Chapter 20 - THE GIRL WHO DARED TO SPEAK

Years have passed since that terrible night. I am older now. Wiser. Stronger.
I still keep the locket close. A reminder of who I am. And where I came from. And what I survived.
Vanessa and Julian remain in prison. They have never reached out again. They are part of my history—but they are not my family.
My family is Adrian, who chose me when he learned I was not his blood, and loved me all the more for it. My family is Claire, who stood beside me when the world fell apart. My family is Elena, who loved me enough to give me everything she had.
I was born of cruelty and secrecy. But I was raised on love and truth. And that is the greatest triumph of all.
People ask me sometimes—do I hate them? Do I wish things had been different?
I answer them this way: I do not hate them. I pity them. They had everything, and they threw it away. They had a chance to be part of my life, and they chose violence instead. They are prisoners of their own choices. But I am free.
And that is the greatest victory of all.

I am Mia Hale. Elena’s daughter. Adrian’s pride. Claire’s joy.
And I am finally, completely, home.
