Chapter 18 - THE FINAL RECORDING

That night, after Lily was asleep, I sat in the study with Teddy. I pulled out the backup memory card—the one Grace had hidden—and loaded it onto my computer. I had watched the files about Grace’s death. About Marcus. But there was one folder I hadn’t opened.
Labeled simply: FOR WHEN SHE COMES FOR LILY.
My hands shook as I clicked play. Grace appeared on the screen, sitting right here in this study, speaking directly into the camera, her face serious, her voice steady.
"Adrian," she began. "If you’re watching this… then she has finally shown her true face. My mother-in-law. Your mother."
I sat back, stunned. Grace had known. All along.
"She came to me three days before I died," Grace continued. "She offered me money. A great deal of money. To leave Lily in her care. To change the will. To give her control of the estate. When I refused… she threatened me. She told me that what she couldn’t buy, she would take. That she had waited long enough for what was hers."
Grace paused, glancing toward the door, then back at the camera.
"I recorded her. On this file. Everything. The threats. The confession. The names of everyone she has paid. Every crime she has orchestrated. All of it. I hid it here because I knew she would search my home, my office, my phone… but she would never suspect I kept the most important evidence inside a child’s toy bear."
Grace leaned forward, her eyes locking with mine across time and distance.
"She will try to take Lily. She believes Lily is the key to everything. That she can raise her, mold her, and use her to control the fortune forever. But you must not let her. Not ever. Protect our daughter. Expose the truth. And remember… blood may be thicker than water, but love is thicker than blood."
The video switched. And there it was. My mother. Sitting in this very room. Speaking to Grace, unaware she was being recorded. Every threat. Every confession. Every admission of what she had done. Every detail of the plan.
I sat there until the sun came up. Every word had been captured. Every crime admitted. Every name named. Grace had trapped her perfectly. She had known exactly what my mother would do. She had known I would need proof that could never be disputed.

I called Detective Hayes at dawn. I told him to bring a full team. I told him what I had. And for the first time since this nightmare began… I didn’t feel afraid.
I felt ready.
