Chapter 19 - JUSTICE AND MERCY

They arrested her that morning. She didn’t run. She didn’t argue. She stood on her porch, hands folded, and watched the officers approach with the same calm she had shown her whole life. Only when she saw me standing by the car did her composure crack.
"You would turn against your own blood?" she asked, her voice cold.
"You spilled Grace’s blood," I said. "And you tried to spill Lily’s. That makes you the stranger. Not me."
They led her away. The evidence was overwhelming. Grace’s recordings. The threats. The men she had hired. The money trails Arthur had helped us uncover before his own sentencing. Everything pointed to her.
The trial was swift. There was no dramatic outburst, no shouting, no denial. She sat in silence while Grace’s voice played for the jury. While her own voice played. While every crime she had orchestrated was laid bare.
The verdict came within hours.
Guilty. Life imprisonment.
She looked at me once, as they led her out. There was no love in her eyes. No regret. Only a cold, burning hatred that would never fade.
"She is mine," she whispered. "Lily is mine by right."
"Lily belongs to herself," I said. "And to anyone who loves her. Not to you."
After the trial ended, I visited Elena one last time. I showed her the recordings. I told her the truth about our mother. She wept—not for the woman who had raised us, but for the illusion of the family we had once loved.
"All this time," Elena whispered. "We thought it was Marcus. We thought it was me… and it was her. All along."
"She played us all," I said. "Every single one."
Elena looked at me, tears streaming down her face. "Can you ever forgive me?"
I thought about it. About everything she had done. About Grace. About the fear and the pain and the months of terror. But I also thought about her choice to speak the truth. About her courage in the end. About how she had tried to protect Lily, even when it cost her everything.
"I can't forget," I said honestly. "Not yet. Maybe not ever. But I believe you're sorry. And that… counts for something."

Elena nodded, accepting the answer. "Take care of her. Take care of Lily. Make sure she knows what real love looks like. Not blood. Not legacy. Just… love."
"I will," I promised.
