Chapter 5: The Truth Behind The Disappearance
Margaret stared at the name on the screen.
Thomas Hayes.
For seven years, she had forced herself to accept that name belonged only to the past.
A memory.
A photograph.
A voice she could no longer hear.
But now it appeared in front of her like a ghost refusing to disappear.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Then again.
“No.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“Margaret…”
She raised a hand.
“Don’t.””
Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.
“That’s not possible.””
Rachel stood several feet away, unusually silent.
For once, she wasn’t calculating her next move.
She was watching a woman discover that the foundation of her entire life might have been built on a lie.
“The system can be wrong,” Rachel said.
Margaret looked at her.
“You think I don’t know that?””
Rachel’s expression softened slightly.
“I’m saying there has to be another explanation.””
Margaret turned back to Daniel.
“Find one.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’m trying.””
His fingers moved across the keyboard.
“Thomas’s old credentials were supposed to be permanently disabled after his death.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“His death was confirmed.””
“Yes.””
“By doctors.””
“Yes.””
“By the police.””
“Yes.””
She opened her eyes.
“Then explain how his account was used.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
The clock on the wall continued ticking.
Each second felt heavier than the last.
Rachel walked slowly toward the desk.
“I need to know something.””
Margaret looked at her.
“What?””
“Was Thomas involved in the company after you took full control?””
The question made Margaret uncomfortable.
“No.””
Rachel studied her.
“That’s not true.””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Excuse me?””
Rachel pointed at the screen.
“Your husband created a hidden succession system. He kept emergency access. That means he never completely let go.””
Margaret said nothing.
Because Rachel had touched something she didn’t want to admit.
Thomas had always been like that.
Brilliant.
Protective.
And sometimes controlling.
He loved the company.
But sometimes Margaret wondered if he loved the company more than he loved the people around him.
Especially her.
“He trusted me,” Margaret finally said.
Rachel shook her head.
“Maybe.””
A pause.
“Or maybe he trusted himself more.””
The words hurt.
Because a small part of Margaret had wondered the same thing.
Daniel interrupted.
“I found something.””
Both women turned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“The access isn’t coming from Thomas’s old account.””
Margaret frowned.
“But you said—”
“I said it was authenticated using his identity.””
Daniel pointed at another line.
“But the actual login location is different.””
“Where?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then answered.
“Hayes Global headquarters.””
Rachel’s eyes narrowed.
“So someone inside the company is using his identity.””
“Yes.””
Margaret took a slow breath.
“Can you find the person?””
“I can trace the device.””
Daniel typed.
A progress bar appeared.
Everyone waited.
The seconds moved slowly.
Then suddenly—
The screen changed.
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Margaret immediately noticed.
“What did you find?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He looked up.
“The device location changed.””
Rachel frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because it moved while you were tracking it.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
Margaret felt a cold wave move through her.
“Someone knows.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
Someone wasn’t just using Thomas’s identity.
Someone was watching them.
Rachel looked toward the office door.
The confidence she once had was gone.
“We should leave.””
Margaret looked at her.
“Now you want to leave?””
Rachel ignored the sarcasm.
“I’m serious.””
“So am I.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“You came here trying to steal my company.””
Rachel met her eyes.
“Yes.””
“And now?””
Rachel looked at the laptop.
“Now I think someone else was planning something much bigger.””
Before Margaret could respond, a sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t Margaret’s.
It wasn’t Rachel’s.
It was coming from the old desk drawer.
Margaret slowly turned.
The drawer had been locked for years.
She knew because she had never opened it after Thomas died.
Daniel looked at her.
“What is that?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
She walked toward the desk.
Every step felt heavier.
She reached for the drawer.
Then stopped.
Because she remembered something.
The last night she saw Thomas.
The night before the accident.
They had argued.
Not about the company.
About secrets.
“You don’t trust me anymore,” Thomas had said.
Margaret had been exhausted.
“I trust you. I just don’t understand why you keep making decisions without telling me.””
Thomas looked hurt.
“There are things I’m protecting you from.””
She remembered laughing bitterly.
“Protecting me?””
“Yes.””
“By hiding things?””
Thomas had looked at her for a long time.
Then he said something she never forgot.
“Sometimes the truth hurts more when you learn it too late.””
The next morning, he was gone.
Now, seven years later, a locked drawer in their office was ringing.
Margaret slowly opened it.
Inside was an old phone.
The screen was cracked.
The battery indicator showed one percent.
Impossible.
She picked it up.
The ringing stopped.
Then a notification appeared.
One message.
From an unknown number.
Margaret opened it.
Three words appeared.
Her face changed.
Rachel noticed.
“What does it say?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Margaret?””
Slowly, she turned the phone around.
The message was visible.
*I KNOW YOU FOUND HER.*
Rachel frowned.
“Found who?””
Margaret looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
Another message appeared.
This time immediately.
Everyone watched the screen.
*YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO KNOW I WAS ALIVE.*
The room went silent.
Rachel stepped back.
“Alive?””
Margaret’s hands began shaking.
Daniel looked at her.
“Margaret…”
She stared at the phone.
The impossible was becoming real.
Thomas wasn’t just accessing the company.
Someone was claiming he was alive.
Then the phone rang again.
This time, there was a caller ID.
Margaret looked at the name.
Her heart stopped.
Because the number was saved in the phone.
Saved seven years ago.
Before Thomas disappeared.
Rachel whispered:
“Who is calling?””
Margaret couldn’t answer.
She was staring at the screen.
Because the name displayed was:
*Thomas.*
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
May you like
Until finally…
Margaret pressed accept.
