Chapter 14 - THE DNA TEST

Three days later, the results came back.
My father sat across from me at the kitchen table. Claire stood behind me, her hands resting gently on my shoulders. The envelope lay on the table between us.
My father opened it slowly. He read the paper once. Twice. Then he looked at me.
“It is true,” he said quietly. “Vanessa is your biological mother.”
He reached across the table and took my hand. “And I… I am not your father.”
The words were barely a whisper. I stared at him. At his face. At the way he looked at me—with love, with pride, with everything a father could ever feel.
“Who is my father?” I asked.
My father looked back at the paper. “The test indicates… the biological father is not me. It is Julian.”
I gasped. Claire’s hands tightened on my shoulders.
“Julian…” I whispered. “My father?”
“Which means,” my father said, his voice steady and firm, “that the two people who hurt you most in this world… are your biological parents. And they destroyed Elena to get you back.”
I sat in silence for a very long time. Julian and Vanessa. Lovers. Partners in crime. My parents. They had planned everything. They had used me as a pawn. They had killed the woman who raised me.
And yet… Elena had chosen me. She had loved me. She had written me letters. She had hidden evidence to protect me. She had been my mother in every way that mattered.
And this man—Adrian Hale—had raised me. Protected me. Believed in me. Loved me as his own daughter from the moment I was born until this very day.
I stood up and walked around the table. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed my face against his chest.

“You are my father,” I said. “Biology does not matter. You are the one who stayed. You are the one who loved me. You are my Daddy.”
He held me tightly. “And you are my daughter. Nothing will ever change that. Nothing.”
