ll get the girl."

Vanessa looked back toward the house. Toward me. She hesitated, as if wanting to say something more. Then she turned and walked toward the police vehicles.

I stepped out onto the porch and stood beside James. We watched the officers securing the scene, watching the ambulance arrive, watching the lights flashing red and blue against the dark pines.

"He escaped," I said quietly.

"For now," James said. "But he made a mistake tonight. He showed his face. He threatened us. He gave us the proof we needed. And Vanessa… she is going to dismantle his entire world. Brick by brick."

"And Julian?"

James looked toward the darkness. "He will run. And he will hide. But he will not stop. Not until he is caught."

I looked at James—standing tall, weary but unbroken, the brother who had chosen good over evil. Who had chosen to protect us instead of standing silently by.

"You stood against your own blood," I said. "Tonight."

James nodded slowly. "Blood makes us related. Loyalty makes us family. Julian chose his path. I chose mine. And I would choose mine every single time."

He turned back toward the house. "Go inside, Adrian. Get the girls. Tell them it is safe. Tell them the danger has passed… for tonight. Tomorrow… we begin the work of making sure Julian Vance never hurts anyone again."

I went back inside. Down in the cellar, Olivia and Lily were waiting. When I told them it was safe to come out, Lily ran into my arms. Olivia looked past me, toward the stairs.

"Did you catch him?" she asked quietly.

"Not yet," I said. "But we will. And until we do… we will stay together. And we will stay brave."

Olivia nodded. Then she looked at me with eyes far too wise for her age.

"Dad?"

"Yes, sweetheart."

"Is James going to keep protecting us?"

May you like

I thought of the brother who had stood between us and danger. Who had turned his own brother over to justice. Who had risked everything to keep his promise.

"Yes," I said. "James is going to keep protecting us. Forever."
