Chapter 9: The Son Hidden In The Shadows
Margaret stared at the birth certificate.
Ethan Hayes.
The name felt unfamiliar.
And yet somehow…
It felt like something she had been waiting her entire life to hear.
Her fingers trembled as she held the paper.
“No.””
The word came out as a whisper.
Then stronger.
“No.””
Ethan watched her carefully.
Not with anger.
Not with hatred.
With the expression of someone who had spent years hoping for a different reaction.
Margaret looked at the phone.
“Thomas.””
A long silence followed.
Then his voice answered.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words broke something inside her.
Not because they were enough.
Because they weren’t.
“You knew.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
“You knew?””
His silence was confirmation.
Margaret closed her eyes.
Seven years of grief.
Seven years of believing she had lost her husband.
And now she discovered that the same man had hidden another child from her.
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Why would you do this?””
Thomas’s voice was quiet.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.””
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked at Ethan.
“And everyone keeps destroying my life while doing it.””
Ethan lowered his eyes.
The anger Margaret expected from him wasn’t there.
Only pain.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
She looked at him.
“You helped Rachel.””
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
The answer was honest.
And somehow that hurt more.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at the documents on the desk.
“Because I needed access.””
Rachel immediately reacted.
“Access to what?””
Ethan ignored her.
Margaret stared.
“Explain.””
Ethan took a slow breath.
“For years, I tried to understand why I was taken away.””
The room became quiet.
“Taken away?””
Ethan nodded.
“I wasn’t told I had a family.””
Margaret felt a sharp pain in her chest.
“I don’t understand.””
“I was raised under a different name.””
Ethan looked at the photograph.
“Someone made sure I never knew about Hayes Global. Never knew about you.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked at the phone.
“Thomas knows.””
Margaret waited.
“Tell me.””
Thomas’s voice came through.
“It was my father.””
Nobody moved.
Margaret stared.
“Your father?””
Thomas continued.
“My father believed the company was his legacy. He thought Margaret changed everything when she took control.””
Daniel frowned.
“Thomas, are you saying your own father was involved?””
“Yes.””
Margaret shook her head.
“That makes no sense.””
Thomas sighed.
“He never accepted that Hayes Global became ours.””
Ethan looked at Margaret.
“He believed I was the rightful heir.””
The words settled heavily.
Margaret understood.
This was never just about money.
It was about ownership.
Control.
A family war hidden beneath the surface.
“Why was Ethan hidden?””
Thomas answered.
“Because my father knew Ethan existed.””
Margaret looked confused.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
The silence was unbearable.
Finally:
“Because Ethan was used against us.””
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“My grandfather told me my parents abandoned me.””
Margaret’s breath caught.
“No.””
“He told me you chose Alexander.””
The room went silent.
Margaret felt tears forming.
“I would never…”
“I know that now.””
Ethan’s voice was calm.
“But I spent most of my life believing you didn’t want me.””
Margaret looked away.
A thousand moments.
A thousand years of wondering why she always felt like something was missing.
The strange emptiness she could never explain.
The feeling that a piece of her life had been taken.
Now she knew why.
Rachel suddenly spoke.
“So what?””
Everyone turned.
She looked frustrated.
“You found your lost son. Congratulations.””
Margaret stared at her.
Rachel continued.
“But none of this changes the company situation.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You still don’t understand.””
Rachel frowned.
“What?””
“You were never taking the company.””
Rachel laughed.
“Really?””
Ethan walked toward the documents.
“You were opening the door.””
Daniel looked at him.
“To what?””
Ethan pointed at the transfer papers.
“The succession clause.””
Margaret looked confused.
“Explain.””
Ethan picked up the documents.
“Rachel needed Margaret’s authorization.””
“Yes.””
“But she didn’t know the authorization would trigger a legal review.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“What?””
Ethan continued.
“The moment Margaret approved the transfer, the system checked all ownership claims.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“And because Thomas’s original emergency authority was activated…”
Ethan nodded.
“The system would search for all rightful heirs.””
Margaret stared.
“And it found you.””
“Yes.””
Rachel stepped back.
“No.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You thought you were stealing the company.””
His voice became colder.
“But you were actually reopening the case that proves who tried to steal it first.””
Rachel’s confidence disappeared.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan reached into his coat.
He removed another file.
“This.””
He placed it on the desk.
Daniel opened it.
Then his expression changed.
Margaret noticed.
“What?””
Daniel looked at her.
“These are financial records.””
“From when?””
“Seven years ago.””
The same year Thomas disappeared.
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“What did you find?””
Ethan’s voice became quiet.
“The money used to arrange my disappearance.””
Silence.
Rachel stared.
“I had nothing to do with that.””
Ethan looked at her.
“I know.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Rachel included.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
Ethan turned toward her.
“You were only hired years later.””
Rachel swallowed.
“Then who hired me?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Margaret looked at the documents.
“Who?””
Ethan’s expression became serious.
“The person who knew exactly how to destroy this family.””
Daniel turned another page.
Then froze.
“Oh no.””
Margaret immediately looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel slowly lifted the document.
“This account…”
“What about it?””
He looked at Rachel.
Then at Margaret.
“The money trail leads to a company controlled by someone in the Hayes family.””
Margaret’s heart sank.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then answered:
“Your brother.””
The room went silent.
Margaret felt the world shift again.
Her brother.
The person who attended every family event.
The person who comforted her after Thomas’s death.
The person who told her:
“Family is all you have left.””
Rachel looked shocked.
“You’re saying he hired me?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He didn’t hire Rachel.””
A pause.
“He hired someone else.””
Margaret stared.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
Ethan already knew.
And the sadness in his eyes was worse than anger.
“Someone who could get close.””
Margaret’s voice became barely audible.
“Who?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
Then said:
“The person who convinced you to trust them.””
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly everyone understood.
Rachel wasn’t the mastermind.
Ethan wasn’t the mastermind.
Even Thomas wasn’t the mastermind.
There was someone else.
Someone who had been watching.
Waiting.
Manipulating every piece on the board.
Daniel’s laptop suddenly received a notification.
A new message.
He opened it.
Then stood completely still.
Margaret saw his face.
“What?””
Daniel turned the screen.
One sentence appeared.
A message from an unknown sender.
*STOP LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH.*
Another message arrived immediately.
*OR YOU’LL LOSE ANOTHER CHILD.*
Margaret’s blood ran cold.
She looked at Alexander’s empty space.
At Ethan.
At the phone.
Then the final message appeared.
A name.
The person who sent it.
The person who had been controlling everything.
Margaret read it.
And whispered:
“No…”
Because the name on the screen belonged to someone she never imagined could betray her.
Someone she had defended her entire life.
May you like
Someone who was supposed to be on her side.
*Thomas Hayes.*
