Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

I ran through the back door and into the trees, clutching Mia tight against my chest. She woke fully, startled, and wrapped her arms around my neck without asking questions.

Behind us, shouts erupted. Then glass shattered. Then—silence.

I stopped beneath the cover of pines, heart hammering so hard I could barely breathe. Should I run? Should I go back? If Adrian was hurt…

“Mommy?” Mia whispered into my shoulder. “Where’s Daddy?”

I swallowed hard. “He’s coming, baby. Stay quiet. Just a little longer.”

I crept forward, keeping low, until I could see the guest house through the brush. Two men in dark clothing stood on the porch. A third stood with Adrian—hands bound behind his back, face bruised, blood trickling from his lip.

My knees nearly gave way. They had him.

A fourth man stepped into view. Older, silver-haired, immaculately dressed. He stood straight and still, looking at Adrian with cold, unblinking eyes. Even from this distance, I felt the weight of him.

Julian Vance.

He spoke something I couldn’t hear. Adrian replied—loud, defiant. Julian struck him across the face. Adrian staggered, but stood tall again.

Julian turned his head slightly and scanned the tree line. His gaze seemed to pass directly over me. I froze, pressing Mia tighter against my chest, terrified even her breathing would give us away.

He said something more to his men. They dragged Adrian toward a black SUV parked beside the house. Julian stood alone for a moment, looking at the empty woods. Then he reached into his coat and pulled out something small.

A photograph.

He held it up, looking at it, then slowly turned it toward the trees—toward me.

My blood turned to ice. It was a picture of Mia. Taken at her school performance.

He knew exactly where I was.

He didn’t shout. He didn’t send his men. He simply nodded once—slow, deliberate—and slipped the photo back into his pocket. Then he turned, climbed into the second vehicle, and the convoy drove away.

They had Adrian. But they hadn’t searched the woods. They hadn’t come for us.

Why?

I waited until the cars were gone, until the dust settled and silence returned. Then I walked slowly back to the guest house, Mia still clinging to me. The front door hung open. Inside, the documents were gone. The flash drive was gone. Every piece of evidence we’d prepared had been taken.

Except one.

Tucked beneath the table leg, hidden by the cloth, lay a single folded sheet of paper. Adrian must have slipped it there moments before they burst in.

I unfolded it with shaking hands. His handwriting rushed and uneven.

**HE DOESN’T WANT MIA FOR THE LEGACY. HE WANTS TO SAVE HER FROM THE TRUTH. THE BLOODLINE CARRIES A DISEASE. A RARE FATAL ILLNESS THAT STRIKES BEFORE ADULTHOOD. EVERY FIRSTBORN IN HIS LINE DIES YOUNG. HE THINKS IF HE CONTROLS HER, HE CAN CURE HER. IF SHE STAYS WITH US, HE CLAIMS SHE DIES.**

The room spun.

I read it again, then again.

A disease. A death sentence. All of it—the kidnapping, the threats, the custody battle—had been built on a terrifying, twisted foundation. Julian wasn’t trying to steal Mia’s life. He believed he was saving it.

Adrian’s final line was written darker, heavier:

**HE ALSO WROTE THAT MIA ISN’T HIS ONLY GRANDCHILD. VANESSA IS MIA’S BIOLOGICAL MOTHER.**

I dropped the paper. It fluttered to the floor, the words burning into my vision.

Vanessa.

Vanessa was Mia’s real mother.

Everything fell into place—the way Vanessa had looked at Mia, the desperation in her eyes, the way she’d tried to ruin the dress so Mia wouldn’t be taken, the note she’d risked everything to give me. She hadn’t been an enemy. She’d been fighting just as hard as I had—for her own daughter.

And she’d never told me. To protect us both.

I sank onto the floor, pulling Mia into my lap, holding her so tight she squirmed. She looked up at me, confused, wiping hair from my face.

“Mommy? Why are you crying?”

I looked at her—her eyes, her smile, the familiar way she tilted her head—and suddenly saw Vanessa there too. The same face. The same blood.

Julian wasn’t just Adrian’s biological father. He was Vanessa’s father as well. They were half-siblings. And they’d been forced together to produce the next heir—a child born of their shared blood, carrying the legacy and the curse.

Mia wasn’t just the granddaughter. She was the product of everything Julian had planned. And he truly believed that only his knowledge, his resources, his control could save her from the fate waiting in her own DNA.

He’d taken Adrian. He’d taken the evidence. But he’d let me go. Because he thought I was part of the problem—because he thought keeping Mia away from him was killing her.

I stood up slowly, every breath deliberate. We had no documents. No witnesses. No Adrian. But we had the truth.

And truth was the one thing Julian Vance couldn’t buy.
