Chapter 6 - THE SILENT PARTNER

We drove back to the mansion together, Elena huddled in the passenger seat, shivering despite the heater. She told me everything. How the man had approached her months ago, discovered she’d been siphoning small amounts from Grace’s accounts, and offered to make her rich if she’d help him accelerate the process. How he’d given her the substance used on Grace. How he’d instructed her to frame Marcus. How Vanessa had been his backup plan, a distraction meant to be caught first while he remained invisible.
"He’s meticulous," Elena said, her voice hollow. "He never uses his real name. He communicates through Arthur almost exclusively. He has people everywhere. I don’t even know what he looks like under that scar and makeup—it could all be fake."
"Grace knew him," I said. "She called him the silent partner. That means they were in business together. Someone she trusted. Someone she knew well enough to let close."
Elena nodded slowly. "That’s what I thought. But I never found out who he really was. He kept himself hidden. Even from me."
When we reached the house, police were already there. Arthur had called. He’d told them I’d obtained evidence illegally, that I was interfering with the investigation, that I was likely planning to flee with Lily.
I stood in the doorway, watching officers approach with warrants, and understood. Arthur had moved first. He had known I would go to Elena. He had known I’d learn the truth. And now he was painting me as the villain.
"Adrian Bennett?" The lead officer stepped forward. "We have a warrant for your arrest. Allegations of evidence tampering, coercion, and suspicion of involvement in the death of Grace Bennett."
I stared at him. "You think I killed my own wife?"
"Mr. Arthur claims you stood to gain the most," the officer said. "And that you’ve been manipulating evidence to frame others."
Behind me, Elena stepped out of the car. She walked straight toward the officers, head held high.
"That’s a lie," she said clearly. "Arthur is lying. I killed Grace. I helped plan it. I took the money. And Arthur… Arthur works for the man behind everything."
The officers paused. They looked at Elena. Then at me.
"Bring them both," the lead officer said. "Separate vehicles."

I looked at Elena one last time as they led her away. She gave me a small, sad nod. Protect Lily, she was saying.
But when I turned back toward the house, Clara stood in the doorway, her face pale. Lily was gone.
