Chapter 7 - THE DEEPER TRUTH

I threw my phone onto the passenger seat and drove.

I didn’t know who to trust. Adrian said he was protecting us. But he also knew where I was going before I even told him. Vanessa said she loved Mia but had helped kidnap her. Robert was a stranger in the shadows. And somewhere behind it all stood Adrian’s biological father—a man whose name no one would speak, whose face no one had seen, who had been waiting for his granddaughter since the day she was born.

I drove for hours. Back roads, winding through forests and farmland, doubling back repeatedly. I checked again and again for the dark sedan. It never reappeared. But the feeling of being watched never left.

By late afternoon, I reached the cabin. It sat deep in the mountains, surrounded by tall pines, accessible only by a narrow dirt road. No cell service. No internet. No neighbors within miles. My parents had bought it years ago as a retreat. They’d passed away last year, leaving it to me. It was the safest place I knew.

I carried Mia inside, built a fire in the stone fireplace, and made dinner. She chattered happily about the trees and the squirrels outside, completely unaware of the danger we’d fled. I listened, nodding and smiling, while my mind raced.

After she fell asleep, I sat by the fire and pulled out Vanessa’s note again. I studied every name, every phone number, every address. Most meant nothing to me. But one name appeared repeatedly—**JULIAN VANCE**.

Adrian’s biological father.

I searched my memory. I’d never heard the name. But according to Vanessa’s notes, Julian Vance was wealthy, powerful, and completely untouchable. He’d built his fortune in ways no one dared discuss. He had connections everywhere. Judges, politicians, police officers. If he wanted Mia, there was nowhere on earth we could hide that he couldn’t find us.

Unless…

I looked again at the postscript.

**Mia isn’t just heir to the money. She’s heir to the curse. If she goes with them, she becomes like them. Julian needs her for what she carries in her blood. Not just inheritance—power.**

I shivered. It sounded like madness. Like superstition. But Vanessa had risked everything to write it down. She’d handed me the truth and then vanished.

And then I saw it—a small, hastily drawn diagram in the margin. Three circles connected by lines. Inside each circle, a date.

**1986 — ADRIAN**

**2019 — MIA**

**2042 — ???**

And beneath it, one final line:

**THE LINE MUST CONTINUE.**

I leaned back, staring into the fire. What did it mean? That Mia was part of some twisted bloodline tradition? That she was meant to bear a child who would inherit whatever this family possessed?

If that was true… they wouldn’t simply take her money. They would keep her. Raise her their way. Break her until she obeyed. And then…

I refused to finish the thought.

I stood and walked to the window. Outside, the forest was dark and silent. The moon peeked through the trees. Somewhere out there, Julian Vance had people looking for us. He had resources. Connections. Money.

But he didn’t have one thing.

He didn’t have me.

I’d spent my life believing this was a custody battle. A fight between parents. But it was so much bigger. It was a war between a mother and a monster. Between love and legacy. Between me and whatever darkness ran in Mia’s blood.

I went to the kitchen and found an old notebook. I began writing—everything I knew. Names. Dates. Events. The performance. The microphone. The video. The threats. Vanessa’s visit. Adrian’s warnings. The follow car.

I wrote it all down, clearly, carefully. Then I made three copies. I sealed them in envelopes. I wrote instructions on the outside: IF I AM HARMED OR MIA IS TAKEN, DELIVER TO THE FBI IMMEDIATELY.

I hid one in the cabin. One in my car. One in Mia’s backpack.

If anything happened to me… the truth would come out.

I returned to the living room and sat beside Mia. She slept soundly, her chest rising and falling, her hand curled beneath her cheek. She looked so small. So fragile.

But she was also strong. She’d stood on that stage with tears in her eyes and told the world she wasn’t ashamed. She’d faced Vanessa without flinching. She’d survived everything they’d thrown at her.

She was my daughter. And she was stronger than they knew.

I kissed her forehead gently. “I won’t let them have you,” I whispered into the quiet room. “Whatever they want… whatever they think you are… you’re mine. And I’ll die before I let them change you.”

May you like

The fire crackled and burned low. Outside, wind rustled through the pines. Somewhere far away, men were searching for us. But here, in this small cabin, we were safe. For tonight.

I just had to make sure we stayed that way.
