Chapter 9 - THE WITNESS AND THE HUNT

The next few days were a blur of activity. Hale moved us to a secure facility deep within the city—an apartment under constant police guard, bulletproof glass, restricted access. Vanessa was placed in protective custody in an adjacent building, guarded twenty-four hours a day. She began giving her statement immediately, pouring out every detail of Julian’s conspiracy, every meeting, every threat, every instruction he had ever given her.
On the third day, police raided a safe house three hours away from where Julian had been holding Vanessa’s fourteen-year-old sister, Maya. They found her safe, unharmed, frightened but relieved. When Vanessa saw her sister again, she broke down completely, holding the girl and weeping for what felt like hours.
James stood in the hallway outside the room, watching through the window, his face unreadable.
"She risked everything," James said quietly. "Everything she believed in. Everything she feared. And she saved her sister. And she helped us. She is braver than I gave her credit for."
"She was trapped," I said. "Just like all of us. And when she finally had a choice… she chose the right thing."
Hale joined us a moment later, holding a thick stack of papers.
"Vanessa’s statement is solid," Hale said. "Corroborated by phone records, bank transfers, and the security footage we pulled from the estate. We have enough to put Julian away for life. For conspiracy, kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud… the list goes on and on. But…"
"But?" James asked.
"But we still don’t have Julian. He vanished into thin air. No credit card use. No phone activity. No withdrawals from any of his known accounts. It’s as if he never existed." Hale looked at us gravely. "And that… that worries me. Julian Vance does not simply disappear. He is planning something. Something big."
"Where would he go?" I asked.
James thought for a moment. "He has contacts. Resources. False identities. Money stashed in offshore accounts. He could be anywhere in the world by now. But… Julian is proud. And he is vengeful. He will not run forever. Not when he believes everything was stolen from him. He will come back. To finish what he started."
We spent the next two weeks in that secure apartment. The girls attended school nearby, escorted by two officers everywhere they went. James stayed with us, sleeping in the hallway outside their bedrooms, never taking a full night’s rest, never letting his guard down. He checked every vehicle, inspected every package, scanned every face in every crowd.
He was a shadow. A guardian. The only man I truly trusted.
One evening, as I was sitting in the living room going through business documents, James walked in holding a sealed envelope.
"This was delivered to the front desk," he said, his voice tight. "Handwritten. No return address. Delivered by courier."
I took it. The handwriting was elegant, precise, unmistakable. I knew it instantly.
"It’s from Julian."
James stiffened. "Open it. Carefully."
I broke the seal. Inside was a single sheet of paper. Four lines. No signature.
*You have taken my wife. You have taken my plan. You have taken my birthright. But you will never take my revenge. I am coming. And when I arrive… everything you love will burn.*
I handed the note to James. He read it slowly, his face hardening.
"He’s close," James said. "Close enough to send this personally. Close enough to know exactly where we are."
"He’s threatening the girls," I said, my voice trembling with rage.
"He’s threatening everything," James corrected. "But threats are all he has right now. He knows we are guarded. He knows Vanessa is protected. He knows we are waiting for him. Which means… he will try something desperate. Something unpredictable."
James paced the room, thinking. Then he stopped and looked at me.
"Adrian… we need to change locations. Tonight. Before midnight. We cannot stay here another hour."
"Hale said this was the safest place in the city," I said.
"Julian found it," James said. "Which means it is compromised. Every exit. Every entrance. Every camera. He knows it all. We move. Now."
I called Hale. He argued, but James insisted. By ten o'clock that night, we were packed and ready to leave. Hale arranged for three unmarked vehicles to take us to a new location—a safe house far across the city, in a quiet residential neighborhood.
We got into the lead vehicle. James sat in the front seat beside the driver. I sat in the back with Olivia and Lily. The girls were quiet, used to the routine now—pack, move, wait.
The convoy pulled away. We drove in silence, lights dim, moving carefully through the dark streets. James watched every vehicle behind us. Checked every turn. Counted every shadow.
Ten minutes from the safe house, James spoke sharply to the driver.
"Slow down. Take the next left. Then the first right."
"That’s not the route," the officer said.
"Do it," James snapped. "Now."
The officer turned. Seconds later—an explosion shattered the night.
A massive fireball erupted directly in the center of the intersection we would have crossed seconds later. Flames roared upward. Debris flew in every direction. The heat hit us even from a distance.
The driver slammed on the brakes. Olivia screamed. Lily buried her face in my coat.
James was out of the vehicle instantly, weapon drawn, scanning the rooftops, the windows, the shadows.
"It was a bomb," James said when he returned to the car, his face pale. "Planted in a vehicle. Timed to detonate exactly when we would have passed through."
May you like
He looked at me, his eyes dark and terrified.
"He knew the route, Adrian. He knew exactly where we were going. Which means… there is a traitor. Inside Hale’s own department."
