Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW IN THE DARKNESS

I stared at those words until they blurred. SHE ISN’T DONE.

Vanessa was in police custody. Handcuffed, locked in a holding cell, awaiting formal charges. She couldn’t have sent this. Which meant… whoever she was working with had sent it. The "we" from her note. The accomplice.

I showed the phone to James. He read the message, and his jaw tightened.

"Someone knows what happened today," he said. "Someone is watching."

"Or someone is threatening us," I said. "If they’re already sending messages… what else are they planning?"

James stood. "I’ll increase security immediately. Double the guards. Patrol the perimeter every hour. No one enters or leaves without being searched. And I’ll have the IT department trace that number."

"Do it," I said. "And James… keep this between us. For now. If the girls hear about threats… they’ll be terrified."

James nodded and left the study. I sat alone in the dim light, staring at the note, staring at the phone, staring at the truth I had been too blind to see.

Vanessa hadn’t just been a jealous, wicked stepmother. She had been part of something larger. A conspiracy. She had married me with a plan. And that plan involved killing my children.

Why? To get my fortune? If both girls were dead, Vanessa—my wife, their stepmother—would inherit everything. Unless… unless there was someone else she intended to share it with.

I picked up the note again. If either girl survives, WE lose. Both must go.

Both must go. Not just Lily. Not just the youngest, the easiest target. Both. Olivia too. My bright, brave, eight-year-old daughter who had saved her sister’s life by hitting record.

A cold realization settled over me. Olivia had ruined their plan. Because she had recorded the truth. Because she had exposed Vanessa. Which meant… Olivia was dangerous to them. Olivia was a threat.

My phone buzzed again. Another message from the same unknown number.

*SHE WILL PAY FOR BETRAYING US. AND SO WILL THE WITNESS.*

My heart stopped.

The witness. Olivia.

They knew. They knew Olivia had recorded the video. They knew she was the reason their plan failed. And now they were coming for her.

I bolted from my chair, out of the study, and sprinted up the stairs.

"Olivia!"

I burst into her room. She was exactly where I had left her—curled in bed, fast asleep, the moonlight falling across her face. Unharmed. Safe.

I stood in the doorway, gasping for breath, clutching the doorframe. She shifted in her sleep but didn’t wake.

I walked to her bedside, pulled the blanket up around her shoulders, and brushed hair gently from her face. She was safe. For now. But someone was threatening her. Someone was watching.

I pulled out my phone and texted back. Who are you? What do you want?

The reply came instantly.

*YOU WILL FIND OUT SOON.*

Then the number went dark. No more replies.

I stood there for a long time, holding my phone, watching my daughter sleep. I couldn’t let anything happen to her. I couldn’t let anything happen to Lily. If there was even a single thread of danger still loose… I had to find it. I had to cut it.

I went downstairs and called the police station. I asked to speak to the detective handling Vanessa’s case. When Detective Hale came on the line, I told him about the note. About the messages. About the accomplice.

There was silence on the other end. Then Hale spoke, his voice low and serious.

"Mr. Whitmore… I need to tell you something. But you have to stay calm."

My grip tightened on the phone. "What happened?"

"Vanessa is gone."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. "Gone? What do you mean gone?"

"She was in holding cell four. Alone. Locked. When the officer checked ten minutes ago, she was there. When he came back five minutes later… the cell was empty. The lock hadn’t been picked. It was opened from the outside. Someone with access. Someone inside."

I felt my blood turn to ice. "She walked out?"

"Exactly. And Mr. Whitmore… she didn’t just walk out. She walked out with full knowledge of the charges against her. She knows about the video. She knows what she’s facing. And now she’s free. And she’s dangerous."

I thought of the messages. *SHE ISN’T DONE.* SHE WILL PAY.

It wasn’t the accomplice. It was Vanessa. She had escaped. She was free. And she was coming back.

"Mr. Whitmore?" Hale said. "Are you still there?"

"She sent me messages," I said numbly. "Threatening my daughters. Threatening Olivia specifically."

Hale’s voice sharpened. "Forward everything to me immediately. And lock your doors. Keep your girls inside. We’re sending a full tactical unit to your estate right now. But until they arrive—stay inside. Do not open the door for anyone. Not police. Not staff. Not anyone. Until you see my face personally."

"Why?" I asked.

"Because someone helped her escape," Hale said gravely. "Someone on the inside. Which means… you can’t trust anyone. Not even law enforcement."

He hung up.

I stood in the hallway, phone in hand, staring at the front doors far below. Vanessa was free. She had help. And she was coming for my children.

I ran to the window and looked out over the dark grounds. The garden. The pond. The treeline at the edge of the property. Everything looked quiet. Still. Empty. But I knew better. Somewhere out there… she was watching. Waiting.

I went to Lily’s room. She was awake, sitting up in bed, clutching her rabbit. When she saw me, she held out her arms.

"Daddy? Why are you running? Is something wrong?"

I sat beside her and held her hands. "Nothing is wrong, sweetheart. But we need to be very brave tonight. And we need to stay together. All of us."

I carried her out of bed and down the hall to Olivia’s room. Olivia woke when I switched on the lamp. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, and saw Lily in my arms.

"Dad? What’s going on?"

I sat between them on the bed. "We have to be careful tonight. Very careful. So we’re all going to stay right here together. With the doors locked. And we’re not going to open up for anyone until Detective Hale arrives. Do you understand?"

Olivia frowned. "Is it… Vanessa?"

I hesitated. Honesty was the only way to keep them alert. "Yes. She’s no longer at the police station. So we have to be extra vigilant. Can you promise me you’ll stay right by my side? No matter what happens?"

Both girls nodded, their eyes wide but brave.

"I promise," Olivia said.

"Me too," Lily whispered.

I kissed them both. "Good. Now… if you hear anything. Any sound at all. Any voice at the door. Anything… you tell me immediately. All right?"

"Yes, Daddy."

I stood and walked to the bedroom door. I turned the lock. Then I dragged the heavy oak dresser across the floor and braced it against the handle. If someone tried to get in… they would have to make noise.

Then I sat on the floor between their beds, and I waited.

Minutes passed. Then an hour. Then two. The house was silent. Outside, the wind began to howl. A storm was rolling in. Thunder rumbled in the distance.

Then—footsteps. Outside the bedroom door. Slow. Deliberate. Coming down the hall.

The girls went still. Lily clutched my arm.

I stood slowly, placing a finger to my lips. I crept to the door and pressed my ear against the wood.

The footsteps stopped directly outside.

Then a voice spoke, soft and familiar, through the wood.

"Adrian? Are you in there? It’s James."

I gripped the door handle but didn’t move the dresser. "James? Is everything all right?"

"I don’t know," he said, his voice tight. "The perimeter lights just went out. All of them. And… Adrian, the front gates are standing wide open. Someone unlocked them from inside."

My blood ran cold. "Where are the guards?"

"Gone," James said. "Every single one of them. Their posts are empty. It’s like they just… vanished."

I looked at the lock. At the dresser. At my two terrified daughters.

"James," I said quietly. "Detective Hale told me not to open the door for anyone. Anyone at all."

There was a pause on the other side. Then James spoke again, his voice lower, stranger.

"That’s wise, Adrian. Very wise. But you see… Detective Hale isn’t coming."

My heart stopped. That voice… it wasn’t James.

"Who is this?" I demanded.

May you like

The voice on the other side changed. Dropped an octave. Became unmistakably, terrifyingly… Vanessa.

"Open the door, Adrian," she said, sweet and deadly. "Or I come in through the balcony. And then… we’ll see who survives."
