Chapter 7: The Person Behind The Door
The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Margaret stood frozen, still holding the phone against her ear.
Thomas’s final words echoed in her mind.
*The person standing outside is the reason I disappeared.*
The shadow in the doorway grew larger.
A hand appeared first.
Then a figure stepped into the room.
Margaret’s heart stopped.
Because the person standing there wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone she knew.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who had spent years sitting at her dinner table.
“Mom.””
The word broke the silence.
Margaret stared.
“Alexander.””
Her son stood in the doorway.
His face was pale.
His coat was soaked from the rain.
And for the first time in years, he looked like the little boy she remembered.
Not the businessman.
Not the man whose signature appeared on a betrayal document.
Just her son.
Rachel immediately stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Alexander looked at her.
“That’s interesting.””
His voice was cold.
“Because I was about to say the same thing.””
Margaret looked between them.
Confusion overwhelmed everything else.
“Alexander…”
He looked at her.
And the pain in his eyes was impossible to miss.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt more than anger would have.
Margaret lowered the phone slightly.
“You’re sorry?””
Alexander swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Where have you been?””
He didn’t answer.
“Where have you been, Alexander?””
His eyes moved toward the phone in her hand.
Then toward the laptop.
Then the documents on the desk.
“You found out.””
Margaret felt her chest tighten.
“Found out what?””
Alexander looked at Rachel.
Rachel immediately shook her head.
“Don’t.””
But Alexander ignored her.
“The truth.””
The room became silent.
Margaret stepped closer.
“I need you to explain.””
Alexander looked away.
For a moment, he looked like a man carrying something too heavy.
Then he said:
“I never signed those documents.””
Margaret froze.
Daniel immediately looked up.
“What?””
Alexander walked into the office and closed the door behind him.
“I never signed anything giving Rachel control of Hayes Global.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“You’re lying.””
Alexander looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“But you knew I would say that.””
Margaret looked at the contract.
“The signature.””
“Was copied.””
Daniel moved toward the document.
“I suspected that.””
Rachel turned.
“You suspected?””
Daniel ignored her.
“Alexander, how did you know about this?””
Alexander looked at Margaret.
“Because I was trying to stop it.””
The answer shocked her.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Alexander hesitated.
“Months.””
The word hit her.
Months.
Margaret felt the betrayal differently now.
Not because he was involved.
Because he had known.
And he had stayed silent.
“You knew someone was trying to take my company.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Alexander looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The same words.
Again.
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Mom—”
“No.””
She stepped back.
“You disappeared. You ignored my calls. You let me believe you betrayed me.””
“I had to.””
“Why?””
Alexander looked at Rachel.
“Because I found out she wasn’t working alone.””
Rachel’s face became tense.
“Stop.””
Alexander continued.
“She was being used.””
Rachel laughed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Alexander looked at her.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
Margaret watched them.
The hatred between them was obvious.
This wasn’t a simple business conflict.
There was history.
“What happened?”” Margaret asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Alexander said:
“I found financial records.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What kind of records?””
“Transfers.””
Alexander looked at the documents.
“Money moving through accounts connected to people who wanted control of Hayes Global.””
Margaret frowned.
“Who?””
Alexander hesitated.
Then:
“People connected to my father.””
The room went still.
Margaret stared.
“My father?””
Alexander nodded.
“Before he died, Dad discovered someone inside the company was stealing from him.””
Margaret shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Thomas would have told me.””
Alexander looked at her sadly.
“Would he?””
The question hurt.
Because she already knew the answer.
Thomas had always believed he could solve problems alone.
Even when those problems affected everyone around him.
“What did he find?”” Margaret asked.
Alexander looked at the old phone.
“He found evidence that someone close to the family was planning to take control of the company.””
Margaret looked toward Rachel.
“Rachel?””
Alexander shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone paused.
“Then who?””
Alexander’s expression changed.
“It was someone we never suspected.””
Margaret waited.
“Who?””
Alexander looked at her.
“You.””
The room went silent.
Margaret stared.
“What?””
Alexander immediately shook his head.
“No. Not you.””
He took a breath.
“I mean the person who made Dad believe he couldn’t trust anyone.””
Margaret’s confusion deepened.
“Who?””
Before Alexander could answer, the lights suddenly went out.
The mansion disappeared into darkness.
A second later, the emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Dim.
Unnatural.
Daniel immediately grabbed his laptop.
“The system is down.””
Rachel looked toward the windows.
“We need to leave.””
Margaret ignored her.
“Alexander.””
Her son looked at her.
“Tell me.””
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Dad discovered someone had been using the company as a cover for something else.””
“What?””
“A private network.””
Daniel looked up.
“A hidden operation?””
Alexander nodded.
“Exactly.””
Margaret felt a chill.
“What kind of operation?””
Alexander didn’t answer.
Because the answer was already coming.
The old phone in Margaret’s hand rang again.
Everyone froze.
The caller ID appeared.
Thomas.
Margaret answered immediately.
“Thomas?””
This time, his voice was urgent.
“You need to listen carefully.””
“Where are you?””
“No time.””
Margaret looked at Alexander.
“He’s here.””
Silence.
Thomas didn’t respond.
Then:
“Who?””
Margaret looked confused.
“Alexander.””
A pause.
Then Thomas said something that made her blood turn cold.
“That’s impossible.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“What did he say?””
Margaret looked at him.
Thomas’s voice came through the speaker.
“Margaret…”
His tone changed.
“He cannot be there.””
Nobody moved.
Alexander’s face went pale.
Margaret whispered:
“What do you mean?””
Thomas answered:
“Because Alexander has been with me for the last three days.””
The room froze.
Rachel’s eyes widened.
Daniel slowly looked at the man standing in front of them.
Margaret couldn’t breathe.
She looked at her son.
The same face.
The same voice.
The same person.
But suddenly, everything felt wrong.
Thomas continued:
“Margaret, whoever is standing in that room…”
May you like
A pause.
“…is not our son.””
