Chapter 7: The Video My Mother Left Behind
Daniel Brooks didn't sit down immediately.
He stood in the middle of our living room, studying the torn pieces of paper scattered across the carpet.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, I strongly recommend that you refrain from touching anything else.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I don't know who you think you are, but this is my house.""
Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a leather folder.
"Actually, I'm here representing the estate of Elena Carter. And the documents inside this folder concern property that legally belongs to her daughter.""
Vanessa laughed.
"That estate was settled years ago.""
"No. Certain matters were deliberately postponed until Nia reached adulthood.""
He turned toward me.
"Nia, your mother appointed you as the sole beneficiary of her intellectual property, original designs, and unpublished collections. Today, I have brought the documents confirming that arrangement.""
I stared at him.
"Does that mean everything Brianna is presenting tomorrow belongs to me?""
"That depends on the individual designs and their registration status. But the Phoenix Collection is explicitly protected under the trust.""
Brianna suddenly stood.
"That's ridiculous! Mom told me the collection was being transferred legally.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Who authorized you to use those designs?""
Brianna looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa answered immediately.
"Richard approved the agreement.""
Daniel nodded.
"Mr. Carter signed a preliminary document. However, he did not possess the authority to transfer the beneficiary's intellectual property.""
My father looked down.
"So the agreement is invalid?""
"At this stage, it appears to be legally challengeable. We will need to examine the complete transaction.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You cannot simply walk into my home and threaten me.""
Daniel calmly removed another document.
"I'm not threatening anyone. I'm informing you that the estate has requested an immediate preservation order concerning the original designs and related commercial materials.""
He placed the document on the table.
"And any attempt to destroy, conceal, or transfer those materials after receiving notice may create additional legal consequences.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
Brianna grabbed her mother's arm.
"Mom, what does that mean?""
"It means nothing," Vanessa snapped.
But her fingers were trembling.
Daniel turned to me.
"There's something else your mother left.""
He opened a padded envelope.
Inside was a small silver USB drive.
A tiny engraved phoenix was visible on one side.
I recognized it immediately.
My mother had owned a matching pendant.
"What's that?"" I whispered.
"An encrypted video recording. Your mother instructed the estate attorney to release it directly to you when you turned eighteen.""
My father slowly approached.
"Elena made a video?""
Daniel nodded.
"She recorded it approximately three weeks before she passed away.""
My eyes filled.
"Can I watch it?""
"Of course.""
Daniel connected the USB drive to his laptop.
A password screen appeared.
He typed something.
The screen went black.
Then a familiar face appeared.
My mother.
For a moment, the entire room disappeared.
She was sitting in her old sewing studio, wearing a pale blue cardigan. Her hair was tied loosely behind her head, and a measuring tape rested around her neck.
She looked thinner than I remembered.
But her eyes were the same.
Warm.
Bright.
Alive.
"Hello, my beautiful girl.""
My knees weakened.
I covered my mouth.
My mother smiled at the camera.
"If you're watching this, Nia, then you've finally turned eighteen. I wish I could be there to hug you.""
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
She continued.
"I don't know what your life looks like right now. I don't know whether you still love drawing dresses or whether you've discovered a completely different dream. Whatever you've chosen, I hope you've chosen it because it makes you happy.""
She paused.
Then she lifted a piece of turquoise fabric.
"This is the fabric I saved for your first collection.""
I began crying harder.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
"I know you will recognize it.""
My father sat down slowly.
Then my mother said something that made him cover his face.
"Richard, if you're watching this too, please don't make the same mistake twice.""
The room became silent.
My mother continued.
"I know you love our daughter. But love is not simply providing a roof over someone's head. It's listening when they speak. It's protecting their dreams, even when those dreams are different from yours.""
My father began to cry.
Vanessa looked away.
Then my mother leaned closer to the camera.
"There is something I need Nia to understand.""
She took a deep breath.
"Six months before this recording, I discovered that someone had been copying my designs and presenting them as their own.""
I felt my heartbeat quicken.
My mother opened a folder.
Inside were several photographs.
One showed a young Brianna standing beside a sewing machine.
Another showed a sketchbook.
Another showed a document with Vanessa's signature.
My mother continued.
"I initially believed this was an innocent misunderstanding. Brianna was young, and I wanted to encourage her interest in fashion.""
Brianna stepped backward.
"Turn it off.""
Nobody moved.
My mother's voice continued.
"But when I discovered that several of my unpublished designs had been submitted to an outside company, I realized this was more serious.""
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the laptop.
Daniel stepped between her and the table.
"Please don't.""
She stopped.
My mother continued.
"I confronted Vanessa. She told me that she had only wanted to help Brianna build a future.""
A sad smile crossed my mother's face.
"I understood wanting to help your child. I would have done anything for Nia. But I could never understand why someone would need to steal another child's future to give their own child one.""
Brianna's face turned white.
Then my mother lifted another document.
"This is why I created the trust. I wanted Nia's future protected, regardless of what happened to me.""
She looked down briefly.
Then back at the camera.
"There's one more thing.""
She reached beneath the desk and pulled out a small wooden box.
Inside was a silver phoenix pendant.
I gasped.
It was the same pendant I had once seen around her neck.
My mother smiled.
"This pendant contains a small key. The key opens the bottom compartment of my original sewing cabinet.""
I turned toward the sewing room.
My mother continued.
"Inside that compartment are the original pattern books, the first sketches, and the complete design records for the Phoenix Collection.""
Daniel paused the video.
I stared at him.
"The sewing cabinet is still here.""
He nodded.
"Your mother specifically requested that it remain in the family home until you turned eighteen.""
I looked toward the hallway.
The old cabinet was still in the sewing room.
Vanessa had never bothered to throw it away because she considered it worthless.
My mother's voice continued.
"One final thing, sweetheart.""
She smiled.
"Don't let anyone convince you that you must become me. You are not here to finish my life. You are here to build your own.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"And if someone breaks your dream, remember what I always told you.""
I whispered the words before she said them.
"A broken seam doesn't mean a broken dream.""
My mother smiled.
"That's my girl.""
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
I was crying so hard that I could barely stand.
My father covered his face with both hands.
Vanessa sat motionless.
And Brianna?
She was staring at the floor.
Daniel closed the laptop.
"That recording confirms the circumstances surrounding the creation of the trust. We'll preserve it as evidence.""
My father looked at Vanessa.
"How could you?""
She lifted her chin.
"Don't act like you were innocent, Richard. You knew about the collection.""
"I didn't know you were stealing from her.""
"You signed the agreement!""
"Because I trusted you!""
Vanessa laughed.
"Then perhaps you should have paid more attention.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you something. Did you authorize Northstar Fashion Group to manufacture garments using Elena Carter's original designs?""
Vanessa said nothing.
"Did you receive any payment?""
Still nothing.
Daniel placed another document on the table.
"Northstar has confirmed a deposit of $150,000 to Carter Creative Holdings.""
My father stood.
"One hundred and fifty thousand?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"It was an advance.""
"Where is the money?""
She looked away.
Daniel continued.
"The remaining balance was scheduled to be released after tomorrow's presentation.""
I stared at her.
"So that's why you're rushing.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
I stepped forward.
"I know you tried to cancel my graduation. I know you stole my mother's designs. I know you helped Brianna claim my work.""
My voice shook.
"But you still don't understand something.""
She narrowed her eyes.
"What?""
"I'm not going to sign anything.""
Vanessa stood.
"Then you'll regret making this difficult.""
Daniel calmly closed his folder.
"That statement has been noted.""
My father moved toward the sewing room.
"I want to see the cabinet.""
I followed him.
The old wooden cabinet stood beneath the window.
Its surface was covered in scratches, and one brass handle was missing.
I ran my fingers along the edge.
"Mom used to sit here.""
My father nodded.
"She spent almost every evening in this room.""
He looked at the cabinet.
"I should have protected it.""
I didn't answer.
Daniel examined the lower section.
"There appears to be a concealed compartment.""
He pressed gently against the wood.
A small panel shifted.
Inside was a narrow metal lock.
I looked at the pendant in the video still visible on Daniel's laptop.
"Where's the key?""
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
He removed a small sealed envelope.
"Your mother left this with the estate attorney.""
I opened it.
Inside was the silver phoenix pendant.
My hands trembled as I turned it over.
A tiny key was attached to its back.
I inserted it into the lock.
Click.
The compartment opened.
Inside were three leather-bound notebooks, a stack of original sketches, and a sealed white envelope.
My name was written across the front.
*For Nia, when she is ready.*
I reached for it.
But before I could open it, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
"Daniel Brooks speaking.""
A moment later, his expression changed.
"You're certain?""
He listened.
Then looked at me.
"Understood. Please send the documents immediately.""
He ended the call.
"What happened?"" I asked.
Daniel took a slow breath.
"Northstar has just announced that tomorrow's presentation will feature Brianna as the exclusive creative director of the Elena Carter Collection.""
I stared at him.
"Even after they received notice?""
"Apparently, yes.""
He glanced at the original sketches.
"And there's something else.""
"What?""
"Northstar claims they have an independent contract signed by your mother.""
My father frowned.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel looked at the sealed envelope in my hand.
"Perhaps the answer is inside that letter.""
I slowly opened it.
The first sentence made my heart stop.
My dearest Nia, if Vanessa has managed to convince your father to sign away my collection, then she has finally done what I feared most.
But the second sentence was even more shocking.
There is one person who knows the truth about why she wanted these designs so desperately.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
*Brianna Carter.*
May you like
And beneath it, my mother had written:
She was never supposed to be part of this family secret.
